CNN —Australia and England will meet on Wednesday as each team looks to seal a historic Women’s World Cup final appearance. Neither side has ever qualified for a World Cup final before and in such an open tournament, both will have aspirations of going all the way. Australia vs. England begins at 6 a.m. And on Wednesday, the two will once again do battle, this time in the semifinal of the Women’s World Cup. This is first the time that Australia has contested a Women’s World Cup semifinal.

Since men were responsible for colonizing, I guess it’s only right that women are showing how to decolonize football at their World Cup. To that point, this World Cup has also showcased the magnificent talents of Haiti and Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz, the latter making it to the competition in part by raising money via a crowdfunder appeal. More than any other time in the history of the women’s game, this World Cup is showcasing why real and meaningful representation matters. Her stature is a huge win for Muslim women and girls who have never seen themselves represented in this way on football’s global stage. Still, the French state is forcing Muslim women to remove the hijab if they want to play the game they love.

CNN —Even as a 15-year-old, Sam Kerr had the weight of a nation on her shoulders. Fast forward to 2023 and Kerr is one of best players in the game and a global star. Kerr has had to wait longer than expected for the honor at this tournament having been forced to miss Australia’s opening two games because of injury. But a surprise defeat to Nigeria in the Matildas’ second group game have left their hopes hanging by a thread. Brisbane, Australia CNN —When Australia’s richest woman Gina Rinehart threw a financial lifeline to Netball Australia, she triggered a debate about sponsorships and the role of social and political issues in the sporting sphere. Donnell Wallam of the Firebirds is a rising star in Australian netball. On Monday, Kathryn Harby-Williams, CEO of the Australian Netball Players’ Association told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that Wallam had asked for an exemption not to wear the logo and was refused.
