Hezbollah has lost contact with Safieddine since the strike, a Lebanese security source told CNN on Saturday. Just like Nasrallah, Safieddine is a staunch critic of Israel and the West, with deep alliances with the Iranian leadership. The executive council is one of five bodies that make up the Shura Council, which is the organization’s decision-making body. The executive council oversees political matters, as opposed to the Jihad Council which is the group’s military body, which Safieddine is a member of. The United States designated Hezbollah a foreign terrorist organization in 1997, and in 2017 designated Safieddine a foreign terrorist.

It will take a remarkable amount of efficiency and discipline from the Israeli military and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to know when it is time to stop. The Israeli military are now walking into the ground trap that their adversary has been setting for them for well over a decade. And so, knowing when to stop is going to be key to this not becoming a quagmire for Israel. Does Israel’s Lebanon operation increase the chances of wider war with Iran? For Israel’s military endeavor to last weeks and not months, they will need extraordinary and rare success, discipline, and political wisdom.

Israel meanwhile fired nearly 300 projectiles into southern Lebanon on Saturday in what the military said was pre-emptive action against a planned Hezbollah attack. Israel continued its strikes into Sunday, with Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) reporting two people were killed Sunday morning in southern Lebanon. Speaking on Sunday, Netanyahu again put the focus on ensuring the return of Israel citizens to their homes in northern Israel and to restore security in that region.
