By Stephanie van den BergTHE HAGUE (Reuters) - A record 52 states will present arguments about the legal consequences of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the U.N.'s highest legal body. The ICJ's six days of hearings starting on Monday come after the U.N. General Assembly asked the court in 2022 for an advisory, or non-binding, opinion on the occupation. It is the second time the U.N. General Assembly has asked the ICJ, also known as the World Court, for an advisory opinion related to the occupied Palestinian territory. “The International Court of Justice is set for the first time to broadly consider the legal consequences of Israel’s nearly six-decades-long occupation and mistreatment of the Palestinian people,” said Clive Baldwin, senior legal adviser at Human Rights Watch. While Israel has filed a written statement with the court, it has not asked to participate in the hearings.

But House Republicans under Speaker Mike Johnson have no plans to take up the deal, effectively blocking the $60 billion in Ukraine aid it includes. AdvertisementThe war has reached a stalemate even with this support, and a sudden shortage as could come this year drastically weakens Ukraine’s war effort against Russia, analysts told Business Insider. Without US arms support, Ukraine will simply be outgunned and more of its troops will die, experts warn. UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia accused the United States on Monday of aggression against Iraq and Syria aimed at preserving its global dominance and salvaging the Biden administration’s “image” ahead of U.S. elections. Many council members expressed fears of a growing Mideast conflict and urged de-escalation and stepped-up peace efforts. Attacks on ships in the Red Sea are delivering another shock to global trade, coming on top of pandemic-related logjams at ports and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The normal route — three weeks via the Suez Canal — has been shut down by the Houthi attacks. Chief executive Stuart Machin said the Red Sea trouble was "impacting everyone and something we're very focused on." A new one-page indictment delivered by the grand jury Friday alleges Baldwin caused Hutchins' death — either by negligence or “total disregard or indifference” for safety. Defense attorneys for Baldwin indicate they'll fight the charge, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to 18 months. The indictment provides prosecutors with two alternative standards for the felony involuntary manslaughter charge against Baldwin. Mangels said a grand jury indictment is by no means an assurance that prosecutors will prevail at trial. “Just getting an indictment from a grand jury in no way means the prosecution has a slam dunk case or even a strong case,” she said.

Dollar gains on yen, bitcoin edges up before expected SEC decision

The SEC was expected to announce later in the day whether it will approve applications from asset managers Ark Investments and 21Shares (ABTC.S) to launch a spot bitcoin ETF. More than a dozen bitcoin ETF applications - including from BlackRock (BLK.N), Fidelity and VanEck - are also pending with the agency. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) due out on Thursday is the next likely driver of dollar direction. It is expected to show that headline inflation rose 0.2% in the month and by 3.2% on an annual basis. Anticipation of a positive SEC decision on ETFs, which is likely to draw billions of dollars in new investments, has boosted bitcoin prices in the past two months.

Though aerospace and defense funds understandably haven't done well in this year's faltering market, some individual stocks have posted substantial gains. U.S. support in what's turning out to be a long war in Ukraine will likely push overall contractor spending higher, benefitting aerospace and defense companies. In this era of high-tech warfare, when strategic military engagement is more about digital systems and aerial weapons than boots on the ground, aerospace and defense companies are advantageously positioned. Las Vegas hospitality unions ratify contract with Wynn Resorts
  + stars: | 2023-11-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Nov 22 (Reuters) - Unions representing hospitality staff in Las Vegas said on Wednesday that workers employed at Wynn Resorts (WYNN.O) have voted in favor to ratify a new five-year contract, days after similar moves by its competitors Caesars Entertainment (CZR.O) and MGM Resorts International (MGM.N). The unions, which represent about 5,000 employees at Wynn Resorts properties, said 99% of its members voted in favor of the new agreement. Earlier this week, union members at Caesars and MGM voted to ratify their contracts. The total compensation won by the Culinary Union for workers employed at MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts casino properties is about $2 billion over the five-year contract, according to Ted Pappageorge, secretary-treasurer at Culinary Union . Meanwhile, the unions said separate negotiations for 10,000 workers including cooks, bartenders and housekeepers, are ongoing with 24 smaller casinos and resorts for a new five-year contract.

Neither floods nor fires are new to Greece but with climate change, they are becoming a frequent disruptor to an economy dependent on tourism and farming. Mitsotakis has urged the EU to top up its solidarity fund and help countries tackle the impact of climate change. U.S. two-year Treasury yields skidded below 4.80% on Friday for the first time since September 1, with 10-year yields dropping under 4.40% to September lows too. Crude has now lost almost 25% in just six weeks - aided by the U.S. gradually lifting oil sanctions on Venezuela. The Labor Department said import prices fell a whopping 0.8% in October, the most in seven months amid a broad decline in the costs of goods - deepening the annual deflation of import prices to as much as 2.0%. Even though the dollar (.DXY), , is taking a hit from the plunge in U.S. Treasury yields, the drop in sovereign borrowing rates was mirrored across the world in Europe , even Japan . The stockpile continues to grow, the reports say, even though Iran has consistently denied wanting nuclear arms. "The political debate is really not going to be about negotiating with Iran, it's going to be about confronting Iran," he said. This week's IAEA reports showed Iran was making steady nuclear progress and indicated that Tehran continued to stonewall the agency in monitoring its work. Two diplomats said all that could be done in coming months was to support IAEA chief Rafael Grossi's efforts to strengthen oversight of Iran's nuclear programme. LONGER LEAD TIMESLarge-scale battery projects to store energy on grids and to smooth out the variance of wind and solar power are also seeing longer lead times. They are taking around 12 to 18 months to complete, around six months longer than they would take without the supply issues, said Andrew Waranch, chief executive of battery energy storage system developer Spearmint Energy. Utility AES Corp (AES.N) has stockpiled supplies of the equipment it needs to build battery storage projects through 2025, a company spokesperson said. A shortage of raw materials that has contributed to transformer supply delays is unlikely to ease soon, manufacturers said. The supply-demand dislocation has worsened with the rapid scale-up of wind, solar and storage projects.
