Rent costs across U.S. continue to fluctuate, but there are some major areas where prices are trending up year-over-year. California is the only state with two metro areas in the top five. The rise in rent for one-bedroom apartments in California's Stockton metro area was similar, going from $1,161 in 2023 to $1,175 in 2024 — a 1.2% increase. Amgen on Thursday said it will stop developing its experimental weight loss pill and instead move forward with its injectable drug and other products in development for obesity. Amgen is developing an injectable obesity treatment called MariTide, which is an ongoing mid-stage trial in obese or overweight adults without diabetes. The drugmaker's oral drug, called AMG-786, is the second weight loss pill to be discontinued over the last year. Investors are laser-focused on Amgen's pipeline of experimental weight loss treatments. Amgen's injectable treatment also appears to help patients keep weight off after they stop taking it based on some clinical trial data.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele first competed at cards on the long flight to Australia for the Presidents Cup. Cantlay was solid as ever Saturday in the Genesis Invitational until a soft bogey toward the end of the round that effectively cut his lead in half. The final group is Cantlay and Schauffele, a pair of Californians who are now neighbors in Florida. The American Federation of Musicians (AFM), a union representing musicians across the entertainment industry, will begin negotiations Monday on a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The union said it is seeking a deal to better reflects the current state of streaming media. The AFM is also seeking AI protection, increased wages, health care improvements, improved working conditions and residual payments for streaming content. According to the AFM, musicians who record on soundtracks make 75% less on streaming content due to less residual income. And the AFM is not the only union in the entertainment industry which might strike in 2024.

Jack Burke Jr., who was the oldest living Masters champion and staged the greatest comeback ever at Augusta National for one of his two majors, died Friday in Houston. Burke, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, also won the PGA Championship and was equally skilled as a teacher. He built the fabled Champions Golf Club in Houston and delivered lessons along with a dose of homespun wisdom. His passing was confirmed by Steve Timms, the CEO and president of the Houston Golf Association who spoke with Burke's wife, Robin. Burke was part of the original PGA Hall of Fame in Pinehurst and was among PGA champions not ushered into the new World Golf Hall of Fame when it opened in 1998 in Florida.

Redwood City, Calif.-based Equinix, a real-estate investment trust that runs 251 data centers worldwide, is taking advantage of differences in interest rates between countries by issuing debt where rates are lower than in the U.S. Last year, the company sold bonds for the first time in Switzerland and returned to Japan to raise debt. And it remains on the hunt for other low-yield jurisdictions, even as the Federal Reserve pencils in rate cuts for later this year, says Chief Financial Officer Keith Taylor .

Adobe predicts that full holiday season online spending from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 will hit $221.8 billion, which would be a nearly 5% year-over-year jump. If the estimate ends up being correct, that means shoppers still have a little more than half of their online holiday spending to go. The NRF said this week that its survey found about half of consumers' online and in-store holiday shopping remains. "People are just about tapped out, but [with] the holiday season, people are willing to even further extend themselves," he said.
