Because — I don’t know if you saw this last year — The New Yorker fact-checked my standup comedy,” Minhaj said in his special, “Off With His Head,” which premiered Tuesday on Netflix. In “The King’s Jester,” Minhaj tells a story about how he was mailed an envelope of white powder which he accidentally spilled on his infant daughter. Minhaj revealed to The New Yorker that his daughter never came in contact with the powder and was never hospitalized. An envelope with white powder was mailed to his house, however, which eventually inspired the joke. But after The New Yorker interview published a month later, it was reported that Comedy Central had opened up the search beyond Minhaj.

‘Summer Camp’ (May 31)Kathy Bates, Diane Keaton and Alfre Woodard in "Summer Camp." The movie, costarring Vanessa Hudgens, follows 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” (it seems that title’s promise didn’t quite stick). The film looks dutifully creepy, and stars the talented Dakota Fanning (“Ripley”) as an artist who finds herself in a strange forest in Ireland. ‘Cuckoo’ (August 2)Hunter Schafer in “Cuckoo.” NEONStarring “Euphoria’s” Hunter Schafer in her first lead film role, this horror film looks positively creepy and a bit, well, cuckoo. ‘Blink Twice’ (August 23)A scene from “Blink Twice.” MGMJam packed with a starry cast, “Blink Twice” looks like a perfect late summer movie – attractive people, elaborate action sequences, and mindless mayhem.

‘Babes’ Review: Adulting, With Babies
  + stars: | 2024-05-16 | by ( Alissa Wilkinson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Alas: That’s what happened with “Babes.” The elements that promised joy were all there, starting with two very funny comic talents in Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau. There’s a screenplay by Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz, who was a producer on “Broad City,” the kooky, beloved show in which Glazer co-starred. But sometimes a pile of good ingredients doesn’t make something delicious, and I guess that’s what happened here. The marketing for “Babes” suggests something akin to “Bridesmaids,” the runaway 2011 hit that reminded Hollywood that raunchy comedies starring women can be hilarious and profitable. Dawn and Marty’s second baby is born on Thanksgiving Day, and on the way home from the hospital Eden meets Claude (Stephan James) on the subway.

Hasan Minhaj was a frontrunner for the "Daily Show" hosting gig after Trevor Noah left. In the wake of a New Yorker story that fact-checked his stand-up, Minhaj didn't get the job. He joked that his not getting the gig paved the way for Jon Stewart to bring back the show's ratings. Minhaj joked that losing the gig paved the way for the late-night show's resurgence, according to Variety. Onstage at the comedy festival Thursday, Minhaj bantered with "The Daily Show" correspondent Ronny Chieng about losing the job.

Apple just removed WhatsApp, Signal, and other messaging apps from its Chinese app store. But it could happen in the US, too, if a TikTok ban bill becomes law. It's from an unidentified Apple comms person, to The Wall Street Journal, explaining why Apple just took four messaging/social media apps — WhatsApp, Threads, Signal, and Telegram — out of its Chinese app store. If the TikTok bill does become law, it won't make TikTok go away overnight in the US. But if the law jumps enough hurdles to become enforceable, Apple would have to remove TikTok from its US app store, as would Google.

Getting Dressed for the ‘Muslim Met Gala’
  + stars: | 2024-04-10 | by ( Sadiba Hasan | Amir Hamja | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Washington Square Park is known for its lively atmosphere and eclectic characters. People celebrate Eid by getting dressed to the nines, which is why some jokingly refer to it as the Muslim Met Gala. Many came to Washington Square Park wearing colorful traditional garments like galabeyas, grand boubous, salwar kameez, thobes, kurtas and abayas, some of which were accessorized with opulent jewels or swipes of dark kajal eyeliner. Others chose more casual clothes — like the comic Ramy Youssef, who wore a hoodie and a green baseball cap. On the morning of Eid, there are many large prayer gatherings throughout New York — in mosques, at high school football fields, on blocked-off streets.

The comedian Hasan Minhaj released a 21-minute video on Thursday, addressing a New Yorker article that chronicled fabrications of personal experiences he recounted in his stand-up specials, and apologizing to those who felt “betrayed.”Minhaj, whose politically-minded Netflix show “Patriot Act” ran from 2018 to 2020, posted the video — which he called a “deep dive on my own scandal” — nearly six weeks after the magazine published its article. In it the reporter, Clare Malone, parsed the details of his biographical comedy around growing up as a Muslim American and an Asian American. “I took a beat before responding because, like you, I have been paralyzed by the news coming out of the Middle East, and I have been processing all the criticism that has come my way,” Minhaj said in the video. “And I just want to say to anyone who felt betrayed or hurt by my stand-up, I am sorry. I made artistic choices to express myself and drive home larger issues affecting me and my community, and I feel horrible that I let people down.”But Minhaj said he felt as if he came off as a “psycho” in the article, and he defended fictionalizing parts of his stand-up anecdotes as a way to emphasize truths about racism and threats that he had experienced.

Many are saying they are worried Minhaj's fabrications could invalidate people's accounts of actual racism and Islamophobia. People can stereotype and say, 'Oh, look, that South Asian comedian lied. Vishal Kalyanasundaram, a South Asian comedian, said he can understand the backlash but believes it shouldn't be such a big deal. "Just because he's South Asian doesn't mean he's the golden child and the voice for our people. Nylah Burton, a freelance journalist, also defended Minhaj, recognizing that the comedy industry is difficult to break into, especially for a South Asian Muslim comedian.

All artists teach their audience how to view them, by the way they tell jokes, their style, the level of absurdity. What makes Hasan Minhaj such a troubling example is that his style, onstage and often off in interviews, suggested we should believe him. Lying in comedy isn’t necessarily wrong. The problem with only considering the standard of emotional truth is that it can blind you to the impact on the actual world outside your emotions. You could say that the emotional truth behind the Patriot Act was that the terrorism of Sept. 11 required extreme tactics to feel safe, but that doesn’t make the legislation right.

Barack Obama is no stranger to bleak circumstances — maintaining a positive attitude despite them helps him stay in high spirits. Obama, 61, discussed the top tactic he uses to remain level-headed in an interview with comedian Hasan Minhaj published on Wednesday. I'm pretty sure that between World War I, World War II, the Great Depression … we can go through the list of moments that are significantly worse than this." "Reframing your overly negative thoughts into more realistic statements can help you maintain a healthy dose of optimism."

Noah noted the strong influence American political parties hold, encouraging his audience to consider issues outside the lens of democrat or republican ideals. From my mom, my gran, my aunt – all these Black women in my life,” the host said. “If you truly want to learn about America, talk to Black women,” he continued. Noah took over the program in 2015 from long-time host Jon Stewart whose 16-year run of the show shaped it into a late-night staple. He kicks off his “Trevor Noah: Off The Record” tour in Atlanta on January 20.
