I moved to Los Angeles about five years ago from San Francisco, and I previously lived in New York City and Chicago. LA lacks great parks compared to other cities like San Francisco and New York City. It doesn't feel urban the way cities like NYC or SF do — I don't feel an urban buzz or excitement. I don't feel any sense of communityI don't feel a strong sense of community in LA. Because it's such a driving culture, I don't interact with people as much as I do in other cities I've lived in.

Overall, actively managed mutual funds and exchange-traded funds fell short of passive funds, with 47% of active strategies surviving and beating their index-following peers, according to Morningstar. However, actively managed funds outperformed in the bond category. About 53% of active bond managers survived and beat the passive average in 2023, up from 30% in 2022, the research firm said in a recent report . Intermediate core bond funds largely invest in investment-grade debt, spanning from government issues to corporates. Core bond funds have also held up in recessions, thanks to their diversification across fixed income and duration.

US oil and gas production is having a record year. US oil production reached an all-time high of 13.2 million barrels a day last month and has remained that high since. US natural gas production is also set a record-high this year, and show no indications of slowing. The numbers poke a hole in arguments made by Republicans who claim Biden administration policies have thwarted US energy production. Still, Hare said: "It's clear that the Biden administration is not running a war against fossil fuels, or if it is, it's a very unsuccessful war."

"Netflix missed their numbers, and Wall Street woke up," said Paul Hardart, director of NYU Stern's entertainment, media and technology program. A wide range of companies and employees were impacted, from entertainment giants to independent production companies to Hollywood talent agencies. More consolidation among the legacy media companies and independent production companies is widely expected, which often entails job cuts. Entertainment companies will get back to staffing up, but the jobs will be in stronger growth areas like gaming, streaming, and advertising, more than in filmed entertainment programming. Here are the Hollywood companies, listed alphabetically, that have made layoffs since the summer.

After more than two years of pandemic-related upheaval, businesses in many corners of the economy are seeing their Covid disruptions recede. Supply-chain disruptions have eased.
