“NAFO” stands for the North Atlantic Fellas Organization and is a decentralized online volunteer organization that is waging its own social media war against Russia and its invasion of Ukraine. Over the weekend, the group held its own summit in Lithuania’s capital, which was opened by the country’s foreign minister. A cartoon Shiba Inu, wearing the blue and yellow colors of Ukraine's flag, pops up behind Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas in a video she shared on Twitter. Some fellas are Ukrainian soldiers, who are fighting on the front lines and provide pictures from the battlefield, mocking the incompetence of the Russian military or praising Ukrainian bravery. After identifying Russian propaganda or pro-Russian sympathizers, fellas pile on their posts with memes, humor, wry logic, and dismissive comments.

A US supporter of Ukraine proposed to his girlfriend with a message on a Ukrainian artillery shell. They used a Ukrainian service that offers customized notes on munitions in exchange for a donation. "When we first started dating, I made an offhand comment one night," 38-year-old Emily Knight told Insider. A few months later that's more or less what her partner David did, using a then-burgeoning Ukrainian service known as SignMyRocket that the couple had been browsing. Her mother, who was ready to foot the bill for a white wedding, has been told to send the equivalent cash to Ukraine, Emily said.
Ukraine has received more than 1 million tons of military equipment from NATO countries, including tanks, howitzers and ammunition. It has also received tons of support from NAFO in the form of sarcasm, ridicule and fundraising. NAFO—the North Atlantic Fella Organization—has no relationship with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, other than playing on its name. It is an ad hoc collection of cybernauts, amateur artists and donors. They post on social media to back Ukraine and channel contributions to causes that buy equipment for soldiers, like the Georgian Legion of volunteers, or support humanitarian-aid campaigns like the Saint Javelin website.
