CNN —Almost three decades ago, Richard Hays, a United Methodist minister and the soon-to-be dean of Duke Divinity School, wrote what quickly became the go-to traditionalist Christian argument against same-sex marriage. There’s been an odd numbness in the political ecosystem regarding the apparent second attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump. The problem with political discourse in America right now is that we are all stuck in a social media funhouse mirror booth. I promise you that the way Americans speak about one another online isn’t the way most Americans behave in person with one another. As social media rose and became the main distributor and facilitator of political information, our politics have become more combative and less collaborative. WASHINGTON — Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado told Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Ben Cardin on Wednesday that support from the United States is a “moral reference” for those protesting the government of President Nicolás Maduro, according to a summary of the call obtained first by NBC News. A bipartisan group of senators, including Cardin, issued a joint statement supporting the opposition before the call took place Wednesday. The call with Cardin was the first time Machado has spoken with a U.S. official since González’ exile. Despite that, and the exile of González, Machado insisted that her opposition campaign is still strong and reiterated that Venezuelans are united. “If all Venezuelans that are abroad or young people that were not allowed to register had voted, the result would have been 90 to 10,” against Maduro, Machado said on the call.

Lawyers for Caroline Ellison, the star witness in the prosecution of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, are recommending no prison time for their client’s role in the implosion of the crypto empire that was run by her former boss and ex-boyfriend. Judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over Bankman-Fried’s case, cited Ellison’s testimony when he decided in March to sentence the FTX founder to 25 years behind bars. Ellison, who ran Alameda Research, agreed to a plea deal in December 2022, a month after FTX spiraled into bankruptcy. Bankman-Fried forced Ellison into a sort-of isolation, culminating in her moral compass being “warped,” the lawyers say. Her former roommates and ex-FTX executives, Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, will be sentenced in October and November, respectively.
