CNN —Will Ferrell is excited about his candid and enlightening new documentary “Will & Harper,” and has hopes that it can spark compassion and conversation. The project – about a decades-long friendship between Ferrell and former “Saturday Night Live” head writer Harper Steele, who comes out to him as trans, which spurs the pair to go on a road trip together – is currently streaming on Netflix. “When we sat down with Netflix we made it clear that we wanted this out before the election,” Ferrell told Variety at the film’s recent Los Angeles premiere. “Will & Harper” explores Steele’s transition later in life and the questions Ferrell has to better understand her experience. Nothing is left off the table during their cross-country road trip, as the pair share both heartwarming and challenging moments during their travels in the documentary.

The study found that self-reported suicide attempts among these young people did not seem to increase while these bills were under debate in their state. But once the bills became law, the researchers saw a statistically significant increase in suicide attempts among young trans and nonbinary people who lived in those states. “Enacted anti-transgender laws may really be a source of increased minority stress that leads to increased suicide risk or other mental health issues,” Nath said. When legislation is affirming of a member of the community, research shows, suicide attempts decrease. “So it’s not surprising that these laws we now see are demonstrated to have an association with risk of suicide attempts.”

The memorial is especially significant for its setting in the capital of Tennessee, where trans rights have recently been targeted. A gifted young Nashville soul singer who saw too few opportunities for herself as a Black trans performer in the Jim Crow South of the late 1950s, Shane joined a traveling carnival. LONDON — An artwork featuring the plaster face casts of hundreds of transgender people went on display Wednesday in London’s Trafalgar Square, where their features will be worn away by London’s wind and rain over the next 18 months. Mexican artist Teresa Margolles’ “Mil Veces un Instante (A Thousand Times in an Instant)” is a 3.3-metric-ton (3.6-US-ton) cube covered in face masks of 726 trans, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people. It’s the latest artwork placed atop the “Fourth Plinth,” a large stone pedestal in the central London square. The new sculpture evokes a Tzompantli, a rack used in Mesoamerican civilizations to display the skulls of captured enemies and sacrifice victims. It pays tribute to one of the artist’s friends, a transgender woman named Karla who was killed in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, in 2015.

The hotly anticipated results are in from a landmark pair of major clinical trials of a long-acting, injectable HIV-prevention drug that only requires dosing every six months. The pharma giant has already secured approval for the injectable drug in treating highly drug-resistant HIV. Given the clear statistical superiority of lenacapavir over Truvada, the trial’s blinded phase will now be ended several months early. When taken as prescribed, Truvada is over 99% effective at preventing HIV; Descovy is comparably effective. CNN —A drug currently used to treat HIV has also been found to dramatically reduce the risk of infection, significantly more than the primary option available for pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP. In a Phase 3 clinical trial, 99.9% of participants who took a twice-a-year injection of lenacapavir for HIV prevention did not acquire an infection, according to data from drugmaker Gilead Sciences. There were only two cases among 2,180 patients – effectively reducing the risk of HIV infection by 96% and proving 89% more effective than Truvada, a pill taken once a day. It’s a “significant breakthrough in HIV prevention,” according to a news release from the World Health Organization in July. Gilead said it will use these trial data to start the drug approval process in multiple countries by the end of the year.

A high school English teacher is suing a Wisconsin school district, alleging it did not renew his contract last year because he refused to use the preferred names of two transgender students. Argyle School District Superintendent Randy Refsland said in an email Tuesday night that he could not comment because the matter was being litigated in court. But after one of the students expressed unhappiness with the situation — the student's father was described as a fellow district teacher — the district demanded adherence to the policy of using students' preferred names and pronouns, according to the suit. Greul said that this fight over first names and pronouns will be crucial for "everyday Americans across the country." A 2022 report on pronouns by the Minnesota Department of Health says that the correct use of preferred pronouns "saves lives."

The twice-yearly injection of the drug lenacapavir can provide total protection against HIV infections, demonstrating 100% efficacy in Phase 3 trial data released by drugmaker Gilead and published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.
