A Nissan Ariya electric car is on display during 2020 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2020) at China International Exhibition Center on September 27, 2020 in Beijing, China. Nissan is targeting an additional 1 million vehicle sales over the next three years and a 30% reduction in electric vehicle production costs by 2030, the Japanese carmaker announced Monday. In a new medium-term business plan, Nissan also said it would launch 30 new models by fiscal year 2026, with 16 of these electrified. "Faced with extreme market volatility, Nissan is taking decisive actions guided by the new plan to ensure sustainable growth and profitability." The country boasts the world's largest and most crowded EV market and its automakers are exerting significant downward pressure on prices.

Andrew Merry | Moment | Getty ImagesDETROIT — The buzz around electric vehicles is wearing off. U.S. EV sales were a record 1.2 million units last year, representing 7.6% of the overall national market, Cox Automotive estimates. "Moving on to less tech-savvy buyers will slow the EV market share growth over the next few years." Automakers wanted to emulate Tesla's success, with some promising to exclusively offer EVs in the not-too-distant future. "Toyota is almost completely absent from the [battery electric vehicle] market yet will gain more U.S. market share than any other car company this year.

New York CNN —Electric vehicles have 79% more problems than other vehicles, according to Consumer Reports’ latest annual auto reliability survey. The problems arise because electric cars are mostly new models, and recently-introduced car models generally tend to have more issues, regardless of what propels them. Besides that, electric vehicles tend to be higher priced models with more sophisticated technology features, from additional safety sensors to more gadgets and doo-dads. Electric pickup trucks, in particular, tended to fare the worst in Consumer Reports’ reliability survey. Not all electric vehicles are so unreliable, though, according to Consumer Reports’ survey data.

CNN —Thanks to growing competition in the market, and some reticence from consumers, automakers and car dealers are offering huge discounts on electric vehicles, particularly luxury models. In September 2022, the average electric vehicle purchased in the United States, excluding Teslas, went for about $1,500 over sticker price. (Remember, for most new vehicles, the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, or sticker price, is just a suggestion, with the final selling price usually higher or lower.) In sheer dollars, the average price paid for a non-Tesla electric vehicle actually went up slightly over the past year. When it comes to styling, the Ariya isn't quite as futuristic looking as a Kia EV6 or Polestar 2, but it isn't boring either. It's stylish and somewhat distinctive, but not over the top. The 2023 Nissan Ariya. Tim Levin/Insider

FASHIONABLY LATE The Nissan Ariya EV crossover, originally expected to hit the U.S. market last year, was delayed by Covid and the industry-wide chip shortage. In the interim, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 changed the eligibility rules for EV tax credits. DURING ELECTRIC vehicles’ awkward adolescence, a lot of things need to get better: charging infrastructure, battery performance (range/recharging) and, most pressingly, cost. Nissan ’s new Ariya an all-electric family crossover, captures the moment like a high-school photo—both the promise and the pimples. To the good: The Ariya is rock solid, next-level quiet and comfortable, fun to drive, fun to look at and to connect with (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Siri and Alexa).
