(Reuters) - With President Joe Biden pledging to jump-start a vaccination rollout that he has denounced as a dismal failure so far, West Virginia is touting the relative success of its program to inoculate most of its nearly 2 million residents. Of 38 million vaccine doses distributed by the federal government so far, 46% had been administered as of Thursday, CDC data showed. West Virginia opted out of a distribution partnership between the federal government and the CVS and Walgreens national pharmacy chains to inoculate residents of long-term care facilities and nursing homes. State officials in West Virginia say they are proud to have vaccinated about 9.3% of residents so far, second only to Alaska at around 9.8%. West Virginia and North Dakota lead in terms of available vaccine administered, both states having injected 72% of their allocated doses into residents’ arms.

NUEVO TEAPA, Mexico (Reuters) - Nearly 130 migrants from Central America were discovered in the back of a shipping truck in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz on Thursday after officials heard pounding and screams for help, Mexico’s National Guard said. After hearing cries for help, officials opened the back of the vehicle to find 128 men, women and children crowded in “inhuman conditions” that were inadequate to prevent the spread of COVID-19, according to the statement. A Reuters witness who spoke with the migrants traveling on the truck in Veracruz said they were not part of the caravan. Guatemalan security officials, after some clashes with a large group of migrants camped on a highway, returned thousands of people back to Honduras and El Salvador on buses this week. Some migrants from the caravan said they fled security forces and fanned out into the mountains of Guatemala.

Insider senior correspondent Dave Levinthal scored an official press pass to cover President Joe Biden's inauguration live at the US Capitol. Getting the final green light to attend the ceremony required a negative COVID-19 test and navigating plenty of tight security. It began with President Donald Trump still spewing lies and refusing to accept the outcome of a free and fair election he lost. As a reporter assigned to cover Biden's inauguration ceremony, the short and turbulent path to a literal front-row seat to history provided a poignant and personal metaphor — one both of fear and of hope.
