☆ Whale Capsizes Fishing Boat Off New Hampshire Coast

A humpback whale that an expert said was looking for food breached the water and landed on a recreational boat near Portsmouth, N.H., on Tuesday, capsizing the vessel and ejecting two passengers, the United States Coast Guard said. The Northern New England sector of the Coast Guard received a mayday call for a 23-foot boat that had capsized when a whale shot up from underneath the boat and flopped onto it, about half a mile east of Odiorne Point State Park. The dramatic flip was caught on video by Colin Yager, 16, who was out fishing on another boat nearby, according to WHDH in Boston. The whale also appeared to be uninjured, the Coast Guard said. “It’s was a harrowing experience,” Gregg Paquette, one of the two passengers knocked over by the whale, told WHDH.

A nor’easter is forecast to bring an April onslaught of snow, rain, high winds and coastal flooding to the Northeastern United States this week, the National Weather Service said. Rain will lash areas of New York, Southern Connecticut and Northern New Jersey starting on Tuesday. LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — A man fatally shot at least 16 people at a restaurant and a bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night sparking a massive search for a person of interest who is a trained firearms instructor. El Niño, meaning "little boy" in Spanish, and La Niña, meaning "little girl" in Spanish, are opposite weather patterns driven by a change in the trade winds in the Pacific Ocean. This is the first time in four years that El Niño has been active as winter begins, according to the NOAA. While El Niño rains will alleviate ongoing droughts in some regions, it may also drive the development of drought conditions in the Pacific Northwest.

An arctic mix of cold air and whipping winds created teeth-chattering conditions across the Northeast on Saturday, with wind chills pushing temperatures into the double-digits below zero and causing “frost quakes” in some places. Northern New England experienced the worst of the wind chills and severe cold, but the frigid temperatures extended to New York and other parts of the region as well. “We’ve seen that areas with lower moose density tend to have healthier moose with fewer ticks,” said state Moose Biologist Lee Kantar, who is running the study. Maine's moose population is currently the largest of all the lower 48 states at over 60,000 animals, according to state figures, thanks to an ideal habitat and careful management of the annual moose hunt. Kantar is now leading research to test whether thinning the moose population through increased hunting can help. It is unclear, he said, what an ideal moose population would be for Maine but he hopes the study will help answer that. Each year, the Maine moose hunt draws around 50,000 applications in a lottery for the 2,000 to 3,000 moose permits typically issued.
