New Delhi CNN —A runaway freight train in northern India traveled nearly 45 miles without a driver on Sunday, reaching speeds of up to 46 miles per hour, before it was brought to a stop, according to railway officials. No one was injured by the runaway train and it was eventually stopped using emergency brakes and by placing stones on the track, preventing a major accident. In April 2018, a runaway train carrying up to 1,000 passengers rolled for several miles before being brought to an emergency stop. None of the estimated 1,000 passengers was injured in the incident and the train reached its final destination two hours behind schedule. Today, it runs about 11,000 trains every day over 67,000 miles of tracks in the world’s most populous nation.

The investment will be made by the group's Indian unit, RiR Power Electronics, and the company has committed to start operations in the next 18 to 24 months, the chief minister's office said in a statement. Silicon carbide is a component that goes into chips used in electric cars and other industrial power and energy applications. CNN —Indian authorities have arrested three railway officials as part of an investigation into one of the deadliest train crashes in the country’s history. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said in a statement that they had arrested three Department of Railways officials on Friday. The move follows the deaths of at least 275 people in a three-way crash involving two passenger trains and a freight train in eastern Odisha state on June 2. The railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has previously said the accident had occurred “due to a change in electronic interlocking” and that an investigation would show “who was responsible” for that. According to senior railway officials, the crash took place when the Coromandel Express, a high-speed train traveling from Kolkata to Chennai, was diverted onto a loop line and slammed into a heavy goods train idled at Bahanaga Bazar railway station.

A hotel in India’s Odisha state where police are investigating the sudden deaths of a Russian politician, who reportedly criticized the Ukraine war, and his companion. MOSCOW—A Russian politician and businessman died after falling from the roof of a hotel in India on Christmas Eve, police said, two days after a companion succumbed to a heart attack and months after he was in the media spotlight for a quickly retracted WhatsApp post deemed critical of Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine. Authorities in the eastern Indian state of Odisha said they were investigating the deaths of the two men, Pavel Antov, a 65-year-old regional lawmaker from western Russia who owned a sausage-making company, and Vladimir Bydanov, 61, with whom he had been sharing a room.
