Despite Aurora becoming a regular talking point at his rallies, a Trump campaign spokesperson declined to specify when or if the former president would visit the city. But Aurora has some important differences: It has a much larger population and has long been diverse. There has been crime, but it’s not clear how much of it is gang-related or directly attributed to increased migration. “They’re going in with guns that are beyond even military scope and they’re taking over apartment buildings,” Trump said Wednesday in North Carolina. Resources in Denver have been stretched thin — and migrants have sought housing in neighboring Aurora, where rent is cheaper.

China test-fired an ICBM this week, launching it into the Pacific Ocean for the first time in over 40 years. CNN —Thousands of Florida residents have been forced to evacuate as the state prepares for rapidly strengthening Tropical Storm Helene, which could bring powerful winds, flooding and life-threatening storm surge to areas already hard-hit by recent hurricanes. The Big Bend area faces the most serious storm surge: up to 15 feet of it is possible. Over in Sanibel, one couple who met during Hurricane Ian in 2022 and nearly lost everything are now going to weather Tropical Storm Helene together, CNN affiliate WINK reported. Large clouds move over Havana due to the proximity of the tropical storm Helene, on September 24. Officials in neighboring Pinellas County warned hundreds of homes would likely flood with a higher storm surge than in past destructive storms.

Anthony D’Esposito, one of the GOP’s most endangered House incumbents, reportedly gave both his lover and his fiancée’s daughter part-time jobs in his district office on Long Island, a potential violation of House ethics rules. Each of the efforts, in varying ways, faces obstacles. The nation’s top leader, Xi Jinping, will need close cooperation from border countries, some of which are politically volatile, like Kyrgyzstan, or internationally isolated, like North Korea. Neighboring countries that have long been wary of China, like Vietnam, will need to be reassured. But others have warned of Chinese domination of the Laotian economy. The new initiatives would also be expensive, and China has begun emphasizing smaller Belt and Road projects elsewhere.

An Israeli-designed radar system encircling the island can detect passersby, in low visibility, from half a mile away. Often described as "butlers with badges," the Indian Creek police force is unlike most of its counterparts. The Indian Creek radar can detect objects on the water and use artificial intelligence to classify them according to the risk they pose. With the new security system, the Indian Creek police appear to have turbocharged their enforcement of regulations in the surrounding waters. Properties in the neighborhood are also being bought up by opaquely named LLCs tied to Indian Creek residents.

When Vice President Kamala Harris took the reins of the Democratic nomination in late July, something happened in North Carolina. Part of the Harris campaign strategy in North Carolina, according to a campaign official, includes attempting to bulk up turnout not just among Black voters but among women in and around the suburbs. For the week after Harris became the presumptive nominee, there was a 61.5% increase in voter registration among North Carolina women. Bonier takes all of this to point to a higher turnout of Democratic voters in North Carolina. “The way you win statewide in North Carolina,” he said, “is you win on the margins.”

SRINAGAR, India — Voters lined up outside polling stations in India’s Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday to vote in the first provincial election being held in a decade in the Himalayan region that has grappled with years of militant violence. Jammu and Kashmir is India’s only Muslim-majority territory and has been at the center of a dispute with neighboring Pakistan since 1947. Until 2019, Indian-ruled Jammu and Kashmir had a special status of partial autonomy that was revoked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) government has said that revoking the region’s special status restored normalcy in the area and helped its development. The contest this time is between regional parties promising to restore the special status, India’s main opposition Congress party which has allied with a prominent regional group, as well as the BJP, which is pitching development and a permanent end to militancy.

CNN —United Nations members voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to demand that Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months. Fourteen countries voted against, including the United States, Hungary, Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Fiji, Malawi, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Tonga, and Tuvalu. In its advisory opinion, the ICJ said Israel should end its occupation “as rapidly as possible.” The UN’s resolution gives a 12-month timeline. During the 1967 war, Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Golan heights from neighboring Arab states. The Palestinians want the West Bank and Gaza for a future state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Kremlin said Tuesday that an order by President Vladimir Putin to transform Russia’s army into the second largest in the world was needed to address growing threats on Russia’s western borders and instability to the east. Putin on Monday ordered the regular size of the Russian army to be increased by 180,000 troops to 1.5 million active servicemen in a move that would make it the second largest in the world after China’s. “This is due to the number of threats that exist to our country along the perimeter of our borders,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call. Putin since 2022 had previously ordered two official increases in the number of combat troops — by 137,000 and 170,000 respectively. Dara Massicot, an expert in the Russian military at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace think tank, questioned whether Moscow was ready to foot the bill for the increase in active servicemen.

Zimbabwe plans to cull 200 elephants to feed communities facing acute hunger after the worst drought in four decades, wildlife authorities said on Tuesday. “We can confirm that we are planning to cull about 200 elephants across the country. We are working on modalities on how we are going to do it,” Tinashe Farawo, Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson, told Reuters. It follows neighboring Namibia’s decision last month to cull 83 elephants and distribute meat to people impacted by the drought. The numbers are just a drop in the ocean because we are talking of 200 (elephants) and we are sitting on plus 84,000, which is big,” he said.
