This week, The New York Times restaurant critic, Pete Wells, has revisited his list of the 100 best restaurants in New York City, adding new places, dropping others and changing his rankings of many old favorites. Read Pete Wells’s list of the 100 best restaurants in New York City in 2024. With that in mind, we’re asking readers which places top their own New York City restaurant lists, and why. We won’t publish any part of your submission without reaching out to you and hearing back. We also won’t use your contact information for any reason other than to follow up with you, nor will we share it outside our newsroom.

Boots, Backpack and a Ubiquitous App

Whatever you imagined, that hiker is probably using the app AllTrails. Even people who don’t know what a CamelBak is or who have no idea what the term “out-and-back” means. In the world of AllTrails, a hiker of any skill level is still a hiker. Many of them find the app in the same way. “It’s a free app, so we were like, ‘We’ll download it and see what happens.’ We never deleted it.”

This week, Where to Eat columnist emeritus Pete Wells has an ode to the patty melt that will send you running to one of the six New York City restaurant versions he spotlights, or the nearest diner. Patty melts, after all, have long been the bread and butter (and caramelized onions) of the old-school diner, institutions that are in increasingly short supply in New York, but to quote “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” are “not dead yet.”I grew up with Waffle House as my go-to diner and, for the record, I like my double hash browns smothered. Once I moved to New York, I nursed many a hangover at Tina’s Place in Bushwick, around for more than 80 years. Later I became fascinated with diners for millennials, by millennials like Golden Diner and Baby Blues Luncheonette, but I always come home to the unfussy and affordable comfort of the old school.

In recent years, the prospect of heavy rains might have sounded good to many people living in California, where drought and wildfires have been the main worries. That was not the case on this weekend, as Hurricane Hilary moved north from the coast of Baja California in Mexico and threatened to dump six to 10 inches of rain on the region. After three of the driest years in California history, much of the state is currently free of drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Storms fueled by “atmospheric rivers” this winter led to flooding and destruction across the state, but they also relieved severe drought conditions across wide swaths of the state, including Los Angeles and San Diego Counties, both of which were in Hilary’s path. Heavy winter rain, as well as record amounts of snow in the Sierra Nevada mountains, also has filled many of the state’s reservoirs well above historical averages, according to California Water Watch, a daily tracker maintained by the California Department of Water Resources.

The State of Pizza in the Pizza State

And a New New Haven SliceIf Chrissy’s is repping the New York pie, then Lala’s in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is the Connecticut delegate. This city isn’t exactly head over heels for rival pizza styles, so it’s particularly brave of Grimm Artisanal Ales to give over its entire rooftop to apizza (the New Haven term for its local style). I’ve been a fan of Grimm for a long time — it was going hard on light-bodied sours during the New England I.P.A. Go for the tomato pie, a cracker-thin pizza with shaved garlic, or the cozy pie with chunks of potato. You want New York pizza?

If you’re the type of person, as I am, who likes to try new restaurants as much as possible, keeping up can be tough. “How do you keep up with all these restaurants?” is a question I get a lot from my fellow dining enthusiasts. My list has all the restaurants that I want to visit, organized by borough with descriptions of what they serve. I tick off restaurants as I try them, to great satisfaction. Location, location, locationI know a lot of professional and amateur diners who love to use the Saved feature on Google Maps.

The Black-Owned Restaurants of Bed-Stuy

This spring, while looking for a new apartment, I realized how much change had taken place. I might qualify as someone who has contributed to the gentrification of Bed-Stuy, but I also look like I belong. But I found a rent-stabilized apartment blocks away from my old place. When a new restaurant or business opens in this corner of Bed-Stuy, I wonder: Is it Black-owned? Walk up Lewis Avenue past Peaches on a weekend morning and it’s spilling over with Black and brown customers.

Closer to home, an easier alfresco option might be your very own backyard (or stoop, sidewalk, courtyard or fire escape). Yotam Ottolenghi has a new recipe this week that’s slightly more involved, but just as colorful and fresh. Zaalouk with tahini is a Moroccan salad with spiced tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, all coated in a plush tahini-lemon dressing. Scoop it up with bread as a light meal, or serve it alongside roasted meats or fish for something more substantial. I ate it with flaky sea salt sprinkled on top and some vanilla ice cream on the side.

I’m looking forward to eating outdoors as much as humanly possible before it gets unbearably hot. That said, it’s reader question time and, as usual, my inbox was full of thoughtful and fun requests, including where to go for large-format dining, where to find carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style artichokes) and where to have great nonalcoholic drinks. As always, please email your questions to wheretoeat@nytimes.com, and you may see them answered in a future newsletter. One of our favorite things to do with friends is to go out to eat where fixed-menu, family-style dining is offered. — Joy W.Francie, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has a whole roast duck for $135 that’s presented with various flora before it’s carved up.

Memorial Day is here, and with it, the unofficial start of summer. Summer is just around the corner, and we’re here to help you navigate all the city has to offer — with some help from expert New Yorkers. (A scheduling note: Unlike in previous years, the Summer in the City newsletter will be monthly this season, with editions coming in late June, July and August that will cover the month following each of those dates. We’ll also be featuring photos by Daniel Arnold, a photographer based in New York. And for eating recommendations, head over to the Where to Eat: New York City newsletter, written by Nikita Richardson, one of our Food editors.)
