The Nicest Place on the Internet

New York Times Games — which includes the Crossword, Spelling Bee, Wordle, Connections and more — has a devoted fandom. But I think the word “community” is a better way to describe them. I told my readers that Wordplay was a party, and that everyone was invited. Wordplay began talking directly to beginners, because I knew that every day new people pick up crosswords for the first time. The more experienced solvers rose to the occasion in the comments, and began helping beginners find their way.

Tracy Bennett Brings Whimsy to Wordle
  + stars: | 2023-12-31 | by ( Emmett Lindner | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Times Insider explains who we are and what we do, and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together. When Tracy Bennett sits down to play Wordle, she does so with a word of six — not five — letters in mind: Whimsy. “I got one green letter and four gray letters,” she adds, referring to the game’s color-coded squares that signify which guessed letters are correct. Some may find the exercise meritless — Ms. Bennett does, after all, already know the answer. As Wordle’s first and only editor, she knows every answer to every Wordle puzzle about six weeks in advance.

Christina Iverson and Tracy Bennett, who make puzzles for The New York Times, are offering a tidy potluck of seasonal games for NYT Cooking readers. All you need are pencils, paper and volunteers to play the game host and keep score. First, we have a know-your-tablemates guessing game that we considered calling Family F(y)ood before settling on Talking Turkey. Another game, Two Truths and a Pie, asks players to spot the untruths mixed in with facts about the holiday. Finally, for dessert, there’s a round and yummy Midi-size crossword that may speak to your sweet (or savory) tooth.

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about how to get better at Connections, the newest game in the New York Times Games catalog. While there’s not a single best strategy, we’ve had a lot of fun over the past few months developing our own approaches. We spoke to a few experienced solvers and the game’s editors to get some tips. Don’t let the pursuit of a “perfect” solve stand in the way of having a good time and solving the puzzle. Have a PlanWe don’t expect you to know every possible way a category can come together, but it’s helpful to know the most common ways that they’re structured.

How to Talk About Wordle

If the tile turns green, the letter is in the word, and it is in the correct spot. If the tile turns yellow, the letter is in the word, but it is not in the correct spot. If the tile turns gray, the letter is not in the word. GlossaryThanks to reader Outside Observer for compiling this glossary of common terms people use when talking about Wordle. Golf terms — Not to be confused with Wordle Golf, many solvers use golf terms in reference to their scores, sometimes with an emoji.

Delta Air Lines will be the first US global carrier to offer free Wi-Fi on most domestic mainline flights. JetBlue Airways, which is considered a low-cost airline, already offers free Wi-Fi on all of its planes. As of now, only Delta-operated aircraft will offer free Wi-Fi — this does not apply to its codeshare or regional partners. The new offering is in partnership with T-Mobile, which already offers free internet onboard many Delta flights to users of its cellular network. Delta, which has been regularly praised for its on-time performance, safety record, and cabin products, is bringing more than just free Wi-Fi to its planes this year.
