Data analytics and decision-makingIn the digital economy, data is gold. Those organizations that leverage data and data analytics well can improve the customer experience and move out in front of competitors. With advancements in data analytics, companies can take advantage of real-time data processing, predictive analytics, and AI-powered analytics to make informed decisions quickly, Gilchrist said. AI, as neededYes, companies should continue to invest in AI solutions, but in many cases with a more discerning approach. "AI investments should focus on areas where automation, predictive analytics, or AI-driven insights can solve specific business problems or create new revenue streams."

So it is noteworthy that Democratic and Republican leaders both appear to want to establish a sovereign wealth fund to help the United States pay for stuff. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which manages about $925 billion in assets, reported a $36.8 billion profit for 2023, according to Reuters. This isn't the first time Washington has toyed with the idea of a sovereign wealth fund. Last March, a group of bipartisan lawmakers led by Sen. Angus King and Sen. Bill Cassidy began discussing a sovereign wealth fund to pay for Social Security. The White House's interest in a sovereign wealth fund stems partly from its desire to compete with China, which has multiple state-owned funds itself.

The S & P 500 is higher by 14% already this year, having topped 5,400 for the first time, already blowing past the year-end forecasts of many strategists. In its revised forecast, Goldman Sachs anticipates the S & P 500 still has further to climb. It would mean a 13% fall for the S & P 500, back down to 4,700. Megacap exceptionalism If AI stocks continue to outperform, defying expectations, stocks could see a huge megacap tech rally between now and year's end. In this scenario, investors can expect the S & P 500 to close out the year at 6,300, a gain of about 16%.

This year, Social Security beneficiaries saw a 3.2% increase to their benefits. The Social Security cost-of-living adjustment may also be 3.2% in 2025 based on the latest government inflation data, estimates Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security and Medicare policy analyst. That estimate may change between now and October, when the Social Security Administration announces next year's cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA. The average Social Security COLA has been 2.6% over the past 20 years, according to The Senior Citizens League. Many households tend to cut back on savings and increase withdrawals to try to lift themselves to where they were before inflation picked up.

The protests roiling college campuses are filled with all sorts of demands, but many of them have one thing in common: money. Many pro-Palestinian protesters want their school’s endowments to pull money from investments in companies that have financial ties to Israel. We all want to live our values and have our colleges, employers and communities do so, too. We saw similar protests in the 1970s and ’80s with South Africa and in the continuing debate over climate change. Students, especially, can learn a lot about investing, governance and complexity through trying to influence their schools.

Students who oppose the war in Gaza began dismantling their protest camp at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland on Wednesday evening, after the institution agreed to divest from three Israeli companies listed by the United Nations for their links to settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. Trinity said that it would move to divest as soon as next month, and that its endowment fund would also seek to divest from investments in other Israeli companies in the future. “We fully understand the driving force behind the encampment on our campus, and we are in solidarity with the students in our horror of what is happening in Gaza,” the college said in a statement released on Wednesday evening. “We abhor and condemn all violence and war, including the atrocities of October 7th, the taking of hostages and the continuing ferocious and disproportionate onslaught in Gaza,” it added. “The humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the dehumanisation of its people is obscene.”

Personal finance education itself is catching on, but is still pretty sparse in American schools. Just 25 states guarantee a standalone personal finance course for students before graduation, according to Next Gen Personal Finance . And there are a number of reasons taxes may not be a part of the curriculum in those programs. "Because people don't have the background in tax law, some people don't know what ordinary income is," Donnellan says. Common credits include the Child Tax Credit for parents and guardians of qualifying dependents and the Earned Income Tax Credit for low to moderate-income earners.

Investing without owningLike real-estate investment trusts (REITs), real-estate funds provide exposure to the tangible asset class without owning and managing property. Investing directly through a private real-estate fund would take a few extra steps. The process requires an investor to identify a real-estate fund of interest. Once that's completed, funds from the retirement account are directly transferred into the real-estate fund. It's also important to read the terms of each fund; some may have added costs for repairs, expenses, and maintenance, which your IRA funds would cover.

If you get a tax bill you can't afford, you can apply for a payment plan to pay it back over time. That's the day your tax return and payment for any tax owed is due to the IRS and most local tax agencies. That's because filing your tax return can come with some surprises — the least pleasant of which is a tax bill you weren't expecting. Prepare for next yearThe best way to avoid a surprise tax bill is to pay what you expect to owe in taxes year-round. By Andrew MacAskill and Sachin RavikumarLONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak paid 508,000 pounds ($641,000) in tax in the last financial year after income from his investments dwarfed his official salary, a report by his accountants showed on Friday. The three-page published summary is the second time that Sunak has published details of his tax affairs since he became prime minister in 2022. The figures show that Sunak made 139,000 pounds from his salary as a member of parliament, finance minister and prime minister between April 2022 and March 2023, and 2.1 million pounds from investments. Of his income from investments, 1.8 million pounds came from capital gains, up from 1.6 million pounds a year earlier. About 70% of the total tax paid by Sunak was due to capital gains tax on the profit made from sales of investments such as stocks.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson told Business Insider at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that two things consistently attract Americans to move to the state. "The housing market in Dallas is very affordable to Californians and New Yorkers," Johnson said. BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vigils for three college students of Palestinian descent who were shot in Vermont over the weekend prompted calls for authorities to recognize the violence as a hate crime, and for unity among the Jewish and Arab communities. One vigil was held Monday night at Brown University in Rhode Island, where one of the victims, Hisham Awartani, is a student. Eaton moved to Burlington over the summer from Syracuse, New York, and legally purchased the gun used in the shooting, Murad told reporters. Eaton came to the door holding his hands, palms up, and told the officers he’d been waiting for them. Sarah George, state’s attorney, said that law enforcement officials do not yet have evidence to support a hate crime charge, which under Vermont law must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
