CNN —The Israeli military has released a Hamas propaganda video it said it recovered showing a child who was held hostage by Hamas, spokesperson Daniel Hagari said on Sunday. Hagari did not say when or where Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recovered the video, which shows the since-freed child, Ela Elyakim, speaking to the camera asking to be released. The IDF released an image showing sisters Ela and Dafna Elyakim, who were previously held hostage by Hamas, in front of a flag with the Hamas logo. IDFAround 250 people were taken hostage during Hamas’ surprise October 7 attack on southern Israel, in which 1,200 people were killed, according to Israeli officials. Gantz demanded that the cabinet adopt a plan to secure the return of Israeli hostages, the demobilization of Hamas and the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip by June 8.

There is no franchise in Hollywood filmmaking that is as consistently good, and as consistently interesting, as “Planet of the Apes.”I feel very strongly about this, and not because I am an admitted enthusiast of genre filmmaking. Like any long-running series, “Planet of the Apes” — which spans 10 films and more than 50 years — has its lows. If you somehow are not familiar with the premise of “Planet of the Apes,” it is surprisingly straightforward. The first five films, beginning with 1968’s “Planet of the Apes” and concluding with 1973’s “Battle for the Planet of the Apes,” tell the story of the fall and rise (and fall again, perhaps) of ape society. When the apes finally arrive — as predators hunting a roving band of humans — it is in a kinetic sequence of genuine intensity.

The hostages were identified as Shani Louk, Amit Bouskila, and Itshak Gelernter, IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a press conference in Tel Aviv. All three were killed while escaping the Nova music festival and their bodies taken into Gaza, he said. “They were celebrating life in the Nova music festival and they were murdered by Hamas,” he said. CNN —The tragic arc of Amy Winehouse’s brief life and nova-like career creates built-in problems for a biography of the singer, which doesn’t dampen the knockout performance by Marisa Abela in “Back to Black,” capturing the talent, rage and self-destructiveness that defined her. Thin as biopics go, the power of Abela’s portrayal elevates the film, providing a poignance and strength that’s the clearest motivation to go, go, go. Then again, as constructed here, the two went hand in hand, with the lyrics to songs like “Back to Black” and “Rehab” directly addressing her addictions to her relationship with Blake and alcohol. In terms of capturing what animated Winehouse, the blinding star power that Abela emits here ultimately justifies the exercise. “Back to Black” premieres May 17 in US theaters.

(For example, federal student loan borrowers can pause their payments if they become unemployed, return to school or get cancer.) But advocates have fresh warnings now as the Biden administration reforms the federal student loan system. Millions more federal student loan borrowers could receive debt forgiveness in the coming months if Biden's revised relief package survives legal challenges this time. PSLF allows certain not-for-profit and government employees to have their federal student loans cleared after 10 years of on-time payments. (The rates on federal student loans for the 2024-2025 academic year will range from roughly 6.5% to 9%.)

U.S. crude oil inventories fell 3.104 million barrels in the week ended May 10, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday. Gasoline inventories fell by 1.269 million barrels and distillates rose by 673,000 barrels. "Expectations of another drawdown in U.S. oil inventories should support oil prices," ANZ Research said in a note. Oil prices also found support from a softer U.S. dollar and stimulus measures from China, said independent market analyst Tina Teng, with a weaker greenback making dollar-denominated oil cheaper for investors holding other currencies. "The U.S. CPI and China's economic data are key to driving oil prices for the rest of the week," she added.

The U.S. Department of Education is giving borrowers more time to meet a key student loan forgiveness deadline. "The Department is working swiftly to ensure borrowers get credit for every month they've rightfully earned toward forgiveness," U.S. Borrowers pursuing the popular Public Service Loan Forgiveness program can also receive additional credit from the payment count adjustment, as long as they certify their qualifying employment for those months. The payment count adjustment is an attempt to rectify longstanding issues for student loan borrowers. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also found borrowers were needlessly steered into expensive forbearances, during which interest accrues and credit toward forgiveness is paused.

The U.S. Department of Education announced Tuesday the interest rates on federal student loans for the 2024-2025 academic year. The interest rate on federal direct undergraduate loans will be 6.53%. For graduate students, loans will come with an 8.08% interest rate, compared with the current 7.05%. Plus loans for graduate students and parents will have a 9.08% interest rate, an increase from 8.05% now. The rise in interest rates could complicate the Biden administration's efforts to get the student loan crisis under control and relieve borrowers of the pain of interest accrual, experts say.

There's good news for at least some of the student loan borrowers who missed the April 30 deadline to qualify for quicker debt forgiveness: They may still be eligible for other relief options. Borrowers with multiple student loans who requested a so-called loan consolidation by the end of April 30 — a move that combined their federal student loans into one new federal loan — are able to get their debt sooner than they would have otherwise. They earned credit toward all their loans based on the one they had been making payments on the longest. To qualify, borrowers just had to be enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan, which, after 10, 20 or 25 years, depending on the plan, leads to debt cancellation. If you missed that deadline, you may still be eligible for relief.

The temporary suspension comes as the Biden administration overhauls the once-troubled federal student loan program. Why the pause is happeningWhat borrowers can expect during the transitionThe Education Department will not review PSLF form submissions for roughly a two-month period, it says. Meanwhile, from May 1 through July, it says, "borrowers will not be able to see their PSLF payment counts on MOHELA's website." The Biden administration on Wednesday announced that it would forgive more than $6.1 billion in student debt for 317,000 former students of The Art Institutes, the once giant chain of for-profit schools. The relief will go to borrowers who enrolled at any of the dozens of Art Institute campuses across the country between Jan. 1, 2004 and Oct. 16, 2017. "We must continue to protect borrowers from predatory institutions — and work toward a higher education system that is affordable to students and taxpayers," Cardona added. said The Art Institutes falsified average salaries among graduates, among other abuses.

urbazonSome student loan borrowers have until the end of Tuesday to take advantage of an opportunity to get their debt forgiven sooner than they would have otherwise. If these borrowers are enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan, it can mean that they're also on multiple different timelines to forgiveness. "This will ensure folks get the maximum number of months of credit towards student debt cancellation," Fox said. Usually, a student loan consolidation restarts a borrower's forgiveness timeline to zero, making it a terrible move for those working toward cancellation. You can apply for a Direct Consolidation Loan at StudentAid.gov or with your loan servicer.

The October report found that around 13% of Americans reported economic hardship over the prior year due to climate change. Climate change could cost Americans born in 2024 nearly $500,000, due to higher taxes and pricier housing and food, among many other factors, ICF, a consulting firm, recently found in a report commissioned by Consumer Reports.
