As far as the man in the food truck is concerned, the patch of land he occupies in Sheffield, England, is about as humdrum as they come. To him, the spot — in the drab parking lot of a sprawling home improvement superstore, its facade plastered in lurid orange — is not exactly a place where history comes alive. John Wilson, an academic at the University of Sheffield’s management school, looks at the same site and can barely contain his excitement. He does not see a parking lot. He can see the history: the verdant grass, the sweating players, the cheering crowds.

Wildfire smoke turns the air orange for the same reason clear air makes the sky look blue — it has to do with what kind of tiny particles are in the air, how many there are and what wavelength color they block. As it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, the sun’s light hits all of the molecules and particles in the air. Wildfire smoke blocks the shorter wavelengths — like yellow, green and blue — leaving just the red and orange to pass through. The light has more atmosphere to pass through before it gets to our eyes, which amplifies the colors and how thick the smoke looks in the air. The Italian cocktail, Aperol Spritz, appeared multiple times on HBO's "White Lotus" series. According to Campari, the maker of Aperol, the apéritif is gaining market share in the US, in part because of its repeated appearances in "The White Lotus." Aperol Spritz has often been seen as a divisive drink. Aperol sales, which account for 22% of Campari's total portfolio, grew by nearly 50% in the US in 2022. Campari isn't the only business to see a boost from what has been dubbed as "The White Lotus" effect.
