“It’s a problem Facebook has known about for many years.”Facebook spokesman Andy Stone said that the company prohibits "content that offers to provide or facilitate human smuggling. He added that Facebook permits content related to seeking asylum and that it had consulted with the United Nations on its content policies around human smuggling. The policies draw on the U.N. definition of human smuggling as “the procurement or facilitation of illegal entry into a state across international borders” that doesn’t necessarily involve coercion or force. Since 2015, researchers and journalists have regularly identified pages dedicated to human smuggling on Facebook. What Jones didn’t realize at the time was that his son had been identified as a target by the Pasco Sheriff’s Office's “intelligence-led” policing program. Bob Croslin / for NBC NewsThe sheriff’s office disputed the idea that its intelligence-led policing was “predictive policing” in the sense characterized by the science fiction movie "Minority Report," where people are arrested by a police department’s "pre-crime" division before they have the chance to carry out illegal deeds. A spokesman said Bobby had interacted with the sheriff’s office three times before they showed up at the family home in September 2015. It called for the immediate termination of “the student data-sharing arrangement for any collaboration, involvement, or participation in school-based predictive policing” operated by the sheriff’s office. National problemSchool districts and law enforcement officials nationwide are struggling with similar problems.

Facebook is grappling with a reputation crisis in the Middle East, with plummeting approval rates and advertising sales in Arab countries, according to leaked documents obtained by NBC News. Between May 8 and May 18, users in Israel reported 494,463 cases of hate speech while Palestinian users reported 58,618 cases. Long historyFree speech and human rights groups have for years accused Facebook of censoring Palestinian voices, including activists and journalists. But pressure on Facebook has intensified this month as reports of such censorship collected by digital rights groups including Access Now and 7amleh have skyrocketed. Previously members of the Palestinian government and civil society groups had met with Facebook employees, Facebook spokesman Stone said.

“In my 2002 shareholder letter, I addressed that question [of innovation] head-on,” said Bezos, who founded the company in 1994. Bezos told shareholders Wednesday that he credits the company’s “startup” work model for its success. As the company has aimed for speed to meet consumer demands, Amazon workers have started to organize to improve their working conditions. Bezos told shareholders that the company has reduced workplace stress injuries by 32 percent between 2019 and 2020 and the company’s $15 minimum wage has led to an overall lift in pay across employers. There, Bezos told the committee he “can’t guarantee” the company has never used third-party seller data to bolster its own brand sales, a practice that would amount to anti-competitive behavior.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., on Tuesday called for social media companies to stop censoring Palestinian political speech on their platforms. The congresswoman cited a report released last week by 7amleh, a nonprofit that focuses on Palestinians’ digital rights, highlighting more than 500 reports of censorship of Palestinian political speech during this month’s conflict between Israel and Hamas. This included the deletion of posts and accounts, restriction of distribution of content and the hiding of hashtags on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok. Tech companies have been closely watched for how they have moderated their platforms during the conflict, much of which has spilled over into social media and messaging apps. The social media companies have also faced criticism from disinformation experts for allowing misinformation about violence between Israelis and Palestinians to flourish and inflame an already tense situation.

Pro-Palestinian activists are running a coordinated campaign to downgrade Facebook’s app review ratings to protest the company’s alleged censorship of Palestinian accounts and posts. The campaign, which is being shared across social media sites, including Twitter and Facebook, calls on people to give Facebook a one-star review in the Apple and Google app stores. Many of the reviews include comments mentioning Facebook’s alleged silencing of Palestinian voices and hashtags such as #FreePalestine or #GazaUnderAttack. “User trust is dropping considerably with the recent escalations between Israel and Palestine,” said one senior software engineer in a post on Facebook’s internal message board. Facebook, Twitter and other social networks have for years been accused of censoring Palestinian voices by deleting pro-Palestinian posts and accounts.

Noe MontesThe report recommends adopting stricter air quality regulations that are up for a vote by the board of the region's air quality monitor on May 7. Recent growthThe expansion of the logistics industry in the Inland Empire seemed like a lifeline after the 2008 global economic crisis. While many warehousing companies are drawn to the Inland Empire, Amazon is one of the most high-profile and fastest growing. New rulesBut Reynoso and many other community members are hopeful that the proposed rules drafted by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the local air quality regulator, could have even more impact than the moratorium. "We as a region suffer from some of the worst air quality in the U.S.," said Wayne Nastri, executive director of the air quality district.

BuzzFeed reported last month that Facebook was building a version of Instagram for children under 13. "We agree that any experience we develop must prioritize their safety and privacy, and we will consult with experts in child development, child safety and mental health, and privacy advocates to inform it," Otway said. Instagram Kids will be ad-free, and it will feature parental controls, Otway said. "My view is that there's really no way to make it completely safe for young kids." At the time, a Facebook spokesperson said the app had been developed with input from families, child safety experts and child development advocates.

BESSEMER, Ala. — Amazon warehouse workers here were voting overwhelmingly against forming a union Thursday after a monthslong campaign in which labor had hoped to make inroads into the sprawling company. The Bessemer warehouse, which opened in March 2020, is Amazon's first fulfillment center in Alabama. Workers started organizing toward a union vote in August, hoping it would help improve their working conditions. I give it 110 percent every day I go in there, regardless how hard it is, how stressful it is," said Darryl Richardson, a worker at the Bessemer warehouse. RWDSU spokesperson Chelsea Connor said the union received over a thousand inquiries about organizing from Amazon workers at other facilities since the organizing effort began.

People in New York City protest in support of Amazon workers in Alabama on March 4. NBC News interviewed more than two dozen Amazon warehouse workers, nine of whom said they had been fired, disciplined or retaliated against for protected activity and three of whom filed NLRB complaints since the pandemic began. In the months before his suspension, Hopkins had been distributing pamphlets about union organizing to co-workers after becoming concerned about the company’s handling of the pandemic. Amazonians United is a network of Amazon workers fighting for better pay and working conditions. Chris Smalls, who worked at a warehouse in Staten Island, New York, organized a walkout on March 30, 2020, to protest the lack of Covid-19 protections for warehouse workers.
