Advertisement"He was recruited by AIPAC to run against us because we called for a permanent cease-fire," Bowman said of Latimer. In January, Bowman lost the support of the liberal pro-Israel group J Street over his rhetoric on Israel. Like Bowman, Latimer has a blunt and direct speaking style that sometimes leades to gaffes, such as his invocation of the racist lynching of Emmett Till when commenting on the sexual misconduct allegations against then-Gov. When asked about Bowman's charge of racism, Latimer pointed to his appointment of Ken Jenkins, a Black man, as his deputy county executive. Bowman and Latimer have known each other for nearly four years, first meeting for coffee after the congressman's 2020 primary victory.

There is no loneliness epidemic

With the report, a steady trickle of headlines about the epidemic turned into a firehose: "Loneliness is at epidemic levels and it's killing Americans" (USA Today); "This Epidemic of Isolation Is as Harmful as Smoking" (Bloomberg); "America's Loneliness Epidemic Comes for the Restaurant" (The Atlantic). There's one problem: The loneliness epidemic doesn't exist. Even the authors caution in their meta-analysis that "the frequently used term 'loneliness epidemic' seems exaggerated." Calling it a "loneliness epidemic," then, may be a bit like calling COVID a "sneezing pandemic." "There are many, many surveys that are just making up questions about loneliness and are not using the UCLA Loneliness Scale or some other validated loneliness scale," she says.

NEW YORK (AP) — An attorney for a longtime advice columnist who won an $83.3 million defamation award against Donald Trump suggested Monday that a new defamation lawsuit was possible against the ex-president after he resumed verbal attacks against her at a weekend rally. “As we said after the last jury verdict, we continue to monitor every statement that Donald Trump makes about our client, E. Jean Carroll,” Kaplan said. Photos You Should See View All 60 Images“This woman is not a believable person,” Trump said Saturday. The trial judge instructed the jury that it was only to determine what damages, if any, Trump owed as a result of his 2019 statements. That jury, in awarding Carroll $5 million, also found that Trump defamed her with statements made in October 2022.

But department stores, focused on America’s middle class, are fading. The victims of shifting consumer tastes were not the department stores that anchored the local mall, it was the small, locally owned stores along downtown shopping districts that were closing their doors. And possibly even more than the big box competitors, department stores have suffered from consumers shifting to buying items online rather than in person. The steady closing of the department stores that once served as “anchors” of malls across suburban America has been another nail in the coffin of many malls, hurting the department stores that remained in hollowed-out malls with a fraction of their earlier traffic. Saunders said one of the primary problem for Macy’s is that its holding company, formerly known as Federated Department Stores, spent much of its resources on buying other department store brands, such May’s Department Stores, and Filene’s, rather than investing in the stores its held.

The judge overseeing E. Jean Carroll's second trial against Donald Trump is making sure it doesn't get out of hand. AdvertisementBefore jury selection even got underway in E. Jean Carroll's second trial against Donald Trump on Tuesday, the judge put a tight muzzle on the former president. The judge also ensured that Trump couldn't create a dramatic scene by yelling "I object" in the middle of the trial. Carroll took Trump to trial last spring — although he didn't show up to court in that case — for a similar set of claims. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 21 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday declared that Maryland's licensing requirements for people seeking to buy handguns were unconstitutional, citing a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision last year that expanded gun rights. "Maryland has not shown that this regime is consistent with our nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation," U.S. Richardson called the Maryland law an "additional, preliminary step" that subjected law-abiding people to a 30-day waiting period before they could begin the usual process to acquire a firearm through a separate background check system. A spokesperson for Maryland Attorney General Andrew Brown, a Democrat who is defending the law in court, said his office was "weighing options for next steps in this case." Maryland had said its law mirrored historical limitations on "dangerous" people owning firearms.

US appeals court upholds Illinois assault weapons ban

REUTERS/Cheney Orr/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 3 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday upheld an Illinois state ban on assault-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines enacted after a 2022 mass shooting in Chicago's Highland Park suburb that left seven people dead and dozens more wounded. The Democratic-backed state measure bans the sale and distribution of many kinds of high-powered semiautomatic "assault weapons," including AK-47 and AR-15 rifles, and large-capacity magazines. In one notable aspect of its reasoning in upholding the Illinois law, the appellate panel cited a U.S. Supreme Court opinion last year that struck down New York state's limits on carrying concealed handguns outside the home. In August, a divided Illinois Supreme Court upheld the assault weapons ban in a separate case brought at the state court level, rejecting arguments that the law violated the state constitution by not applying the ban equally to all citizens. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that California's assault weapons ban would remain in force while the state attorney general appealed a lower-court decision declaring that 30-year-old measure unconstitutional.

The judge has fined Trump $15,000 for twice violating that gag order. A three-judge panel, all appointed by Democratic presidents, scheduled oral arguments on Trump's appeal of the gag order for Nov. 20. Trump's lawyers have argued the order violates his free speech rights under the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment. In the New York case, Engoron said on Friday he has an "unfettered right" to consult with his staff members throughout the trial, and that the gag order was intended to protect their safety. Failure to honor the gag order, the judge said, "shall result in serious sanctions."

It represents the latest case to come before the Supreme Court involving the NRA, a group closely aligned with Republicans that has opposed gun control measures and backed pivotal lawsuits that have widened U.S. gun rights. The NRA was founded in New York in 1871 and was incorporated as a non-profit in the state. At issue was whether Vullo wielded her regulatory power to coerce New York financial institutions into cutting ties with the NRA in violation of its free speech rights under the First Amendment. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2022 said those also should have been dismissed, prompting the NRA's appeal to the Supreme Court. Donald Trump has attacked the civil fraud case against him as political. AdvertisementAdvertisementFormer President — and 2024 Republican presidential frontrunner — Donald Trump has long complained that the legal cases against him are political. The New York Attorney General's $250 million civil fraud trial that began Monday morning, he says, is a "witch hunt." One of Trump's lawyers, Alina Habba, lambasted New York Attorney General Letitia James, an elected Democrat. The attorney general's lawsuit alleges that Trump, Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and two other Trump Organization executives are liable for fraud for misrepresenting the values of the company's property in financial statements submitted to banks for loans.

The Supreme Court refused to hear a case challenging New York's rent stabilization law. The plaintiffs — the Rent Stabilization Association, the Community Housing Improvement Program, and individual landlords — filed their suit in 2019 after New York reformed its 1969 law, adding new limits to how much landlords can raise rent. This is the second time since 2012 that the Supreme Court has refused to hear a case challenging New York's rent stabilization laws. Former U.S. President Donald Trump departs from Trump Tower to give a deposition to New York Attorney General Letitia James who sued Trump and his Trump Organization, in New York City, U.S., April 13, 2023. In a filing with a New York state court in Manhattan, Attorney General Letitia James said her valuation and accounting experts believe Trump falsely boosted his net worth by between $1.9 billion and $3.6 billion a year over a decade. The attorney general wants a $250 million fine, and to bar Trump and his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump from leading their family business, the New York City-based Trump Organization. Citing her experts, James said Trump may have inflated his net worth by $3.5 billion to $3.6 billion every year from 2014 to 2019, the last three while Trump was in the White House. Building backyard tiny homes can be expensive. There are three states that will help with the cost, by providing homeowners with grant money. These backyard homes, called accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, are small housing units that homeowners can build on their property. In California, where most backyard homes are being built, ADU building permits cost anywhere from $450 to $15,000 — even before construction starts, according to Backyard Unlimited, a company that builds ADUs.
