In June 2017 — as he was reeling from the end of his marriage of more than two decades and some of the most disastrous investments of his career — Bill Ackman, the billionaire hedge-fund financier, joined Twitter. He offered his early Twitter followers little of the drama that was part of his investing style and would later become a hallmark of his round-the-clock social media posts. Just a few months later, Mr. Ackman went on his first date with a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, Neri Oxman. He was instantly smitten, and asked her on that date if she was open to having children, he told the crowd last year at an awards dinner. They married the following year.

Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman and his wife Neri Oxman are buying a nearly 5% stake in the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, the exchange reported in a press release Wednesday. The announcement came as the Israeli bourse announced the pricing of a secondary offering of 17,156,677 shares priced at 20.60 shekels ($5.50) per share. "The transaction drew robust interest from investors across Israel, the United States, Europe, and Australia, reflecting a strong vote of confidence in both the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange and the Israeli economy at large," the statement read. "Among the prominent buyers were Neri Oxman and Bill Ackman who have agreed to purchase approximately a 4.9% equity stake in the TASE." His wife, Neri Oxman, is an American-Israeli designer and professor.

London CNN —Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman and his wife Neri Oxman are buying a stake in Tel Aviv’s stock market in what the exchange said Wednesday was a “strong vote of confidence” in Israel’s economy. The couple have agreed to buy a stake of nearly 5% in the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE), joining other buyers of around 17 million shares in total, the exchange said in a statement. But his latest investment suggests he is optimistic about the prospects for Israeli companies despite the country’s ongoing war against Hamas. The value of stocks listed on the exchange has swung wildly since October 7, the day Hamas launched its deadly attack on Israel. A report by Business Insider in early January alleged that Oxman had plagiarized parts of her doctoral dissertation.

Opinion | We Need a New Word for ‘Plagiarism’
  + stars: | 2024-01-23 | by ( John Mcwhorter | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
They are boilerplate statements in books or academic papers whose reuse is only uncovered through the use of high-tech language searches. I, for one, would be quite OK with someone else lifting boilerplate statements from my work. In an alternative universe in which we had two words for “plagiarism,” that entire discussion could have been clearer and more efficient. There is no reason the new term has to be a formal one derived from Latin like “plagiarism” — or “duplicative language” for that matter. Perhaps we already have the term: “cutting and pasting” — as distinct from, rather than a form of, plagiarism.

In a note Sunday morning, Barbara Peng, chief executive of Business Insider, said the outlet had spent several days reviewing its reporting after public complaints made by Ackman. “Business Insider supports and empowers our journalists to share newsworthy, factual stories with our readers, and we do so with editorial independence,” Peng wrote. “We stand by our newsroom and our reporting, which will continue onward.”In the wake of the reporting, Oxman acknowledged she had failed to properly cite some of her work. A spokesperson for Axel Springer told CNN on Sunday that the German publishing powerhouse was satisfied with the review Business Insider had completed. “We stand by Business Insider and its newsroom,” the spokesperson said.

“We stand by Business Insider and its newsroom,” said a spokesman for Axel Springer, the German media company that owns the publication. With its stories, Business Insider raised both the idea of hypocrisy and the possibility that academic dishonesty is widespread, even among the nation's most prominent scholars. The business leader reached out in protest to board members at both Business Insider and Axel Springer. “Business Insider supports and empowers our journalists to share newsworthy, factual stories with our readers, and we do so with editorial independence,” Peng wrote. Business Insider would not say who conducted the review of its work.

We are a journalism organization with high standards and a commitment to truth and fairness. Regarding the recent reporting on Neri Oxman, we feel it's important to share the following:There was no unfair bias or personal, political, and/or religious motivation in the pursuit of the stories. The stories were newsworthy and Neri Oxman, who has a public profile as a prominent intellectual and has been a subject of and participant in media coverage, is a fair subject. The process we went through to report, edit, and review the stories was sound, as was the timing. Marc Tessier-Lavigne, president of Stanford, resigned in August after an investigation found serious flaws in studies he had supervised going back decades. Claudine Gay, president of Harvard, resigned as the new year dawned, under mounting accusations of plagiarism going back to her graduate student days. Then Neri Oxman, a former star professor at M.I.T., was accused of plagiarizing from Wikipedia, among other sources, in her dissertation. The attacks on the integrity of higher education have come fast and furious over the last few years. The affirmative action lawsuit against Harvard exposed how Asian American students must perform at a higher standard to win entry.

"Part of what makes her human is that she makes mistakes, owns them, and apologizes when appropriate," he wrote in a post on X following Business Insider's report on Oxman's plagiarism. That's a starkly different approach from the one he took toward Gay after she stepped down as president earlier this week. At the time, Ackman said she should be fired from Harvard's faculty entirely because of what he called "serious plagiarism issues." However, the instances of Oxman's and Gay's plagiarism have more similarities than differences, according to experts and an internal analysis. "It indicates a bad process to drafting this stuff, and I would say that's true for both Gay and Oxman," he said.

On a sunny afternoon in a cluttered music room at East High in Denver, two sophomores practiced violin while their music teacher, Keith Oxman, labored over a desk in an adjoining office. East High is Denver’s largest high school and among the oldest, and there is no modern ventilation system. As the pandemic broke out, Mr. Oxman, 65 and a cancer survivor, feared getting sick or carrying the virus to his 101-year-old father. So he left the school when it first closed, in March 2020, and did not return for more than a year, staying home during later virus surges. “But the windows don’t open.”Poorly ventilated spaces offer ideal transmission conditions for the coronavirus, and at the height of the pandemic, schools like East High were a searing point of controversy.

Feb 26 (Reuters) - Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has pledged $3.25 million to help buy more than a dozen ambulances for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia's invasion, according to a fellow investor who cited a conversation with him. "I had breakfast with my college buddy Bill Ackman this morning, walked him through the attached slide deck I put together about my ambulances-for-Ukraine mission, and on the spot he agreed to donate $3.25 million," Tilson wrote in the email, dated Feb. 25. Ackman's hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management oversees roughly $16 billion in assets. Tilson has been leading an effort to buy ambulances for Ukraine that will be operated by humanitarian aid group MOAS (Migrant Offshore Aid Station), which is based in Malta. Ackman, whose great-grandfather emigrated to the United States from Ukraine, has an estimated net worth of $3.5 billion, according to Forbes.
