KFC recently introduced a value menu with meals starting at $4.99. But it’s been a long time since they used discounted meals as a strategy to drive traffic, noted Peter Saleh, restaurant analyst at BTIG. KFC launched its value menu earlier that month. A Burger King spokesperson confirmed to CNN that it plans to offer a $5 meal, without sharing more details. And more deals don’t mean that menu prices are dropping, or even staying the same.

New York CNN —McDonald’s has a message for America: Rumors of Big Mac inflation are greatly exaggerated. “The average price of a Big Mac in the U.S. was $4.39 in 2019,” he said. That’s an increase of 21% (not 100%).”What Erlinger wants customers to know is not that high-priced McDonald’s burgers don’t exist at all. Erlinger is fighting back because McDonald’s pricey burgers have become something of a symbol of elevated fast food prices. “It’s imperative that we continue to keep affordability at the forefront for our customers,” McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said during an April 30 analyst call.

CNN —Families of seven female Israeli soldiers captured by Hamas during the October 7 attacks have released graphic footage of their abduction as they pile pressure on the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to secure their release. The video shows the women — all Israel Defense Forces (IDF) personnel — lined up against a wall, their hands bound. The footage was previously released by Hamas, according to the Hostages Families Forum. The campaigning group obtained it from the IDF, which had previously edited the video to exclude the most disturbing scenes. Efforts to reach a deal that would pause the war in Gaza and allow the release of hostages have repeatedly been dashed.

"The fact remains that in order to provide the consumer with more affordable options, they must be affordable for the owner/operators. McDonald's vast resources and financial investment are essential to any sustainable affordable strategy," the board of the National Owners Association wrote in a letter to membership. McDonald's declined to comment on the NOA letter to its membership. In a statement to CNBC last week on the value meal the company said, "We know how much it means to our customers when McDonald's offers meaningful value and communicates it through national advertising. These ideas were initially floated by the advocacy group earlier in the year, as it pushed to add affordable options to the menu without discounting "core and iconic" items.

Relatives of Israeli hostages being held by Hamas at a rally near the International Criminal Court at The Hague on Wednesday. The hostage families, numbering about 100 people and accompanied by two former hostages who were released in November, said they had come to try to make sure that justice would be done. “It’s important to use the international tools that are more often used against Israel,” he added, of the effort to seek international justice. The Israeli government does not recognize the court’s jurisdiction and is not a signatory to its founding treaty. Their mother mostly stays home surrounded by friends, they said, and their father prays much of the time while they “do the journeys.”

These families argue that the price to be paid in any hostage deal — the release of large numbers of Palestinian militants held by Israel — would endanger the country in the future. Protests calling on the government to reach a deal with Hamas have grown in size and intensity as the crisis has dragged on. The Mor family and two other hostages' families founded the Tikva Forum, a loosely organized group whose public members are mostly religious and right-wing. They share the belief that military pressure, not an immediate cease-fire or hostage release deal, is the best way to bring their loved ones home. “We see that when there’s a deal, hostages return, and in between, when there isn’t, only bodies come back,” said Berman.

China called for a large-scale and authoritative peace conference on the war in Gaza, while the militant group Hamas aired video of three Israeli hostages and said their fate would be disclosed on Monday. Hamas aired video on Sunday showing three Israeli hostages it is holding in Gaza and urged the Israeli government to stop the offensive against the Palestinian Islamist group and bring about their release. Of some 240 people seized by Hamas in a cross-border killing spree that sparked the war, around half were released in a November truce. Israel says 132 remain in Gaza and that 25 of them have died in captivity. Hamas said on Monday that two of the hostages captured on Oct. 7 had been killed in Israeli airstrikes and released images that appeared to show their bodies, but the Israeli military cast doubt on the claim. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, chief spokesman for the Israeli military, said at a press briefing that at least one of the hostages was not killed by its forces. At the same time, the videos appeared to demonstrate the leverage which Hamas can exert on Israeli society through the hostages. Previous videos released by Hamas about the hostages have omitted or distorted crucial details. She said that Hamas fighters dug her and Mr. Svirsky out but that Mr. Sharabi had been killed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The last Omer Neutra's parents heard from him, he told them reassuringly that he anticipated a quiet weekend. They would later learn that their son, a dual Israeli-U.S. citizen, had been ambushed and pulled out of his tank. He was taken to Gaza, where he is believed to remain as a hostage more than 50 days later. The Israeli military said Wednesday that Hamas had begun releasing 12 hostages from captivity in Gaza, the sixth release of Israeli hostages under the cease-fire agreement. Several days later, two police officers knocked on their door to tell them that their son had been abducted by Hamas and was in Gaza.

The Israeli Prime Minister's office confirmed that 17 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza were released on Sunday, including four-year-old Israeli-American Abigail Mor Edan. The Prime Minister's office said that 14 of the individuals were Israeli citizens, while the other three were foreign nationals. Fifty Hamas hostages are due to be freed over the four days under the terms of an agreement between Israel and Hamas. In the first two days of the temporary cease-fire, 24 hostages were released from Gaza in exchange for 39 Palestinian prisoners. There is a clause within the current Israel-Hamas agreement that would extend the military pause if Hamas agrees to release additional hostages beyond the initial 50.

According to Israeli media and the Israeli government, up to 40 hostages being held are children, including a 10-month-old baby and preschoolers. The Israeli military said earlier this month that it recovered the bodies of two hostages in Gaza City, including 19-year-old soldier Noa Marciano. The Israeli military has said it found evidence that some hostages were held at or under hospitals. The military released video that it said also showed militants forcing two hostages into Shifa hospital on Oct. 7. Hamas released another video in October that showed three women hostages denouncing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The IDF mistakenly hit Nova festival attendees while aiming for Hamas militants, Haaretz reports. 364 people were killed at the psychedelic trance music festival near the Gaza border. AdvertisementA police investigation of the Nova music festival massacre on October 7 indicates that the IDF mistakenly shot some festival attendees while firing at Hamas terrorists. The source told Haaretz that their police investigation intimates that an IDF combat helicopter fired at terrorists after arriving on the scene. Israeli security's assessment is that Hamas did not have advance knowledge of the Nova music festival next to Kibbutz Re'im, and targeted it spontaneously after infiltrating Gaza's border, Haaretz reports.
