Romance Novels That Bring the Heat

Time-travel romances are often a fantasy of knowledge: Someone ventures back into history and dazzles the rubes by understanding germ theory, or else a historical figure is brought forward and gapes at the marvels of present-day technology. They can also be fantasies of power, as Kaliane Bradley’s THE MINISTRY OF TIME (Avid Reader Press, 339 pp., $28.99) makes clear. When the Arctic explorer Cmdr. Graham Gore is hauled into the 21st century along with a handful of other expats, their government handlers — bridges, as they’re called — are granted an extraordinary amount of control. Bridges are not only responsible for explaining modernity, they also share quarters with their expats, monitoring their bodily functions, mental health, internet searches, geographic movements and political adjustments.

It would be simpler for Riley and Clark to stay enemies if it weren’t for Danan’s signature evocation of horniness — blended here with just a soupçon of pain kink, as a treat. The sexiness is more cutting than her previous two books, with a bright acid pop that brings out the richness. For sheer defiance, you can’t beat Maria Vale’s MOLLY MOLLOY AND THE ANGEL OF DEATH (Sungrazer, 273 pp., paperback, $14.99) — a weird, adorable stunner of a romance. Molly is no stranger to Death. He absently pats her on the back when he shows up in her grandmother’s hospital room and she nearly chokes on an atomic chicken wing.

As with Dumas’s original, the central question is: What is a life truly worth? Status and power are easy metrics, but they’re incomplete — how do you redress a lost love, or broken friendships, or shattered kinship? Quynh intends to pay back violence with violence, but Hoà helps her realize that perhaps justice looks more like claiming happiness for herself instead. In A SHOT IN THE DARK (Dell, 320 pp., paperback, $17), Victoria Lee brings us back to the here and now. She works out her homecoming jitters by hooking up with a hot trans dude at a queer club — only to discover in class the next morning that he’s actually her hot trans photography professor, Wyatt Cole.

An emotional reactionary, he was bumping right up against the on-page shenanigans limit for me. But he was her coward.” This line changes nothing except the reader’s perspective — but that perspective is all-important. Bashir might have the money — and the yachts, and the hotels — but the book gives Yusra the right of claiming. Lily Chu’s two most recent books, last year’s THE STAND-IN (Sourcebooks Casablanca, 384 pp. paperback, $14.99) and THE COMEBACK (Sourcebooks Casablanca, 400 pp., paperback, $16.99), also star wealthy heroes, but here, the heroines are the ones who are up to shenanigans.

The Estrada women are no ordinary florists, however: They grow magical blooms used for truth serums, memory removers and dangerous, desirable love potions. Soon Harlow is caught up in the delivery of a bonding bouquet for an older couple, and flirting with the bouquet customer’s attractive, mysterious grandson. It’s hilarious at the start, heartbreaking toward the end, and full of places you want to dive into and never leave. These are simple questions, but they are simple the way a blade is simple, and Cervantes makes their edge palpable. Perfect for flaying open your heart on a summer afternoon, with a glass of something cool to soothe the sting.

A romance novel is a high-wire act: It’s all about balance. If characters are yearning, there must be something keeping them apart. Not only do Nisha and Elias already know each other when the novel begins — they’ve been teammates for years — but they’re also best friends. If they said “I love you,” nobody would find it strange, but nobody would hear the real meaning, either. So I guess I’ll give this dating app a try — want to help me build a profile?”
