It used to be that inauguration was the cash cow for the Washington hotel industry. But at hotels that wavered about closing, workers — especially ones who served guests who visited Washington during the capitol riot — expressed concerns. In another area hotel, hotel workers faced similar challenges with guests who refused to wear masks and practice social distancing. “It was definitely scary,” said Emma Bowers, a manager at a Washington area hotel who did not provide the specific hotel name because she was not authorized to speak by her employer. She worked the 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. shift on the day before the Capitol riot began.

Now the National Mall is closed to the public due to threats of violence from groups who attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. “It’s like a ghost town but with soldiers,” said Dana O’Connor, who walked with her husband past concrete barriers near the White House on Sunday. Presidential inaugurations are normally high-security events, with metal detectors at key entry points, restricted ID-only zones and National Guard supplementing local and federal law enforcement. “The world will see Biden sworn in, in the middle of a military camp that’s indistinguishable from the Green Zone,” Sabato said, referring to the fortress-like area of central Baghdad set up after the Iraq War. Amy Littleton, a 30-year-old political consultant who lives about 10 blocks north of the White House, said “it just feels really unfair” to be excluded from Biden’s inauguration.

Inauguration Day 2021 will be like no other amid the coronavirus pandemic and looming threats following the deadly insurrection that took place two weeks earlier. DC is preparing for a scaled-back event — which includes a seven-foot, non-scalable fence around the Capitol Hill complex — to keep everyone safe. Both President-elect Joe Biden and VP-elect Kamala Harris said they will continue with a traditional outdoor ceremony at the Capitol building despite security concerns throughout the country. Since the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has urged Americans to stay home and out of DC during the inauguration. Here are photos that show what DC looks like a day before Biden and Harris are sworn into office.

U.S. defense officials say they are worried about an inside attack or other threat from service members involved in securing President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, the Associated Press reported. As a result, the FBI is now vetting all service members on hand in the capital to support the inauguration, an Army official told NBC News on Sunday. “The Army is working with the FBI to vet all service members supporting the Inauguration National Special Security Event,” the official said. Pentagon officials have told NBC News that they have seen no evidence of any threats. The FBI’s vetting of all service members is a change from last week when the Army said it was working with the Secret Service to determine which troops would require additional background screening.
