Though my husband didn't want kids, he also never pushed me either way, which I'm grateful for. It mostly consists of other childless couples (or couples with grown-up children), surfers, business owners and freelancers, and expats from countries like Germany, Poland, France, Venezuela, and Spain. Related storiesI started questioning things after a couple we know had a babyRecently, though, our perfectly crafted child-free lifestyle has been turned upside down. Will we regret our decision to live on our own terms without the chaos and beauty of raising a child? I'm picturing my husband and me — all shriveled up and gray — sitting at an empty dinner table, just the two of us.

CNN —Hawaii’s most controversial nature spot has once again become a center of concern, with 14 people recently arrested for accessing the Haiku Stairs on the island of Oahu according to officials. Eight of the 14 were arrested on September 3, although it’s not clear if they were hiking together. The Haiku Stairs, sometimes called the “stairway to heaven,” were closed to the public in 1987. In 2021, the Honolulu City Council voted to remove the Haiku Stairs. A local group called Friends of the Haiku Stairs is pushing back against the stairs’ removal, arguing that the $2.5 million process is too expensive.

Five people have developed Legionnaires' disease following possible exposure to contaminated water droplets from a cooling tower in downtown Lincoln, New Hampshire, state health officials say. Testing by the DHHS and the state Department of Environmental Services confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria contaminating the cooling tower. Four of the five people diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease were initially hospitalized and later discharged. “RiverWalk is partnering with DHHS to address the contamination, with additional test results for the cooling tower expected next week,” the release said. However, it can cause a more serious pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease, “which can be fatal if left untreated,” the release said.

(Photo by Alberto PIZZOLI / AFP) (Photo by ALBERTO PIZZOLI/AFP via Getty Images)Dolce and Gabbana's luxury perfume for dogs — costing over $100 — has sparked concerns from some animal welfare organizations. The Italian fashion house's alcohol-free fragrance mist for dogs, which costs £83 ($105) on its U.K. website, is inspired by Fefé, the pet dog of brand-owner Domenico Dolce. However, the fragrance has drawn some concern from animal welfare organizations and experts who warn that perfumes can interfere with a dog's sense of smell. Oils such as ylang ylang which is included in Fefé, can also have a positive effect, he said. RSPCA's Potter also noted that some "lightly-scented products," which do not use aversive scents or interfere with a dog's sense of smell, can have a calming effect.

What if All Dance Forms Were Considered Equal?

Under the gentle radiance of golden chandeliers stood dancers, rows and rows of them, gleaming onstage. The scene was like a painting steeped in mist, its width diffused by shards of light and fog, its depth seeming to reach into infinity. Within each body, you felt dance history. For this version of his dance “Apaches,” the choreographer Saïdo Lehlouh opened the Foyer de la Danse behind the stage at the Palais Garnier, the opera house that is a hallowed home for classical ballet. The foyer, a gilded salon where dancers warm up, is not a space the public usually sees.

The Olympic Flame Isn’t a Flame at All

The Olympic flame isn’t a flame. Every Olympic host city has a few basic tasks that force it to straddle the line between acknowledging the tradition of the Games while showing that it is keeping up with the times. And that’s how you get an Olympic flame that’s not a flame at all. A flame that is actually “a cloud of mist and beams of light,” according to Paris 2024 organizers. That flame (or is it “flame”?)

An unspoken question lingers on people's faces when they hear our family of five took a gap year to travel around South America. We budgeted about $12,000 for flights, estimating six one-way flights at about $2,000 each for our family of five. All told, we expected the trip to cost about $60,000, or less than a year of life at home in Chicagoland. We funded our trip by renting out our home in the Chicago suburbs, which covered our home upkeep and nearly 40% of our travel expenses. On the trip, we didn't know where we'd be in two months or how much money we'd bring in.

Sean Waugh holds a laptop with green, red and yellow weather radar looping as his driver rumbles down an Oklahoma highway in their government-issued truck. A rectangular cage with metal mesh covers the truck in an attempt to protect the team from hail. Hanging off the front of the hail cage are weather instruments that look like the horn of a rhinoceros charging into a storm. The truck, called Probe One, points in one direction, and a companion, Probe Two, points in another. “Probe One, you want us to go?”“Yes, go now,” says Dr. Waugh, a researcher with the National Severe Storms Laboratory.

The fans flooded through the streets of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, by the thousands, kept cool by mist machines in the 110-degree heat. It was the inaugural Esports World Cup, a coming-out party for Saudi Arabia’s growing video game industry. Now, new research has revealed that there are two distinct species of giant hummingbird in South America — the northern giant hummingbird that lives year-round in the Andes, and the migratory southern giant hummingbird — and they have been evolving separately for millions of years. When university administrators across the nation worry about the potential fallout from campus protests, they may have Siemens Hall in mind. The building at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, includes the campus president’s office and has been occupied for a week by pro-Palestinian protesters who barricaded themselves inside and fought off an early attempt by the police to remove them. Protesters have since tagged walls and renamed it “Intifada Hall” by ripping off most of the signage on the brick exterior. The school, situated more than 275 miles north of San Francisco among the ancient coastal redwoods that drip with fog mist, is the site of the nation’s most entrenched campus protest. It has gone well beyond the encampments on student quads elsewhere; at Cal Poly Humboldt, protesters took over the power center of the campus and have rejected increasingly desperate entreaties from officials for them to vacate the premises.

A few seconds later, a device resembling a snow maker began to rumble, then produced a great and deafening hiss. A fine mist of tiny aerosol particles shot from its mouth, traveling hundreds of feet through the air. The scientists wanted to see whether the machine that took years to create could consistently spray the right size salt aerosols through the open air, outside of a lab. If it works, the next stage would be to aim at the heavens and try to change the composition of clouds above the Earth’s oceans. That has pushed the idea of deliberately intervening in climate systems closer to reality.
