But retirees and full-time caregivers have been unable to take advantage of a strong job market. Now, consumers are largely left with the same buying power they had four years ago rather than having seen real income gains over that time that would have helped bolster their financial picture. The outlook for the job market also varies by race with the unemployment rate at 5.6% for Black workers and 5% for Hispanic workers. Food prices have risen around 25% over the past four years while Biden was in office. The rise in food prices has disproportionately impacted lower-income households, which spend around a third of their discretionary income on food, according to a 2022 Agriculture Department survey.

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gestures during a campaign event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S., June 22, 2024. Former President Donald Trump could announce his vice presidential pick as early as this week, possibly ahead of Thursday's debate, according to four people familiar with the situation. That gives him a limited window in which to introduce his running mate to the public. Trump's official spokespeople have regularly tamped down speculation about the timing of an announcement and the identity of Trump's running mate, and they did so again Tuesday. He ignored a follow-up question about whether he has talked with Trump about the VP job this week.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. attends a press conference in the Brooklyn borough of New York, on May 1, 2024. Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. failed to qualify for the first presidential debate hosted by CNN next week, officially setting up a one-on-one clash between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Last month, Kennedy's campaign filed a Federal Election Commission complaint against CNN and the Biden and Trump campaigns, alleging the way they set up the June 27 presidential debate was illegal. Kennedy still has a chance to qualify for the Sept. 10 debate, hosted by ABC News. That debate has the same ballot access and polling criteria as CNN's, although it's unclear when the polling window will open.

The Biden administration is taking executive action to protect undocumented spouses of American citizens — a move that would shield about 500,000 immigrants from deportation. The White House announced the election-year policy Tuesday, framing it as "new action to keep families together." Lawmakers have been briefed on the plan and at least some have been invited to the White House for the announcement, sources said. The program would also make it easier for some undocumented immigrants to get a green card and a path to U.S. citizenship. Sources also say that the undocumented spouses would be allowed to obtain work permits on a case-by-case basis.

The biggest divide in our politics isn’t between Democrats and Republicans, or even left and right. It’s between people who follow politics closely, and those who pay almost no attention to it. If you’re in the former camp — and if you’re reading this, you probably are — the latter camp can seem inscrutable. As the 2024 election takes shape, this bloc appears crucial to determining who wins the presidency. An NBC News poll from April found that 15 percent of voters don’t follow political news, and Donald Trump was winning them by 26 points.

Smoke and flame rise after Hezbollah carried out a missile attack on Safed city, northern Israel on June 12, 2024. Over the past week, Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has ramped up hostilities and cross-border missile attacks against targets in northern Israel, according to Israel Defense Forces and the Hezbollah-aligned al-Manar news outlet. It comes amid a ramp-up in attacks by Hezbollah in recent weeks following repeat offensives against its neighbor since October. "Hezbollah's increasing aggression is bringing us to the brink of what could be a wider escalation, one that could have devastating consequences for Lebanon and the entire region," Hagari added. CNN —With less than two weeks until the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle, CNN has released additional details on the parameters agreed upon by the Trump and Biden campaigns. Both candidates agreed to appear at a uniform podium, and their podium positions will be determined by a coin flip. In order to meet CNN’s qualifications for the debate, candidates must satisfy the requirements outlined in Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution to serve as president. Both Biden and Trump meet those requirements, as do Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West and Jill Stein, who are running on non-major-party tickets. Though not impossible in Kennedy’s case, it is less likely that candidates other than Biden and Trump will meet those requirements.

John Della Volpe, who has been doing intensive research on young voters, said older voters have embraced Biden's policies, such as lowering the cost of prescription drugs, whereas younger voters don't feel similar benefits from them. Rep. Ann McLane Kuster, D-N.H., said older voters in her state and elsewhere are attracted to Biden's "steady hand." At the same time, Biden had a narrow lead among voters 65 and older, according to the poll. While Trump won voters 65 and older in the 2016 election by 7 percentage points, Biden narrowed that gap to 5 points in 2020. The Biden campaign hopes to maintain his apparent momentum among older voters in part by contrasting Biden's proposals for seniors with Trump's policies.

Defense attorneys on Tuesday scrutinized the credibility of the star witness in the federal corruption trial of Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., after he testified that he bribed the embattled lawmaker and his wife. The witness, Jose Uribe, was one of three New Jersey businessmen who were originally charged in the case along with Menendez and his wife, Nadine Menendez. "That was my promise to her so she could get the car and comply with the deal," Uribe testified Monday. Eyad Baba | Afp | Getty ImagesThe United Nations Security Council passed a U.S.-drafted cease-fire deal aimed at halting eight months of bloody fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. In March, China and Russia vetoed a Gaza cease-fire resolution, saying it would give Israel a green light to attack the city of Rafah. "Israel has accepted this proposal and the Security Council has an opportunity to speak with one voice and call on Hamas to do the same," he said. Hamas, on the other hand, said in a statement, in part, that it "welcomes what was included in and confirmed by the Security Council resolution regarding a permanent ceasefire in Gaza." Right around the time the Security Council began voting Monday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken landed in Israel to, among other things, meet with retired Gen. Benny Gantz.

Former President Donald Trump has spent years attacking Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden's only surviving son, and raising campaign cash on his unfounded claims that the Biden family is corrupt and above the law. Long before Hunter Biden was found guilty Tuesday of three federal gun crimes, Trump made the 54-year-old lawyer and recovering drug addict the centerpiece of his bare-knuckle campaign against Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential election.
