Read previewBefore I shopped at Trader Joe's, I was never loyal to any one grocery store. That's why when I worked near Trader Joe's, I stopped there daily. I also began to notice how long the Aldi produce he bought lasted in our fridge. It didn't feel cramped like Trader Joe's, which made browsing easier. Just like the seasonal items that stoke Trader Joe's fandom, Aldi's Finds are ever-changing and quirky.

Most people taking those medications, called GLP-1s, say they are spending less on eating out at restaurants and ordering takeout, according to a Morgan Stanley survey released on Tuesday. GLP-1s include Novo Nordisk 's blockbuster weight loss injection Wegovy and diabetes counterpart Ozempic, along with Eli Lilly 's popular weight loss treatment Zepbound and diabetes injection Mounjaro. "There is growing evidence that the drugs have a meaningful impact on consumer behavior and spending on groceries and restaurants," Morgan Stanley analysts said in the survey. Those people are "early in their weight loss journey," but are making substantial changes to their diets and spending, according to the firm. Roughly half of people reported cutting consumption of regular sodas, alcohol and salty snacks by 50% or more since starting on weight loss drugs.

Biden Targets a New Economic Villain: Shrinkflation
  + stars: | 2024-02-26 | by ( Jim Tankersley | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
“I’ve had enough of what they call shrinkflation,” Mr. Biden declared. The video lit up social media and delighted a consumer advocate named Edgar Dworsky, who has studied “shrinkflation” trends for more than a decade. He has twice briefed Mr. Biden’s economic aides, first in early 2023 and again a few days before the video aired. The second clearly informed Mr. Biden’s new favorite economic argument — that companies have used a rapid run-up in prices to pad their pockets by keeping those prices high while giving consumers less. The products arrayed in the president’s video, like Oreos and Wheat Thins, were all examples of the shrinkflation that Mr. Dworsky had documented on his Consumer World website.

Biden was sitting beside common snacks like Oreos, Doritos and Goldfish during the 48-second clip, posted to X. Shrinkflation happens when consumer products get smaller in weight, size or quantity while their prices stay the same or even increase. "That's a message that the average consumer will nod their heads and say 'sure, I hate it when that happens,'" former presidential candidate Andrew Yang said. "They're gonna have to keep making this case around the country because the Biden administration is underwater with independents who are going to decide this November's election," Yang, now the co-chair of the Forward Party said. "They're going to be trying anything they can to say, at least, 'we're on your side.'"

New York CNN —Joe Biden doesn’t want corporate greed to eat into your Super Bowl snack spread. “The American public is tired of being played for suckers,” said Biden in the video. He called on companies “to put a stop to this,” but did not mention any actionable steps his administration would be taking. Biden also didn’t address the companies by name, although the video panned over snacks like Doritos, Wheat Thins and Gatorade, which were mentioned in Casey’s report. In the decades that followed, Oreos and freezer waffles (“L’eggo my Eggo!”) were portrayed as so irresistible that people fought over them. A popular stoner movie, “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle,” chronicled two friends’ obsessions with fast-food sliders. Craveability became such a selling point that Kellogg’s went all in and named a chocolate-filled cereal Krave. High-end chefs weren’t immune. Christina Tosi, known for the hyper-sweet desserts at her Milk Bar shops, named one of them Crack Pie.

But food companies' major bets on snacking come as investors fear the looming danger of Big Pharma's blockbuster obesity and diabetes drugs Wegovy and Ozempic. Younger generations snack more often than older consumers, said Kelsey Olsen, food and drink analyst for market research firm Mintel. Millennials and Gen-Z consumers tend to eat smaller meals that are closer together, creating more occasions to grab a snack. At the same time, Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy have taken off, fueled by prescriptions to help patients lose weight. Some patients even report developing aversions to foods with higher sugar and fat content — a category that includes many big snack brands.

The drink, called “Ice Spice Munchkins Drink,” is a collaboration with rapper Ice Spice and perhaps Dunkin’s biggest fan, actor Ben Affleck. Dunkin rolled out its fall-themed menu in mid-August, a few weeks before Starbucks added its pumpkin spice latte to menus. On Tuesday, Wendy’s began selling for a limited time a pumpkin spice-flavored Frosty, a new flavor to its menu, and a pumpkin spice-flavored cold brew coffee drink, which uses the same syrup from the pumpkin spice Frosty. New York CNN —Wendy’s is entering the pumpkin spice wars. For the first time, Wendy’s is adding a pumpkin spice-flavored Frosty to its menus for a limited time beginning September 12. Adding pumpkin spice-flavored drinks seems like a no-brainer for Wendy’s since the flavor keeps growing in popularity, partly because of Starbucks. The chain doesn’t mix up its Frosty flavors as nearly as often as McDonald’s does with its McFlurry lineup. Also for a limited time this year, Wendy’s is adding a pumpkin spice-flavored cold brew coffee drink, which uses the “same delicious syrup from the pumpkin spice Frosty,” it said.

American price elasticity stretched to the limit

WASHINGTON, Aug 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The United States may be over the hump on inflation, but consumers aren’t acting like it. Lingering restraint will stretch the power of price elasticity to its limits. Similarly, PepsiCo’s (PEP.O) 14% increase in North American prices of Mountain Dew, Tropicana orange juice and other beverages cost it 4% in quarterly sales. Strong appetites for Oreos and Wheat Thins lifted Mondelez International’s (MDLZ.O) sales 2% in the United States, Canada and Mexico, even as prices climbed 10%. They have climbed 3.5% from a year earlier, surpassing the 3.2% annual increase in the Consumer Price Index.

Burger King Thailand has released a 100-patty burger that costs nearly $300. In New Zealand, one of summer’s great pleasures is known as real fruit ice cream: a scoop of vanilla blended with fruit in a machine that produces an airy, barely sweet twirl with a buttery texture. In the United States, it’s just beginning to catch on in cities like Boston, Portland, Ore., and Austin, Texas. But along the way, the no-frills treat has undergone a full-bore makeover. At most American shops that sell it, real fruit ice cream can be mixed with graham crackers and Oreos; drizzled with hot fudge, caramel or chamoy; and enjoyed atop a chocolate- and sprinkle-dipped cone. What Is a ‘Beige Flag’?
  + stars: | 2023-06-07 | by ( Callie Holtermann | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To sort through the chaos of modern dating, some taxonomically minded singles apply a color-coded system to potential partners. So what is a beige flag? According to the TikTok users who have latched on to the term in the past month, a beige flag is an odd trait in a romantic prospect that is not quite a deal breaker, but not exactly a plus, either. Dunking Oreos in water instead of milk is a beige flag. As one user put it, a beige flag makes a potential partner or a partner pause and say “Huh?” for a few seconds before carrying on with the relationship.

Food and consumer goods stocks are poised to keep running, Jim Cramer said Friday, at least if no external news drags down the entire market. The resilience of snack and packaged-goods stocks will hold particularly true as debt-ceiling talks flounder, he added. Colgate-Palmolive also rallied following an earnings report that topped revenue expectations. Cramer also saw the same promise in General Mills , which hit a new 52-week high Friday, and Procter & Gamble , which beat earnings and revenue expectations last week. "Even as these consumer-packaged good stocks have run a great deal, I don't think it's too late," Cramer said.
Brenetta Smith used to buy brand-name foods like Oreos and Doritos without thinking twice. But when she noticed that food prices at her local supermarket, Aldi, were soaring, she realized she had to do something different: “I have to change the way I shop,” she said. So Ms. Smith, 40, a stay-at-home parent in Memphis, started stocking up on dry goods like rice and flour, freezing meat that she bought on sale and avoiding packaged foods, which meant no more Oreos and Doritos. “Even when the world returns to normal, you can still maximize your paycheck and your income,” Ms. Smith said. She started posting budget tips on TikTok in December, and she quickly amassed a following.
