Khan Younis, Gaza CNN —Palestinians who fled the southern Gazan city of Khan Younis just over a week ago started to return to their homes Tuesday to find extensive destruction, with many homes and multistory buildings reduced to ruins, after the Israeli military withdrew its forces. The Israeli military withdrew from eastern Khan Younis more than a week after an incursion and heavy bombardment that killed dozens of Palestinians and forced thousands of others to flee. But when Israeli forces began an assault on Khan Younis in early December, those living there were forced to seek refuge further south. Teams working for Gaza’s civil defense directorate recovered 42 bodies in the Bani Suheila area after the Israeli military withdrawal, the organization said on Tuesday. ET) on Tuesday, it had recorded the deaths of 290 Palestinians in eastern Khan Younis and the wounding of more than 700 others since July 22.

In an election upset in Iran, the reformist candidate, Masoud Pezeshkian, who advocated for moderate policies at home and improved relations with the West, won the presidential runoff election, beating his hard-line rival, the Ministry of Interior said on Saturday morning. Mr. Pezeshkian, 69, a cardiac surgeon, got 16.3 million votes to defeat the hard-line candidate, Saeed Jalili, delivering a blow to the conservative faction and a major victory for the reformist faction that had been sidelined from politics for the past few years. Mr. Jalili received 13.5 million votes. After polls closed at midnight, turnout stood at 50 percent, about 10 percentage points higher than in the first round of the election with about 30.5 million ballots cast in total, according to Iran’s interior ministry. The first round saw a record-low turnout because many Iranians had boycotted the vote as an act of protest.

CNN —Israel’s military said it was resuming combat operations in Gaza on Friday morning after the temporary truce with Hamas that had paved the way for hostage releases broke down. The hard-negotiated temporary truce, which began last Friday, was extended by two days following the release of some captives held by Hamas. The truce brought temporary respite to the besieged enclave of Gaza, which had been relentlessly pounded by Israel’s military since the Hamas attack. As the truce expiration loomed, both Israel and Hamas indicated they were prepared for fighting to resume. Under the terms of the truce deal, Israel has to free three Palestinians for every Israeli hostage released.

The IDF also said “numerous other Hamas terrorists” were hit in the strike, and claimed the Central Jabalya Battalion had taken control of civilian buildings. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the strike as a “massacre,” referencing “chilling documented scenes” of children and women. Jordan’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the strike, saying it held Israel responsible for “this dangerous development,” in a statement released on X, previously known as Twitter. The population of southern Gaza has swelled in recent days after the Israeli military told around one million residents to leave northern Gaza ahead of the expected Israeli ground incursion. Early Friday morning, CNN’s Nic Robertson witnessed increased military activity along Israel’s border with Gaza. Protests in the Middle EastIsraeli warplanes’ relentless bombardment has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless and sparked growing protests across the Middle East. Anti-Israel protests gained momentum this week after hundreds of Palestinians were killed Tuesday in a blast at the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza. With anti-Israel protests rising across the Middle East there are fears other fronts could open up, particularly on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon where Hezbollah dominates and has increasingly clashed with Israel’s military over the last week.

A surveillance video shared by the interior ministry on Thursday shows the suspects attempting to bring the captagon tablets through Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port. UAE authorities have seized hundreds of thousands of captagon pills since 2019. Captagon was originally the brand name for a medicinal product containing the synthetic stimulant fenethylline. Experts say the vast majority of global captagon production occurs in Syria, with the Gulf region being its primary destination. Last year, the US introduced the 2022 US Captagon Act, which linked the trade to the Syrian regime and called it a “transnational security threat.”
