For more on House Republican primary infighting, watch “Inside Politics with Manu Raju” on Sunday at 8 a.m. Washington CNN —GOP Rep. Don Bacon has had it with the far-right of his conference. Now McCarthy allies in the House GOP Conference are considering giving a boost to Aaron Dimmock, the retired Navy officer facing off against Gaetz in the August 20 primary. And while the outcomes in most of these primary races won’t impact the GOP’s efforts to keep the majority, they will shape the makeup of the next House Republican Conference and how they pursue their agenda. Several of Gonzales' colleagues in the House are backing a GOP primary challenger in his race for reelection.

Jim Pillen's support of a bill that would change the state's system of allocating electoral votes from one determined by individual congressional districts to one that would award the state's five electoral votes to the statewide victor. Nebraska Democrats vehemently fought back against this electoral change before the legislative session ended earlier this month and the measure didn't advance. If Nebraska went through with its change, Trump would likely win the state's entire share of electoral votes, given its strong GOP orientation. But if Maine also switched to a winner-take-all system before the 2024 election, Biden would be heavily favored to win all of that state's electoral votes and would thus win the Electoral College (270 to 268). Maine Democrats — who control the state legislature — had generally not spoken of tweaking their electoral allocation system ahead of 2024.

As things stand now, 48 states are set to allocate their electors this November according to the winner of the popular vote in their state. There, electoral votes are partially divvied up on a proportional basis. In Maine, two of the state’s four electoral votes go to the winner of the popular vote, while the other two are split between its two congressional districts. Biden won that election with 306 electoral votes; the Nebraska elector did not make a difference. Which is why Nebraska Republicans have launched an effort, backed by Trump, to end its quasi-proportional allocation of electoral votes.

At schools across several states, boys have created and circulated nude deepfake images of their female classmates, according to The Times. This kind of broad public education would hopefully cause people to think twice about engaging with nude deepfakes at all through things like clicks, likes and shares. Watermarks on AI content can be easily removed, so it’s also important to prohibit the removal of such tags. Americans need to wake up to an important fact: Nude deepfakes destroy women’s lives. Our society needs to take this new form of violence against women and girls seriously.

Read previewFormer President Donald Trump is backing a last-minute change to Nebraska's election law that could deprive President Joe Biden of an Electoral College vote that would loom large in a close race. The rest of the state is heavily conservative and has consistently handed its four other electoral votes to Republican nominees. Republicans could make Biden's reelection path more difficult if they successfully changed the law. It's worth being skeptical that Republicans can push this throughNebraska Republicans have gnashed their teeth over the law for years. CNN —Former President Donald Trump and his allies have ramped up pressure for Nebraska lawmakers to change the method the state divvies out electoral college votes, an effort that underscores just how narrow the race for 270 electoral votes could be in the November rematch with President Joe Biden. Conservative activist Charlie Kirk kicked off the effort on Tuesday, sending a message on social media urging Nebraska Republicans to act. For weeks, the Biden campaign has had its eye on Omaha and its one electoral vote. For all the talk of Biden’s blue wall of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, winning all three could still leave him short of 270 electoral votes. The 2020 census changed the map based on decreasing populations in Pennsylvania and Michigan, so one of Nebraska’s three electoral votes could become critical should there be a 269-269 tie with Trump.

“Seeing as how President Trump endorsed Mike Bost, Matt always finds himself on the wrong side of history,” Miller told CNN. After the GOP leadership’s candidate, Craig Riedel, was caught on tape criticizing Trump, multiple Republicans pulled their endorsement, including Miller and House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik. And now, Miller is inserting herself into another incumbent primary race in Illinois: She also is backing Bailey over Bost, her House GOP colleague. But this time, Miller and Gaetz are on the opposite side of Trump in the race. “Darren Bailey proudly stands with President Trump despite disagreeing with him on this endorsement,” a campaign spokesman said.

(AP) — A Nebraska lawmaker who tanked an effort last year by his fellow Republicans to pass a near-total abortion ban has given top priority this year to a bill that would allow abortions beyond the state's 12-week ban in cases of fatal fetal anomalies. The bill by state Sen. Merv Riepe would amend Nebraska’s 12-week abortion ban, passed last year, to allow abortions in cases when a fetus is unable to survive outside the womb. The diagnosis and abortion must come before 20 weeks of pregnancy — a timeline consistent with Nebraska's previous 20-week ban on abortions. In Nebraska, advocates are trying to collect about 125,000 signatures needed by July 5 to put a constitutional amendment before voters to protect abortion rights until fetal viability. On the national stage, Democrats see the issue of abortion rights as a major driver in a presidential election year.

At least two Republican lawmakers are still undecided on impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. AdvertisementHouse Republicans took more than 14 hours to ram through impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas through committee approval. Just after 1 am Wednesday morning, the House Homeland Security Committee approved two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas on an 18 to 15 party-line vote. Johnson and House leadership must grapple with at least two publicly undecided Republican lawmakers in Reps. Ken Buck of Colorado and Tom McClintock of California. In recent days, Comer has said in media appearances that subpoenas for Biden family members are “imminent.”The end of the inquiry is still likely months away. They did, however, secure an interview with the special counsel overseeing the Hunter Biden criminal probe, David Weiss, for Tuesday, which is unprecedented given that the case is ongoing. At every turn, House Democrats and the White House have dismissed the allegations against the president and poked holes in the Republican-led investigation. “The subpoenas to Hunter Biden and other members of the Biden family should have already happened,” Gaetz told CNN. “We’ll see what comes out.”Even members involved in the inquiry know that the evidence doesn’t clear the key hurdles needed to move forward.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New House Speaker Mike Johnson inherits many of the same problems that bedeviled Republican leaders with far more experience. But can he unite House Republicans where others failed? Trump, who is running for a second White House term, enthusiastically backed Johnson and said he will be “a fantastic speaker." The House Republican Conference is deeply divided on those issues. The intractability of many House Republicans forced McCarthy to turn to Democrats for help in keeping the government running.

Rep. Matt Gaetz's GOP colleagues are so tired of his antics that they made him stand with Democrats, The Washington Post reported. Gaetz stood on the Democratic side of the floor Tuesday as he called for Kevin McCarthy's ouster as House speaker. Gaetz made no secret of his disapproval of McCarthy and triggered a historic vote this week that resulted in McCarthy's removal. AdvertisementAdvertisementRep. “I do intend to file a motion to vacate against Speaker McCarthy this week. But now, knowing full well he’s likely to soon face a so-called motion to vacate vote, McCarthy is taking his detractors head-on – and in increasingly combative terms. If the Senate bill advanced, McCarthy would have a harder time arguing his bill was the solution. 3 Senate Republican, opposed the Senate bill, breaking with McConnell, according to a source familiar with the matter. More broadly, it could raise fresh doubts about the capacity of a polarized nation – featuring an ever more extreme and performative Republican Party in ex-President Donald Trump’s image – to govern itself. But the Republican majority is so thin – the speaker can lose only four votes with its current margin – and the party is so bitterly divided, that past experience may be a poor predictor of outcomes. So handing a win to the critical Republicans on whom the GOP majority depends may be a poor strategy. Rep. Ben Sasse told The New York Times that professors shouldn't feel stifled by a new Florida law. "You want to actually be teaching debates that allow people to get inside texts and wrestle," he said. Sasse, a former Nebraska senator, took over the reigns of the University of Florida earlier this year. In July, SB 266, which mandates that professors cannot "distort" historical events, became Florida law. "There's nothing that's going to keep a University of Florida professor from teaching that," he told the newspaper.

House Republicans view it as almost certain that they will move forward with impeaching Biden this fall. But in actuality, House Republicans think it's likely they'll later impeach Biden. A vote to authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden is not a direct vote on impeachment, but it would make a major escalation in House Republicans' probes of Biden. "Once the barn doors are open, so to speak, the horses are out," an unnamed senior House Republican told CNN. Of particular note are the 18 Republicans who represent congressional districts won by President Joe Biden in 2020.

Crop Watch corn and soybean fields were stressed last week under mostly dry conditions, but multiple rounds of rain over the weekend prevented yield expectations from declining. Last week’s Crop Watch rain totals were mostly concentrated over the weekend, though not all areas received the needed soaking. More than 3 inches of rain were observed in South Dakota, Nebraska, western Iowa and western Illinois, and Indiana picked up 2 inches. For example, the western Iowa producer this week described his beans as phenomenal while the Ohio field was said to look incredible. Most importantly for Trump and the House Republicans doing his bidding, it could distract from the legal storm around the former president. After only one presidential impeachment in the first two centuries of US history, Biden’s would be the fourth impeachment in around 25 years if House Republicans follow through. The document contained no proof of the allegations or any evidence Biden took part in his son’s work for the firm. McCarthy had for months deflected calls for the impeachment of Biden from the most radical members of his conference. McCarthy insisted on Tuesday that he was only contemplating an impeachment inquiry – rather than a full-scale drive to an impeachment vote – in the House.

The US began ramping up ammunition production last year when it became clear that the war would drag on far longer than anticipated. But the ammunition will still take “years” to mass produce to acceptable levels, National Security adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN Sunday. Ukrainian troops now typically fire between 2,000 and 3,000 artillery shells per day at Russian forces, a US defense official told CNN. It was necessary, though, because of how low US stockpiles are, Sullivan told CNN Sunday. “All of us have had to struggle stimulating our supply chains, some of which went to sleep,” he told CNN.
