Wall Street will be keeping close watch on what Nvidia says about demand for its artificial intelligence chips when the market-moving chipmaker reports quarterly results after the bell Wednesday. Nvidia is expected to surpass expectations again, with analysts polled by LSEG calling for earnings of $5.59 per share on $24.65 billion in revenue. "As long as it tops analyst expectations, NVIDIA is likely to remain a key tailwind for the overall U.S. stock market." NVDA 1Y mountain Shares over the last year For multiple quarters, Nvidia has shocked Wall Street with the robust demand for its tools. "We continue to expect a strong beat-and-raise quarter from NVIDIA as Hopper demand remains robust before the Blackwell transition," wrote Morgan Stanley's Joseph Moore.

Nvidia's Hopper chips include the H100, which was announced in 2022 and faced severe supply shortages last year as the AI gold rush intensified. Tuesday's AWS news represents a pushout in demand for Nvidia chips, not a loss of it. That would be the so-called "digestion" phase for AI chips that Wall Street has been speculating about since last year. If anything, AWS deciding to wait for the more-powerful Blackwell chips could mean the digestion phase is further out on the horizon than initially thought. Unlike last year, when Nvidia's chips were in such short supply, there are now rival chips out there, such as AMD's MI300X, which is angling for a corner of the inferencing market .

Nvidia, which makes microchips that power most artificial intelligence applications, began an extraordinary run a year ago. Fueled by an explosion of interest in A.I., the Silicon Valley company said last May that it expected its chip sales to go through the roof. They did — and the fervor didn’t stop, with Nvidia raising its revenue projections every few months. Its stock soared, driving the company to a more than $2 trillion market capitalization that makes it more valuable than Alphabet, the parent of Google. On Wednesday, Nvidia again reported soaring revenue and profits that underscored how it remains a dominant winner of the A.I.

Nvidia announced a 10-for-1 forward stock split in its fiscal first-quarter earnings report on Wednesday. Stock splits do nothing to change the financial fundamentals of a company but they so make each share cheaper, which can have a positive psychological effect on retail investors. Nvidia said the stock split will make ownership "more accessible to employees and investors," the release said. Nvidia shares closed on Wednesday at $949.50. Alphabet , Amazon and Tesla all orchestrated stock splits in 2022.

CNN —Nvidia announced a 10-for-1 stock split on Wednesday, making buying shares in the red-hot semiconductor company more accessible for individual investors. Five years ago, an investor could have purchased Nvidia stock for less than $50 a share. Nvidia’s (NVDA) announcement, which came in its quarterly earnings report, means that each common share will be split into 10 smaller shares, effectively cutting the price of investing in the company. Nvidia shares rose as much as 4% in after-hours trading following the report. Still, some investors had raised questions ahead of Wednesday’s report about just how long Nvidia could keep the rally going.

All eyes on NvidiaDespite concerns about stubbornly high inflation, elevated interest rates and ballooning U.S. debt, the S&P 500 is trading at a record on Wednesday, having soared 27 percent over the past year. Among the factors driving the rally, few are bigger than the boom in stocks tied to artificial intelligence — and the biggest of all of those is Nvidia. Investors have high hopes for Nvidia’s earnings on Wednesday. Expect a torrent of trading when the chip maker reports results for its fiscal first quarter after market close. A year ago, Nvidia’s stock jumped more than 24 percent after it posted knockout earnings.

Nvidia has been the biggest story of Wall Street's rally to record highs, but the options market appears to be underestimating the impact of its earnings report Wednesday, according to Goldman Sachs. "NVDA options suggest investors expect this earnings report to be unusually important; NVDA options imply a +/-11.9% earnings-day move vs. its 4-quarter historical earnings-day move of +/-10.8%. The importance of this earnings report is easy to see given NVDA options volume has been 36% of all single stock options volumes over the past three months," the note said. The S & P 500 is a market cap-weighted index, meaning that Nvidia has taken on extra importance over the past two years. The options market has underpriced S & P 500 moves following the previous four Nvidia reports as well, according to Goldman.

Jensen Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer of Nvidia Corp., during the Nvidia GPU Technology Conference (GTC) in San Jose, California, US, on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. Nvidia's most important clients for its graphics processing units are the big cloud providers — Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud. For example, CoreWeave, a GPU cloud, is currently quoting $4.25 per hour to rent an Nvidia H100. Huang said Meta has declared its intention to spend billions on 350,000 Nvidia chips, even though the company isn't a cloud provider. Meta's cluster of servers is an example of "essential infrastructure for AI production," Huang said, or, "what we refer to as AI factories."

In what was the most anticipated quarter this earnings season, Nvidia far outpaced lofty expectations on the top and bottom lines. Adjusted gross margin of 78.9% also beat the Street's 77.2% estimate, according to market data platform FactSet. Through its Nvidia AI Enterprise service, Nvidia is in the process of building out a potentially massive software business. Nvidia said Tesla's use of Nvidia AI infrastructure "paved the way" for the "breakthrough performance" of full self-driving version 12. Kress expects sovereign AI revenue to approach the high single-digit billions of dollars this year from nothing last year.
