However, current and former OpenAI employees have been increasingly concerned about access to liquidity, according to interviews and documents shared internally. "We're incredibly sorry that we're only changing this language now," an OpenAI spokesperson told CNBC after the company changed course. In at least two tender offers, the sales limit for former employees was $2 million, compared to $10 million for current employees. In addition to current and former employees, OpenAI has a third tier for share sales that consists of ex-employees who now work at competitors. OpenAI said it's never canceled a current or former employee's vested equity or required a repurchase at $0.

The New ChatGPT Offers a Lesson in A.I. Hype
  + stars: | 2024-05-31 | by ( Brian X. Chen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When OpenAI unveiled the latest version of its immensely popular ChatGPT chatbot this month, it had a new voice possessing humanlike inflections and emotions. The new ChatGPT was released without most of its new features, including the improved voice (which the company told me it postponed to make fixes). Amid the delay, the company also deactivated the ChatGPT voice that some said sounded like the actress Scarlett Johansson, after she threatened legal action, replacing it with a different female voice. For now, what has actually been rolled out in the new ChatGPT is the ability to upload photos for the bot to analyze. The bot can also do real-time language translations, but ChatGPT will respond in its older, machine-like voice.

That’s not too surprising coming from Nicholls, whose 2009 novel “One Day” explored many of the same themes. It was the most enjoyable writing experience I’ve had for a long time. While hiking the coast-to-coast walk in England, author David Nicholls encountered some torrentially rainy days. I wanted the book to be partly about the comedy of miscommunication — the things we don’t say or the things we say and regret. You say you wanted the book to be in part about miscommunications and what ifs.

After 20 years of early rising, I'm up before the sun with no prompting required. The 9:17 a.m. alarm is also deeply ingrained; it's the official attendance time when I'm required to pause my instruction and take attendance. I will walk away from teaching and into early retirement at 59, which makes me more than a little nervous. While I'll be doing something I care deeply about, I will still be below the salary I earned this year. Now that I'll have the time in retirement, what will my new exercise regime look like?

Creators who suspect their work has been used to train OpenAI without their permission will probably wonder why they weren't offered an agreement in the first place.

OpenAI announced it would pull one of the ChatGPT voices named "Sky" after it created controversy for its resemblance to the voice of actress Scarlett Johansson in "Her," a movie about artificial intelligence. "We've heard questions about how we chose the voices in ChatGPT, especially Sky," the Microsoft -backed company posted on X. The news comes one week after OpenAI debuted a range of audio voices for ChatGPT, its viral chatbot, a new AI model called GPT-4o, and a desktop version of ChatGPT. Users watching the live demonstration of ChatGPT's audio capabilities immediately began to post on social media that the "Sky" voice sounded like Johansson in the movie. "Sky's voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice," the company wrote.

OpenAI unveils newest AI model, GPT-4o
  + stars: | 2024-05-13 | by ( Clare Duffy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
The new model, called GPT-4o, is an update from the company’s previous GPT-4 model, which launched just over a year ago. Rivals including Google and Meta have been working to build increasingly powerful large language models that power chatbots and can be used to bring AI technology to various other products. The OpenAI event came one day ahead of Google’s annual I/O developer conference, at which it’s expected to announce updates to its Gemini AI model. OpenAI executives demonstrate the company's latest large language model, GPT-4o. Free ChatGPT users will have a limited number of interactions with the new GPT-4o model before the tool automatically reverts to relying on the old GPT-3.5 model; paid users will have access to a greater number of messages with the latest model.

The comparisons to the female voice assistant from the movie "Her" were so obvious even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted about it. OpenAI clearly has made a voice assistant chatbot that is way more advanced than Siri currently is, and Tim Cook must be sweating a little. But Apple still has a big advantage whenever it updates Siri with an AI makeover: It's already the voice assistant on your iPhone — and that's huge.

Retired Australian Army Maj. Gen. Mick Ryan advocates for a change in Ukraine's war strategy. Ryan suggests Ukraine needs to push its narrative in Western media to counter Russia's influence. The Russian military has changed its warfighting capabilities, and the defense industry has been kicked into gear. Ukraine, he argued, must push its narrative to get through to Western media and dispute Russia's declarations of expected victory. Ryan said NATO and other partner nations should consider switching their perception of providing support from "defend Ukraine" to "defeat Russia in Ukraine."
