Esports joins Pan Am Games, but medals won't count

But any medals won will not be added to their country's official total as they were at the recent Asian Games where esports had full medal status and was one of the most popular events drawing huge enthusiastic crowds. Like the Asian Games the Pan Am competition will be closely watched by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as Esports makes a push for a spot on the Olympic programme. While esports is making its Pan Am Games debut, gamers have been part of many other multi-sport competitions, including the Commonwealth and the European Games. One reason esports medals are not being counted at the Pan Am Games is that gamers are not subject to doping controls like every other athlete in Santiago. Authorities in Hangzhou ploughed $627 million into building a new esports venue while the Pan Am Games competition will be staged in a tent in a grassy corner of the Games fan zone.

REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Organisers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics want cricket, flag football, lacrosse, squash, as well as baseball and softball added to their Games programme, according to media reports on Monday. LA28 organisers are expected to make public their recommendations in the next day, according to the Guardian. Flag football, an appealing option for the U.S.-based Games given the overwhelming popularity of the National Football League (NFL), squash and lacrosse would make their Olympic debut, if approved. Cricket, which enjoys enormous global appeal, would return after appearing once before at the 1900 Games, after the tremendous success for women's cricket at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

"It's very special," said one of Taiwan's female breakers, 25-year-old Yang Jia-li, who added that breaking had massively boosted her confidence. Along with esports' debut as a medal event in Hangzhou, organisers hope "breaking" can help lure young viewers turned off by traditional Games sports. A counter-cultural art-form born in the streets of New York City decades ago, breakdancing is judged against broad criteria in competition. "But before the Olympics we've been doing competitions even in our (underground breaking) culture. “I'm getting used to it and I'm getting used to these sport rules.

Montalvo held off one of his fiercest rivals, Canadian Phil Wizard, in the final to take the World Breaking Championship title late last month and become the first American to qualify for breaking at the Olympics. "Breaking is more mental than physical. "It doesn't matter how fast you are or how strong you are, you can have the craziest moves in the world, but that doesn't mean you're the best breaker in the world." I just make sure that I do add a little bit more of the physicality for it." Reporting by Amy Tennery in New York Editing by Toby DavisOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

GB Boxing seeks associate membership of new world body
  + stars: | 2023-06-06 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, June 6 (Reuters) - GB Boxing will seek associate membership of World Boxing, a new rival to the Russian-led International Boxing Association (IBA), as the divided sport fights for its Olympic future, it said on Tuesday. GB Boxing delivers the United Kingdom's publicly-funded World Class Programme but is not a national governing body as England, Wales and Scotland have their own separate ones. Associate membership does not carry voting rights but will allow representatives of GB Boxing to hold offices within World Boxing. "It is vitally important to the future of the sport in the UK and across the globe that boxing remains part of the Olympic programme," said GB Boxing chair Jason Glover in a statement. "GB Boxing has played a significant role in helping to establish World Boxing and the decision to apply for associate membership is a sign of our long-term commitment to the new organisation and a desire on our behalf to play a part in its future development."

Britain confirms boycott of men's world championships
  + stars: | 2023-04-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, April 4 (Reuters) - British boxers will not take part in the men's amateur world championships in Tashkent after the country also boycotted last month's women's event in India amid mounting concern about the sport's Olympic future. The men's tournament starts on April 30 in the Uzbek capital and runs to May 14. GB Boxing had said in February when it announced a boycott of the women's championships that it was reviewing participation in the men's. GB Boxing will send a team to the European Games in Poland, an official qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The U.S. and Irish federations announced in February they would not be participating in either the women's or men's world championships.
