Two people are dead and at least six others are injured after a shooting in downtown Orlando, Florida, in the early hours of Friday morning as thousands enjoyed the city's Halloween celebrations, police said. Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith told a news conference early Friday that shots were fired just after 1 a.m. at Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue with more shots fired nearby minutes later. The six people who were wounded were taken taken to Orlando Medical Center for Treatment. Smith told the news conference that Orlando is popular on Halloween, one of the city's busiest nights of the year, with anything between 50,000 to 100,000 people expected to join the crowds. Republican state lawmakers are attacking a small Florida town's "Safe Place Initiative." The program allows owners to mark their shops safe for LGBTQ+ people by displaying rainbow decals. Ron DeSantis of Florida suspended the top state prosecutor in Orlando on Wednesday, accusing her of incompetence and neglect of duty for what he characterized as lenience against violent criminals. Mr. DeSantis suspended Monique H. Worrell, the elected state attorney of Florida’s Ninth Judicial Circuit, which includes Orange and Osceola counties, and cited her handling of three cases. It is the second time in a year that Mr. DeSantis, a Republican running for president, has taken the drastic and exceedingly rare step of removing an elected state attorney. Critics, and even a federal judge, blasted Mr. DeSantis’s ouster of Mr. Warren as politically motivated. But Mr. Warren remains out of office — and Mr. DeSantis mentions his removal in just about every campaign stump speech.

Allies of Demings acknowledge that she faces political headwinds in Florida including Biden's low popularity. Demings also served as one of the Democratic House managers in Trump's first Senate impeachment trial in 2020. Jose Parra, an adviser to the Florida Democratic Party, said that for Demings to win, she would need to boost turnout among voters in south Florida, including Rubio's birthplace Miami, and lure independents in a vote-rich corridor traversing central Florida.

WASHINGTON — Moderate and progressive House Democrats struck a deal Wednesday on a long-awaited policing and public safety package, a breakthrough they hope will unify the party on a key issue weeks before the midterm election. The package includes four bills written by moderate Democrats. Another by Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey would provide grants to local police departments with fewer than 125 sworn officers. A third, by Rep. Katie Porter of California, would provide grants for mental health professionals and other resources. Two other policing bills, written by moderate Reps. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., and Dean Phillips, D-Minn., that had previously been a part of the negotiations were removed from the package announced Wednesday.
