Every year, researchers in economics are awarded the Nobel Prize, alongside a hefty sum in winnings. All you have to do is bag a Nobel Prize. Franco Modigliani, an MIT professor who nabbed the Nobel in economics in 1985 , got about $225,000 in winnings. But, ultimately, he wanted to spend his winnings according to his own research on people's saving and spending habits. So when he was asked how he'd spend what was, in 2017 dollars, around $1.1 million in winnings, Thaler told reporters : "I will try to spend it as irrationally as possible."

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Swedish media say the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences may have announced the winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry prematurely. Public broadcaster SVT said the academy sent a press release by mistake early Wednesday that contained the names of the winners. The press release said the prize went to three U.S.-based scientists for the “discovery and synthesis of quantum dots,” according to SVT. On Monday, Hungarian-American Katalin Karikó and American Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discoveries that enabled the creation of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. The chemistry prize means Nobel season has reached its halfway stage.

In 2012, prize money was reduced from 10 million crowns to 8 million as the Foundation looked to shore up its finances. The prize amount was increased to 9 million in 2017 and in 2020 to 10 million - where it was prior to 2012. In 2013, the prizes for achievements in science, literature and peace - which were first awarded in 1901 - were worth around 1.2 million dollars, despite the cut in the Swedish currency sum to 8 million crowns. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is the first of this year's prizes and will be announced on Oct. 2 followed by Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Peace on the following days.

The Nobel Foundation on Saturday retracted its invitation to Russia, citing "strong reactions." Russia's ambassador to Sweden will no longer attend the Nobel Prize awards ceremony in Stockholm. Russian diplomats will still be invited to the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony in Oslo, Norway. The invitations prompted some Swedish politicians to announce they would boycott this year's awards ceremony. However, "As before," diplomats from Russia, Iran, and Belarus will still be invited to attend a separate, parallel ceremony for the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway.
