Taiwan's new President Lai Ching-te speaks on stage during the inauguration ceremony outside the Presidential office building in Taipei, Taiwan, on May 20, 2024. China's military started two days of "punishment" drills around Taiwan on Thursday in what it said was a response to "separatist acts", just days after new Taiwan President Lai Ching-te took office and called on Beijing to cease its threats. China detests Lai, saying he is a "separatist", and it has denounced his inauguration speech on Monday. The Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) said it had started joint military drills, involving the army, navy, air force and rocket force, in areas around Taiwan at 7:45 a.m. (2345 GMT). The drills are being conducted in the Taiwan Strait, the north, south and east of Taiwan, as well as areas around the Taiwan-controlled islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu and Dongyin, the command said in a statement.

Stocks are riding high heading into Nvidia's earnings results after the market close Wednesday. U.S. stock market benchmarks have been hovering near all-time highs. But Nvidia will test the sustainability of recent market highs given its huge size in broad market indexes, as well as its influence over investor psychology. Consider that the Jensen Huang-led company is in more than 6,000 long-only institutional funds, and in just 21 short-only funds, according to data from S & P Capital IQ. Beat and raise Many investors expect a strong showing from Nvidia will keep markets on their recent upward ascent.

The 61-year-old Silicon Valley veteran running Nvidia has overseen a $2 trillion surge in its value since the start of last year. Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesThe hype behind Nvidia's chips is no joke. But competitors have been busy developing AI chips of their own to reduce reliance on Nvidia's increasingly expensive offerings. AMD CEO Lisa Su, who's Huang's cousin, is aiming to pry Nvidia customers away with a chip named the MI300X that costs between $10,000 and $15,000. If they succeed in using Triton, they could be one step closer to a future in which alternatives to Nvidia's chips are easier to use.

Nvidia's Hopper chips include the H100, which was announced in 2022 and faced severe supply shortages last year as the AI gold rush intensified. Tuesday's AWS news represents a pushout in demand for Nvidia chips, not a loss of it. That would be the so-called "digestion" phase for AI chips that Wall Street has been speculating about since last year. If anything, AWS deciding to wait for the more-powerful Blackwell chips could mean the digestion phase is further out on the horizon than initially thought. Unlike last year, when Nvidia's chips were in such short supply, there are now rival chips out there, such as AMD's MI300X, which is angling for a corner of the inferencing market .

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesLONDON — U.K. inflation could be about to hit a major milestone, with some forecasting that a sharp fall in the April print will take the headline rate below the Bank of England's 2% target. That would represent a plunge from the current level of 3.2% and could "make or break" a June interest rate cut, economists say. Ashley Webb, U.K. economist at Capital Economics, said that if the headline rate does fall below 2% in April, as he expects, it would be "momentous." "This will be crucial in determining whether the first interest rate cut from 5.25% will happen in June (as we expect) or in August. We think inflation will fall further, perhaps even to 1.0% later this year," Webb said in a Friday note.

Discovery's Max was supposed to become a Netflix killer when it rolled out a year ago. It combined HBO Max's prestige originals with Discovery+'s reality TV fare to capture viewers as they migrate away from WBD's bedrock traditional TV business. Related storiesGiven its low penetration, it's possible that Max can add tens of millions of subscribers, he said. WBD execs hope the crackdown will encourage people to subscribe to the three-in-one bundle of Max, Disney+, and its sister app, Hulu. While the overlap between Netflix and Disney+ is high, about half of Disney+ subscribers don't subscribe to Max, and vice versa, so each has a chance to significantly increase its audience.

Oil storage drums stacked in the Keihin industrial area of Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, on Monday, April 15, 2024. Oil prices fell in early Asian trade on Tuesday, with investors anticipating higher-for-longer U.S. inflation and interest rates will depress consumer and industrial demand. "Fears of weaker demand led to selling as the prospect of Fed rate cut became more distant," said analyst Toshitaka Tazawa at Fujitomi Securities. Lower interest rates reduce borrowing costs, freeing up funds which could boost economic growth and demand for oil. OPEC+ could extend some voluntary output cuts if demand fails to pick up, people with knowledge of the matter previously told Reuters.

If such a clash between North Korea and South Korea occurred, it could quickly spiral into wider conflict. SOPA Images via Getty ImagesA notable shift came earlier this year, when North Korea declared South Korea "our principal enemy" and threatened to "thoroughly annihilate" it along with the US if provoked. Wall Street has great expectations for Nvidia 's earnings on Wednesday, according to Evercore ISI. Yet, how the artificial intelligence darling's stock will react is less clear — and it is likely to have big implications for the entire stock market, the firm said. The share price reaction will likely cause a ripple effect, he said. Over the past year, Nvidia's stock has had an "almost unimaginably close" day-to-day correlation to the S & P 500 of 0.95, he pointed out. which helped catalyze 2023's S & P 500 Fall Fall … the one certain thing is that NVDA's share price reaction, while difficult to gauge, will have consequences for the S & P 500 as a whole," Emanuel said.

China's Ministry of Commerce announced sanctions against Boeing and two other defense companies Monday for arms sales to Taiwan, on the day of Taiwan's presidential inauguration. The move is the latest in a series of sanctions Beijing has announced in recent years against defense companies for weapons sales to Taiwan, a self-ruled island that China considers as part of its own territory. Lai Ching-te, Taiwan's new president, has vowed to strengthen Taiwan's security through imports of advanced fighters and other technology and strengthening its domestic defense industry.
