REUTERS/Florence Lo/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 30 (Reuters) - Chipmaker Onsemi (ON.O) forecast fourth-quarter revenue and profit below market expectations on Monday, in a sign that slowing demand for electric vehicles was beginning to hurt orders for its chips from the automotive industry. The company, whose clients include European automaker Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), forecast revenue in the range of $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion, compared to analysts' average estimate of $2.18 billion, according to LSEG data. Onsemi forecast its fourth-quarter adjusted diluted earnings per share in the range of $1.13 to $1.27, below analysts' average estimate of $1.36. Its third-quarter revenue of $2.18 billion inched past expectations of $2.15 billion.

Tesla investor Gary Black attributed the weakness in Tesla shares to chipmaker Onsemi's (ON.O) bleak forecast. "ON sells to automotive players with over 50% share of global EV sales, including 4 of the top 5 China EV makers," he said in a post on social media platform X on Monday. loadingOnsemi CEO Hassane El-Khoury said the company's top European clients were working to clear their inventory and noted that the company sees "increasing risk to automotive demand due to high interest rates." It contracted to 17.9% between July and September from 25.1% a year earlier due the EV maker's rampant price cuts, which also triggered a price war in key markets such as China. Tesla was trading at about 56 times its 12-month forward earnings estimates, compared with 5.6 times for Ford and General Motors' 4.1, according to LSEG data.

July 31 (Reuters) - Chipmaker ON Semiconductor Corp (ON.O) on Monday forecast third-quarter revenue above market estimates, on optimism that strong demand from the automotive sector will offset broader weakness in the semiconductor industry. Automotive chipmaker NXP last week forecast a strong third-quarter revenue and profit, exuding confidence over a steady automotive demand. Onsemi, which makes sensors and supplies chips to companies like Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), expects revenue between $2.10 billion to $2.20 billion in the third quarter. For the second quarter ended June 30, the company's revenue rose to $2.09 billion, ahead of analysts' expectations of $2.02 billion. The revenue was boosted by Onsemi's power solutions group, which provides power management chips, making up about 53% of total quarterly revenue.

LONDON, July 18 (Reuters) - Stellantis (STLAM.MI) said on Tuesday that it has signed contracts worth 10 billion euros ($11.2 billion) through 2030 with semiconductor makers to guarantee the flow of vital chips for electric vehicles and high-performance computing functions. The global auto industry is only now recovering from a pandemic-fueled shortage of semiconductor chips that forced major automakers to shut down production on certain models and scramble to find new sources of chips. "We have hundreds of very different semiconductors in our cars," Maxime Picat, Stellantis' chief purchasing and supply chain officer said in a statement. Stellantis said it is also working with chipmakers Infineon (IFXGn.DE), NXP Semiconductors (NXPI.O), onsemi (ON.O), and Qualcomm (QCOM.O) to further improve its car platforms and technologies. 3 carmaker said that its new supply agreements through 2030 cover silicon carbide chips that extend the range of EVs, computing chips to operate EVs and high-performance computing chips that will provide infotainment and autonomous driving assist functions.

Key beneficiaries Analysts recently flagged cash-rich companies as a beneficiary of higher interest rates. It said that consumer services, software and semiconductor companies are among those likeliest to profit the most from higher interest. "With higher interest rates, companies with robust balance sheets may be able to generate substantial amounts of interest income and surprise to the upside." The higher the free cash flow yield, the better a company's position to meet its debt obligations. A company with a high free cash flow is also able to access cash more quickly in the event of an emergency or opportunity.

The year is nearing its halfway mark, and global stocks have been doing much better than they had in volatile 2022. CNBC Pro screened for stocks that are beating the market nearly halfway into the year — and that analysts love. Only one stock had a 100% buy rating: Japan's Kansai Electric Power Company , a nuclear electric power generation firm. U.S. semiconductor firm Onsemi also made the screen, with analysts giving it 28% potential upside and a nearly 60% buy rating. Italian bank UniCredit had the highest potential upside in the list, at 85%, on top of a decent 88% buy rating.

Big tech isn't dead, according to portfolio manager Trent Masters, who identified his favorite stocks to play artificial intelligence and more. While there were minimal changes to earnings estimates in aggregate, this was better than feared heading in," said Masters, global portfolio manager at Sydney-based Alphinity. Masters said that one "really exciting area" yet to be explored is the creation of verticals that sit on top of large language models like ChatGBT. Large language models, or LLMs, are programmed to understand human language and generate responses based on large sets of data. Microsoft Masters said Microsoft is "the first port of call" for investors who want to delve into AI.
The biggest week of this earnings season showed us that things aren't as bad as many feared. The week ahead of earnings, including several more Club names, should tell us more. The results are always important, but it's the guidance and management commentary we will really hone in on to better understand the path ahead. In Amazon's case, a solid first quarter for its AWS cloud business was overshadowed by management seeing a material slowdown in April. ET: Nonfarm Payrolls Looking back It was the biggest week of this earnings season for the Club as several of our mega-cap holdings and industry bellwethers reported results.
Bosch said it plans to invest $1.5 billion to retool TSI's chip production facilities in Roseville, California to start producing silicon carbide chips by 2026. Bosch said the TSI facility would become the "third pillar" of in-house semiconductor production, along with two sites in Germany. The silicon carbide chips Bosch said it will manufacture at the TSI Roseville site are increasingly in demand by electric vehicle manufacturers. U.S-based Wolfspeed Inc (WOLF.N) is building new plants to make silicon carbide chips in New York State and in Germany. Bosch plans to acquire the buildings, machines and infrastructure of TSI as well as well as its commercial semiconductor business.

Shares in some chipmakers dipped on Thursday after electric vehicle maker Tesla said it plans to greatly reduce the use of silicon carbide transistors in its next-generation vehicle powertrains. Campbell revealed that, "In our next powertrain, the silicon carbide transistors that I mentioned, that are key component[s] but expensive, we figured out a way to use 75% less without compromising the performance or the efficiency of the car." Chips made with silicon carbide transistors are widely used in electric vehicles. They added the possibility that "cheaper [silicon carbide chips] could drive up EV adoption globally so what vendors lose on content could be partially offset by greater EV volumes." New Street does not expect a lower-priced, next generation Tesla vehicle to "ramp in volumes before 2025 or 2026."

Earnings season continues next week, with Club holdings Linde (LIN), Emerson Electric (EMR) and Walt Disney (DIS) all set to report. Similarly, shares of Meta Platforms (META) have surged over 20% since CEO Mark Zuckerberg reassured investors Wednesday evening that 2023 would be the technology giant's "year of efficiency." The bull case is further supported by continued signs inflation is easing, a still-robust job market and the breadth of market-buying activity since the start of the year. Lastly on Wednesday, the Fed's Federal Open Market Committee raised the federal funds rate by 25 basis points, in line with expectations. The PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index is down nearly 37% year to date. Producing electric vehicles, for instance, involves using a lot more semiconductors, Gleeson noted. Another semiconductor firm he likes is U.S.-based Lattice Semiconductor , which is focusing more on the autos industry. Gleeson isn't the only one who's optimistic on the chip sector. Several Wall Street pros are also urging investors to take a longer-term view on the sector , given the importance of the semiconductor chip in several key secular trends.
The shortage of semiconductors during a boom in electric vehicle sales could help raise profits at a handful of chip makers, according to Bank of America. The investment bank said shares of U.S.-listed European chip maker STMicroelectronics and Japan's Renesas Electronics could rise by more than 75% over the next year on that trend. Although global automotive sales are expected to rise by just 3-4% over the next two years, the transition to EV cars means chip sales are set to grow by 7-9% year after year for the next two years, the Wall Street bank said. The company said auto revenues grew 44% in 2021 due to chip sales for in-car connectivity devices. Other chip stocks set to benefit from the trend to EV vehicles include U.S.-based companies Marvell , Microchip , Nvidia and Ambarella , Wolfspeed , and Onsemi , as well as European semiconductor manufacturers NXP and Soitec .
