New Mexico's Legislature has approved a bill aimed at reducing pollution from cars and trucks by creating financial incentives for transportation fuel producers and importers to lower the carbon intensity of their products. The bill calls for a reduction in the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions for transportation fuels used in the state — of 20% by 2030 and 30% by 2040. It would require producers of high-polluting fuels to buy credits from producers and importers of low-carbon fuels. The transportation sector is the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in New Mexico behind the oil and natural gas industry. “I am concerned about what this bill will do to the price of transportation fuel," Sen. Greg Nibert of Roswell said during Tuesday's Senate floor debate.

Most lawmakers from the state, all Democrats, carefully sought to distance themselves from the order. AdvertisementAdvertisement"We have to find all the legal pathways that we possibly can to curb gun violence in our communities," Vasquez told Insider. "The governor is taking action and starting a conversation about addressing the epidemic of gun violence in our communities. The order has drawn national media attention, with even some Democrats and gun control activists criticizing Lujan Grisham's efforts as unconstitutional. Two Republican state lawmakers have called for the governor's impeachment, an effort that's dead on arrival in the Democratic-controlled legislature.

The sheriff who oversees Bernalillo County and the police chief in Albuquerque said they won’t enforce the governor's order because it violates constitutional rights. Lujan Grisham defended her order as necessary, and rebuffed any calls for impeachment. Some critics have said it’s concerning that only those who want to curb gun rights have the Democratic governor’s ear. Top law enforcement officials and prosecutors have said they weren’t consulted before Lujan Grisham sprung on them an order that even she admits will be ignored by criminals. The Catholic Church was among the few who joined longtime gun-control advocates on Monday in support of the order.

July is a hard month for a lot of us here in New Mexico, where thousands of people’s lives were upended by the test of the world’s first nuclear bomb. The people of New Mexico were the first human test subjects of the world’s most powerful weapon. The three-hour movie tells only part of the story of the Manhattan Project, which developed the bomb, and conducted the test code-named Trinity that day in July. It does not explore in any depth the costs of deciding to test the bomb in a place where my family and many others had lived for generations. The area of southern New Mexico where the Trinity test occurred was not, contrary to the popular account, an uninhabited, desolate expanse of land.

Los Alamos National LaboratorySituated 7,300 feet above sea level and roughly 35 miles from Santa Fe, the Los Alamos site seemed ideal for a secret laboratory.
