These are now the new realities on all of Germany’s land borders. On September 16, Berlin ordered the “temporary reintroduction of border control” at Germany’s borders with Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, France and Denmark. The calls for more checks on Germany’s borders also mark a step-change at the heart of the European Union from Merkel’s policies. In 2015, the long-serving, and ever popular former German chancellor Merkel opened Germany’s borders to migrants fleeing their homes - at the time largely Syrians because of the country’s civil war. The moves by Merkel became known as Wilkommenskulturand and set Germany apart on the world stage in liberal migration policy.

In a twist - which critics said highlighted the diminished state of Turkey's legal system - the top appeals court said the Constituional Court's ruling was unconstitutional. "The Constitutional Court cannot and should not underestimate the step taken by the Court of Cassation on this matter," he said. They were headed to the appeals court and video showed they were briefly delayed by police. "The Court of Cassation's backlash (...) is an open and combative attack against the Constitutional Court," said Bertil Oder, professor of constitutional law at Koc University.

REUTERS/Kuba Stezycki/File PhotoAug 10 (Reuters) - Europe faces growing pushback against policies to address climate change and protect the environment, causing its green agenda to start to fray as severe heatwaves and wildfires rage. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak last month warned of climate policies that "unnecessarily give people more hassle and more costs", days after his ailing Conservatives unexpectedly clinched a local election after opposing charges for the most polluting vehicles. Riding a wave of protests against the government's environmental policies, it unexpectedly beat the conservative VVD party in regional elections in March. POLANDPoland's government, long conservative on environmental policies at home and facing elections in October, has gone a step further by suing Brussels. The row has helped propel the far-right Alternative for Germany to second place in the polls.

People and businesses across Europe are increasing their use of such smart thermometers to keep an eye on how much gas they are using. In the winter of 2021-22, the proportion of homes with heating switched on across Europe passed 90% on November 28. The European Union imports 80% of its gas and gas represents 22% of Europe's energy consumption and meets 32% of households' energy needs, according to the EU. "Some 79% of energy consumption in a private home is heating and hot water," said Tado's Managing Director Christian Deilmann. It is still too early to tell from Tado's data whether households' energy discipline is slackening.
The company receives crude oil from Russia via the 'Friendship' pipeline. REUTERS/Hannibal HanschkeBRUSSELS, Nov 23 (Reuters) - The Group of Seven nations (G7) is looking at a price cap on Russian sea-borne oil in the range of $65-70 per barrel, a European Union diplomat said on Wednesday. "The G7 apparently is looking at a $65-70 per barrel bandwidth," the diplomat said. The idea of the price cap is to prohibit shipping, insurance and re-insurance companies from handling cargos of Russian crude unless it is sold for no more than the maximum price set by the G7 and its allies. Because the world's key shipping and insurance firms dealing with trade in crude oil are based in G7 countries, such a price cap would make it very difficult for Moscow to sell its oil for a higher price.
Industrial facilities of the PCK oil refinery are pictured in Schwedt/Oder, Germany, May 9, 2022. REUTERS/Hannibal HanschkeWARSAW/BERLIN, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Poland will only help supply oil to Germany's PCK Schwedt refinery if Russia's Rosneft (ROSN.MM) is completely removed as a shareholder, Poland's climate ministry said, raising pressure on Germany to completely nationalise the refiner. Germany took control of the Schwedt refinery, which was majority owned by Rosneft Deutschland, last Friday as Berlin strives to shore up energy supplies. It put Rosneft Deutschland under a trusteeship of the German industry regulator but Rosneft still holds 54% of the company's shares. The Schwedt refinery previously received most of its crude from Russia and Berlin is now looking to other countries to supply Schwedt.
