CNN —A 70-year-old man was killed by a cow moose after he tried to take photos of the animal and its newborn calves near his home in southern Alaska on Sunday, authorities said. The man, Dale Chorman, was with a friend when the pair spotted a female moose and her two newborn calves in the city of Homer, the Alaska Department of Public Safety said. “Dale was with another adult male and they were attempting to take photos of two newborn moose calves when the cow moose attacked Dale,” agency spokesperson Austin McDaniel told CNN in an email Tuesday. While in the company of her calves, a female moose will not hesitate to attack should a person come near them, McDaniel said. “Cow moose with calves are known to be relentless in their efforts to defend their calves from perceived threats,” McDaniel said.

In Search of Spring

When does spring begin? For some, it’s the second Sunday in March, when we turn our clocks forward by an hour in the United States. It’s only a three-hour flight from La Guardia (rainy, cold) to West Palm Beach (sunny, 81 degrees, slight breeze), and from there an hour’s drive to Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, the spring training home of the New York Mets. Here in Port St. Lucie on a Tuesday afternoon, weeks before the season’s official start, cheery fans were decked out in team merch, drinking Modelo Especial tallboys and snacking on peanuts, reeling off stats, heckling the players. Here, spring was already happening.

Hong Kong CNN —A restaurant in China that challenged its customers to eat more than 100 dumplings in return for a free meal has fallen foul of authorities, who are investigating whether it has violated the country’s anti-food waste law. The challenge reportedly involved patrons competing to eat 108 chaoshous, or spicy wonton dumplings, as quickly as possible to win a free meal and additional prizes. The Cover said the restaurant, which it did not name, was one of several being probed by the authorities over similar competitions. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has in the past called food waste “shocking and distressing” and in March this year said agricultural supplies were like the foundation of national security. Will the food not consumed there actually go to the poor?” wrote one user on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter.

For most of America, the Fourth of July evokes thoughts of fireworks, family and cookouts. But hours before any of those things begin in earnest, many Americans will turn their attention to a curious spectacle that has become another holiday tradition: the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. The definition of humanly possible has one meaning for most of the meat-eating world; it has quite another for most of the contestants. That is especially true for the defending champions, Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo, who were back to defend their titles and possibly expand the notion of what is humanly possible. Chestnut holds the men’s world record of 76 hot dogs and buns eaten in 10 minutes in 2021, while Ms. Sudo holds the women’s world record of 48.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

The Long Shadow of Covid School Closures
  + stars: | 2023-04-28 | by ( David Leonhardt | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
During the early months of the Covid pandemic, Randi Weingarten and the teachers’ union she leads faced a vexing question: When should schools reopen? For years, advocates of public education like Weingarten had argued that schools played an irreplaceable role. Without public schools, their defenders argued, society would come apart. Teachers and parents feared that reopening schools before vaccines were available would spark Covid outbreaks, illness and death. Instead, Covid became an opportunity for her union, the American Federation of Teachers, to push for broader policy changes that it had long favored.
And what’s a party without great sound? SEE ALL Consumer Reports product reviewsTailgate speakers tend to be bulky and heavy, so they might not be ideal for a leisurely stroll about town. These standout speakers have been tested in Consumer Reports dedicated sound lab. But the XG300 is actually one of the better-sounding portable speakers we’ve tested, with bass that’s got a decent amount of sock and a clear, even midrange. By contrast, the bigger and more expensive XG500 fell short of its smaller sibling with bass that’s kind of boomy while that all-important midrange is muffled.
