That added to the massive debt burdens already placed on the hospitals by their for-profit owners, deepening their financial woes. In January, MPT reported that its biggest tenant, a nationwide chain of 32 hospitals called Steward, could no longer pay its rent. The core idea was simple: to buy hospital real estate, pocket the lease payments, and use the money to reward investors. The more hospital real estate that MPT buys, the more money it makes in rent payments from the hospitals. But that doesn't mean that MPT's leaders didn't get rich off its hospital deals.

In a city infamous for its gangster past, some culprit filled in a Northside Chicago neighborhood landmark affectionately called by residents the “rat hole.”The indentation in the pavement on West Roscoe Street resembles the outline of a rat, claws tail and all. It was reported Friday on social media that the “rat hole” had been filled with a substance resembling white plaster. “Overall, people just appreciate that our wonderful block is getting attention — even if it’s to look at a rat hole,” Jeff VanDam told the Chicago Sun-Times for a story Friday. Chicago resident Winslow Dumaine learned about the “rat hole” from a friend and posted a photo earlier this month of it on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Chicago prides itself on all of the things that make Chicago difficult, and no matter how much Chicago hates rats, they love rats,” he added.

The campaign unearthed such racism that Black youths canvassing the Northside for Measure P were threatened. Measure P landed on the 2018 ballot. Sales-tax measures almost always require a two-thirds vote. Celedon’s legal counsel argued that because Measure P was initiated by citizens and not elected officials, only a simple majority was needed. Measure P, in its first year alone, raised $42 million.

A shooting at a Northside Hospital medical office in Atlanta this week left one woman dead and four injured. Photo: Megan Varner/Getty ImagesATLANTA—The deadly medical-office shooting here earlier this week highlighted a growing concern in the healthcare industry and state governments: violence in medical facilities. On May 3, a man opened fire with a handgun in the waiting room on the 11th floor of Northside Medical Midtown, a medical office building, according to Atlanta police. Brian Kemp had signed a new law, which partially took effect May 2, allowing hospital systems to establish their own campus police forces. Other states have also passed bills aimed at preventing attacks and increasing penalties for assaults, and more are in the works.

Atlanta Police Department/Handout via REUTERSATLANTA, May 4 (Reuters) - A former U.S. Coast Guardsman accused of killing a woman and wounding four others in a shooting in an Atlanta medical building was expected to make his first court appearance on Thursday. The suspect is accused of opening fire in the Northside Medical facility in the city's busy Midtown area at about 12:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday. The woman killed in the shooting was 39-year-old Amy St. Pierre, an employee of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the agency said. The mother of the suspect told a local ABC affiliate he was upset that doctors would not refill for him a prescription for Ativan, an anti-anxiety drug.
The suspect, Deion Duwane Patterson, 24, was armed when he was arrested Wednesday evening, Cobb County Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer said Thursday. “Just be careful.”A mother of two was killedAmy St. Pierre was killed in the Atlanta shooting, medical examiners confirmed. Generous supporter of worthy causes, she was the social conscience of our family.”The family of Amy St. Pierre, who was killed in the Midtown Atlanta shooting, said she was their pride and joy. On Friday, two of the victims were still in critical condition in the ICU, said Robert Jansen, chief medical officer at Grady Health System. They need help.”‘The impact … is something you can’t imagine’The rush of shooting victims who arrived at Grady Memorial Hospital is not uncommon, the chief medical officer said.
The address belongs to Northside Family Medicine and Urgent Care. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that officers had responded to the facility. Northside Hospital said on Twitter that it was cooperating with the authorities “following the shooting at our midtown #Atlanta location.”The hospital added, “This tragedy is affecting all of us, and we ask for patience and prayers at this time.”The police issued a public safety alert for people in the area. Atlanta Public Schools said “several” schools were in lockdown as a precaution. The police shared initial images from security cameras inside the building that showed a man wearing a mask, a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and a cross-body bag.
(CNN) Former professional boxer Mohamed Kayongo first got into boxing while spending time in the Ugandan government's army barracks, after the army had rescued him from the rebel groups that abducted him and trained him as a child soldier. Now, by mentoring young people in both Minneapolis, Minnesota in the US, and in his hometown of Kampala, Uganda, Kayongo is training the next generation to discover their own independence through boxing. Kayongo took up his role as a coach at Minneapolis' Northside Boxing Club after retiring from a successful career in boxing. In 2003, he launched a career as a professional boxer in Minnesota, eventually receiving US citizenship. "Once I got the freedom, I had to retire so I [could] pass it on to this coming generation," he said.
