NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — The money from corporate support keeps poring into the LPGA Tour, which on Thursday announced a 2024 schedule with over $116 million in prize money and a record 10 regular tournaments offering at least $3 million. Political Cartoons View All 1250 ImagesThe agreement includes this week's CME Group Tour Championship. Prize money on the LPGA Tour has been steadily climbing, with recent boosts coming from the majors, particularly the U.S. Women's Open ($11 million this year) and the KPMG Women's PGA Championship ($10 million). This year, only four regular tournaments — not including the five majors or the CME Group Tour Championship — had prize funds of $3 million or more. The Women's PGA goes to Sahalee outside Seattle, while the U.S. Women's Open is at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania.

The big increase — double what the winner gets this year — comes from a two-year extension with Chicago-based CME Group, which sponsors the season-long Race to CME Globe. Along with the winner receiving $4 million, the runner-up gets $1 million and all 60 players to reach the season finale are guaranteed at least $55,000. "As a long-standing supporter of women in business and sports, CME Group is pleased to continue our partnership with the LPGA to further elevate women’s golf,” said Terry Duffy, chairman and CEO of CME Group. “CME Group has been pushing the LPGA forward at every step of our evolution since 2011 and with this extension they are once again helping take the LPGA, women’s golf and women’s sports to unprecedented heights," LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan said. She did not qualify for this year's CME Group Tour Championship, which is for the leading 60 players from a points race.

Feb 13 (Reuters) - Former world number one Stacy Lewis has been named U.S. captain for the 2024 Solheim Cup in Gainesville, Virginia, the LPGA said on Monday. Lewis is already serving as captain for the 2023 U.S. team that will face Europe at the Sept. 22-24 Solheim Cup at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain. "This is such an amazing honour, to be asked to again captain the U.S. Solheim Cup Team," said Lewis. Lewis will be 38-years-old when the 2022 competition begins, making her the youngest American captain in Solheim Cup history. Europe are the champions after edging the United States 15-13 at Inverness Club in Ohio in 2021 to retain the Solheim Cup.
Dec 25 (Reuters) - Kathy Whitworth, whose 88 LPGA Tour victories are the most ever by a player on a pro tour, passed away suddenly on Saturday while celebrating Christmas Eve with family and friends, her longtime partner Bettye Odle said. "It is with a heart full of love that we let everyone know of the passing of the winningest golf professional ever, Kathy Whitworth," Odle said in a statement on Sunday. Her mother and father supported her amid a sluggish start to her pro career and she won the first of her 88 LPGA Tour titles at the Kelly Girls Open in 1962. She went on to claim six major championships, was named LPGA Tour's Player of the Year seven times and became the first LPGA player to pass $1 million in career earnings. Her career included a rivalry with fellow late World Golf Hall of Famer Mickey Wright, who is second behind Whitworth in LPGA Tour wins with 82.
