About 90 percent of the students who reported vaping said they used flavored products, citing favorites that tasted like fruit and candy. Public health experts also linked other state and local flavor bans and education campaigns to the falling high school vaping rate, which is the lowest in nearly a decade. In all, about 2.1 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes, down from 2.5 million last year. While the agency has authorized about two dozen vaping products for sale, thousands of illicit candy-colored flavored vapes have flooded the country and are top sellers. Someone in the US has a heart attack about every 40 seconds, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Heart disease including heart attack is the leading cause of death in the US, but most people survive their first heart attack and go on to lead a normal life, according to the American Heart Association. Additionally, pain could be a deterrent to lifestyle changes that might lower someone’s risk of another heart attack, such as exercise. Dangas said the new study could remind doctors to pay particular attention to their heart attack patients who talk about pain. Cardiac rehabilitation cuts the risk of death in the five years after a heart attack by about 35%, according to a 2016 study.

Nearly half of the marijuana smokers whose chest scans were reviewed for a study had mucus plugging their airways. Marijuana might do more damage to smokers than cigarettes alone. A study published Tuesday in the journal Radiology demonstrated higher rates of conditions including emphysema and airway inflammation among people who smoke marijuana than among nonsmokers and people who smoked only tobacco. Nearly half of the 56 marijuana smokers whose chest scans were reviewed for the study had mucus plugging their airways, a condition that was less common among the other 90 participants who didn’t smoke marijuana.

The analysis by Canadian researchers, published Tuesday in Radiology, compared the chest scans of marijuana smokers and tobacco-only smokers who were matched according to age. Unlike cigarettes, joints aren’t filtered, and marijuana smokers inhale more deeply and longer than cigarette smokers do. The marijuana smokers were identified by a search through the Ottawa Hospital records, using the terms “marijuana” and “cannabis.” Then Revah and her colleagues determined which of the marijuana smokers had had the chest scan. They then searched for nonsmokers and the cigarette smokers who had received chest scans to compare to the marijuana smokers. The marijuana smokers were ages 20 to 73, the nonsmokers were ages 19 to 75, and the tobacco-only smokers were ages 50 to 71.

CNN —Smoking weed while being a tobacco smoker may increase damage to the respiratory system, a new study found. Scans from an additional 57 nonsmokers with no preexisting lung disease, chemotherapy or other history of lung damage were used as controls. Lung damage was greater in those who smoke marijuana and tobacco compared with tobacco-only smokers, a preliminary study found. “We just don’t know if it’s a synergistic effect between the marijuana and the tobacco versus the marijuana alone.”Irreversible damage? In addition, tobacco smokers quickly exhale, while marijuana smokers often inhale and hold their breath to maximize the high, she said.
