How the Snail-Mail Renaissance Is Soothing Americans Tired of Zoom
  + stars: | 2020-11-26 | by ( Rachel Wolfe | ) sentiment -0.84   time to read: 1 min
FED UP WITH the cold connection of virtual Netflix Parties and digital game nights, Americans are increasingly turning to old-fashioned letter writing to establish a more tactile and intimate rapport. Paper Source, a national stationery chain, reports that sales of “just because” cards, those not associated with life events, are up nearly 2,000% year-over-year since March. But these aren’t just letters, and the more ambitious missives, increasingly embellished and fun to look at, have started landing on social media, as an outlier form of expression called Mail Art.

"Tiger King's" Joe Exotic is trying to get President Donald Trump's attention for a pardon, The New York Times reported. Representatives for Maldonado-Passage reportedly ran up a $10,000 tab at Trump's hotel in an effort to get his attention, The Times reported. "Tiger King's" Joe Exotic, or Joseph Maldonado-Passage, is one of multiple people seeking President Donald Trump's pardon before he leaves office, The New York Times reported. Prior to Flynn's pardon, the president had already issued 28 pardons and 16 commutations, which reduce prison sentences. Back in April, a reporter mentioned during a press conference that one of the president's sons joked about lobbying Trump to pardon the zookeeper.

Six things to consider before you buy a new TV on Black Friday
  + stars: | 2020-11-26 | by ( Todd Haselton | ) + 0.00   time to read: +3 min
But, if you want to buy a TV that will keep impressing you for another decade, you might want to look for a couple of things that matter. So if you're planning to grab a new TV on Black Friday, there are a few things to consider before you buy. There are several standards, but in general a TV with HDR, combined with HDR content from a service like Netflix or Amazon Prime TV, can show a clearer picture in dark or bright scenes. Amazon builds Fire TV into some sets and there are lots of TVs that run Roku software. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, so try to play around with the TV before you buy it.

But while holiday movies have their fair share of queer fans, we have not been rewarded with many mainstream queer holiday love stories. It was only this year that Lifetime announced a holiday film starring two male leads (and Fran Drescher), “The Christmas Set-Up.” Hallmark, after much petitioning from fans, is debuting its first gaycentric holiday film, “The Christmas House,” this holiday season, as well. Stewart plays Abby, a lesbian millennial who plans to propose to her girlfriend Harper (Davis) on Christmas with Harper’s whole family as witnesses. There have been a handful of queer holiday films that predate “Happiest Season.” 2018’s “Lez Bomb,” written and directed by star Jenna Laurenzo, actually has a similar premise.

“The Queen’s Gambit,” Netflix’s fictional drama about a female chess prodigy, has pulled off an unlikely gambit of its own: It’s prompted one of the biggest surges in the popularity of chess among Americans since the days of Bobby Fischer’s dominance in the 1970s. The show has become Netflix’s most widely viewed scripted limited series, with 62 million households tuning in during the first 28 days after its Oct. 23 debut, the streaming company said. (Netflix now counts two minutes of watching as a view.) The impact is clear:...

Vance published his memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," in June 2016, no one could have foreseen how Donald Trump's imminent electoral victory would propel him into the role of America's de facto "poverty whisperer." "Hillbilly Elegy" and its convenient timing propelled the author to the top of the talking-head circuit. These shared experiences make it obvious to me that Netflix's "Hillbilly Elegy" fails to communicate anything of real substance. In doing so, "Hillbilly Elegy" turned Vance into a household name by peddling his anecdotal accounts of welfare abuse or habitual unemployment to justify the idea that people are to blame for their own suffering. By following Vance's lead, Howard has turned a community's moral failings and human anguish into Oscar bait for those looking to find yet another reason to scoff at the working class.
