Then everything started to shake as the center of Morocco was hit with its strongest earthquake in more than a century. "He started shouting for help," photographer Ximena Borrazás said. Borrazás has spent the past couple of days photographing some of the villages most affected by Friday night's earthquake. These mountain villages are difficult to access, with narrow and winding roads, and some of those roads were still blocked Monday because of massive boulders that had rolled down the steep hills.

In Moulay Brahim, a village near the epicenter some 40 km (25 miles) south of Marrakech, residents described how they had dug the dead from the rubble using their bare hands. "We lost our houses and we lost people also and we are sleeping like two days outside," said 36-year-old Yassin Noumghar, another Moulay Brahim resident. Spain received a formal request from Morocco for assistance and it would be sending search and rescue teams, the Spanish foreign minister said.

As the death toll from the powerful earthquake in Morocco rose on Saturday, questions mounted about the vulnerability of buildings in the seismically active North African country. Moroccan architects said that the hardest-hit areas were rural zones with many earthen houses that were unable to withstand the shaking. “Given the state of the buildings in the country, this death toll was kind of expected,” said Anass Amazirh, an architect in the northern city of Casablanca.
