New York Democrats offered a wide array of excuses for their disastrous 2022 midterms, when Republicans flipped four seats outside New York City on their way to winning a narrow US House majority. Now, less than two months out from the 2024 general election, the state party, its campaign season allies, chastened candidates and Gov. D’Esposito is one of five New York GOP freshmen facing an onslaught from Democrats determined to claw back suburban voters. “New York is the reason Democrats lost the House in 2022,” said Pamela Shifman, president of the Democracy Alliance, a liberal group spending big in New York this year. “There’s more focus than there was the last couple cycles, both from the state party, but also obviously the national committees,” the strategist said.

Democrats, who represent most of those areas, fiercely objected at the time, accusing the GOP of using tax policy to wage a culture war. Schumer has vowed that if he’s still majority leader next year he will ensure the SALT cap expires at the end of 2025. I am glad to hear that former President Trump now feels the same way,” Lawler wrote on X. “Donald Trump and Mike Lawler, who helped elect him, are the reason we even have a limitation on the SALT deduction. The anti-debt Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget projected that eliminating the SALT cap would raise the cost of extending the 2017 tax law by $1.2 trillion.

CNN —The Donald Trump vice presidential reality selection show is heating up, with pundits laying out lists of possible people Trump might choose. They range from South Carolina GOP Sen. Tim Scott, to Ohio Sen. JD Vance, to even former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Trump won’t select a running mate who will help expand his voting base, as he did in 2016 when he named then-Indiana Gov. Pablo Martinez Monsivais/APWith those type of schemes, Trump needs a vice president who will not push back like Pence did. In fact, there’s plenty of time for the other contestants vying to be Trump’s VP pick to debase themselves with public displays of affection.

CNN —Abortion rights are on the ballot Tuesday as Americans head to the polls for state and local races that will set the stage for next year’s presidential election. (Both oppose abortion rights.) Abortion (literally) on the ballot in OhioThe 2022 midterm elections showed that when abortion rights are on the ballot, voters overwhelmingly favored protecting or expanding access. This is the only abortion rights ballot initiative before voters this year. Though not explicitly on the ballot, abortion has featured prominently in the campaign, with Beshear arguing that Cameron will double down on the commonwealth’s already harsh restrictions.

Kevin Lamarque | ReutersThe messy race to elect the next Republican speaker of the House of Representatives is injecting chaos into the typically genteel world of high-dollar GOP fundraising, threatening to disrupt a vital element of the Republican strategy to maintain its House majority. One faction of wealthy donors is intent on exacting revenge on the eight Republicans who voted with Democrats to oust former speaker Kevin McCarthy, according to people familiar with the matter. They're all saying, 'don't give, don't raise any money,'" a Republican fundraiser said. "If you have scheduled a fundraiser for any Republican House member who refuses to vote for Scalise, cancel it. Losing Kevin McCarthy will be damaging for fundraising," a longtime Wall Street Republican fundraiser said.

Rep. George Santon waits as fellow Representatives cast their votes for Speaker of the House at the Capitol in Washington, DC, on January 3. “We cannot wait any longer.”Meanwhile, New York Republicans have sought to distance themselves from Santos, insisting they knew nothing about his shadowy past, with some repeatedly urging him to leave office. “I reiterate my call for George Santos to step down,” New York GOP Rep. Mike Lawler said in a statement. New York Rep. Nicole Malliotakis told CNN, “I’m not surprised. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he will look at the charges before determining if he thinks Santos should be removed from Congress.
Trump has said he would stay in the race if he is indicted. Trump, meanwhile, is making a forward-looking pitch to voters, NBC News’ Allan Smith and Jonathan Allen report. And the Washington Post reports Friday that prosecutors investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot have obtained a report commissioned by Trump’s campaign that undercut his falsehoods about the election. Santos mulls re-election: New York GOP Rep. George Santos told the Associated Press he is a “maybe” on running for re-election. Sparks fly in the Windy city: Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., endorsed Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson in Chicago’s mayoral race on Thursday.
Rep. George Santos has admitted he lied about his résumé, but has denied committing any crimes. Republican officials in New York said Rep. George Santos (R., N.Y.) should resign from Congress amid investigations into the freshman lawmaker, who has faced scrutiny for his campaign finances and lies he told during his campaign. “His lies were not mere fibs. He disgraced the House of Representatives,” said Nassau County Republican Chairman Joseph Cairo. He was joined in the call by Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R., N.Y.), Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and other officials.
A fundraiser for George Santos allegedly posed as Kevin McCarthy's chief of staff, per CNBC. According to FEC filings, the fundraiser was paid almost $100k by Santos' campaign. According to CNBC, Santos' campaign paid Miele almost $50,000 for fundraising during the embattled lawmaker's failed 2020 run for Congress. Meyer, McCarthy's office, and Santos' campaign did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment. The non-partisan watchdog Campaign Legal Center (CLC) also filed a complaint with the FEC on Monday, alleging that Santos and his 2022 campaign violated campaign-finance laws by engaging in a "straw donor scheme."
Former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard left the Democratic Party before campaign with far-right Republicans. "Nope," Sanders said when Insider asked if he'd like to talk about former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, an early supporter of his 2016 presidential campaign. "I'm not surprised," said Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia, another former Armed Services Committee colleague of Gabbard's. Hawaii's two Democratic senators — Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz — both declined to speculate about what may be driving Gabbard's political movement, despite serving with her in the Hawaii delegation. "I think she's home," Hirono said repeatedly when asked what she thought had happened, referring to Gabbard's political home.
Noem hinted at replacing RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel, a staunch supporter of Trump. Talks of replacing McDaniel were kicked up as Republicans tossed around blame over the midterms. Kristi Noem said the GOP should consider replacing Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel after heavy midterm losses. McDaniel, who has served as chair of the RNC since 2017, has also been an ardent supporter of Trump. Despite blame for the midterms being spread around the GOP, McDaniel indicated on November 14 she planned to run for another two-year term, Politico reported.
MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell is running for RNC chair against incumbent Ronna McDaniel. "With all my due diligence and in prayer, I am 100% running for RNC chairman against Ronna McDaniel," Lindell said. Former President Donald Trump, Lindell's longtime ally, hasn't yet publicly supported his bid against McDaniel. Lindell told Insider that he hasn't spoken to Trump about the matter yet. As for McDaniel, she has signaled that she plans to run for another term as RNC chair, per Politico.
Zeldin hopes to end a two-decade drought for Republicans seeking statewide office in New York. “New Yorkers are ready,” Zeldin said. Her support in a primary for an upstate congressional district of right-wing political activist Carl Paladino who lost to the state Republican chair drew the ire of some in the state party. While there are about 3 million unaffiliated voters in New York, a successful Republican candidate has to make inroads with registered Democrats. “When I got elected they were saying the same things about me that they’re saying about Zeldin,” Pataki said.
Ronna McDaniel said it was "unfair" to link GOP messaging to the attack on Paul Pelosi on Sunday. Nancy Pelosi, who has led House Democrats since 2003, has long been a political foil for the GOP. McDaniel pushed back against any allegations that GOP messaging was problematic or incited violence and instead flipped the narrative to lambast Democrats. "But I think the other thing to remember is, if this weren't Paul Pelosi, this criminal would probably be out on the street tomorrow." "But of course we wish Paul Pelosi a recovery.
U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R., N.Y.) has represented the eastern two-thirds of Suffolk County since 2015 and is attempting to unseat New York’s Democratic governor. Two men were shot Sunday afternoon in front of the Long Island home of U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin , the Republican candidate for governor of New York, according to police and Mr. Zeldin’s campaign. The men were taken to area hospitals where they are being treated, police said. Mr. Zeldin’s two daughters were home alone when they heard screaming and gunshots and called the police from the bathroom where they went to hide, Mr. Zeldin said. Mr. Zeldin and his wife were leading the Bronx Columbus Day Parade at the time.
