Meanwhile, a faction of hard-right GOP members moved to cut Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's salary. AdvertisementAdvertisementAs Congress scrambles to drum up a plan to avert a government shutdown, hard-right lawmakers curiously proposed a move to cut the salary of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to $1. Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene proposed an amendment to slash Austin's salary on the House floor on Wednesday, putting the proposal to a voice vote. AdvertisementAdvertisementAustin, a retired four-star Army general, is the first Black secretary of defense and was confirmed 93-2 by a Senate committee in 2021. On September 21, several hard-right Republicans continued to stifle progress on a spending agenda after rejecting a defense bill that typically receives bipartisan support.

Texas National Guardsmen set up a secret spying mission by using WhatsApp to snoop on migrants, a watchdog found. Top brass in Operation Lone Star — a state-run effort to combat illegal immigration — "wanted to pretend it was like Iraq," one servicemember told The Texas Tribune and The Military Times. Insider has reached out to the Texas National Guard for comment. After whistleblowers reported the WhatsApp surveillance, leaders in the Texas National Guard shut down Operation Lone Star's intelligence unit, the report said. The Texas Military Department's inspector general also investigated the activity and determined it was an unauthorized foreign intelligence operation, the outlets reported.

The West has been sending Ukraine weapons and armed vehicles since the start of the war. Now, as Ukraine is in the midst of its counteroffensive to regain crucial territory from Russia, many of these weapons are proving useful. Insider spoke to three military experts about which of the Western-provided weapons have been the most effective for Ukraine in the war. Only time will tell how useful the weapons really areIt is still unclear how Ukraine's counteroffensive will unfold, and how long the Western weapons will hold until Ukraine will need more. A top Ukrainian general told the BBC on Thursday that because Russia has littered the frontlines in south Ukraine with multi-layered minefields, Western tanks are proving ineffective.

Decades after Oppenheimer, the US still pays benefits to people exposed to nuclear radiation. Civilians who contracted cancer or other diseases due to nuclear testing also receive benefits. Long after the creation and testing of that first nuclear weapon and the many more tests that followed, Washington is still paying benefits to veterans and civilians exposed to radiation from nuclear bomb tests and cleanups. It was over 40 years after the first nuclear test, codenamed "Trinity," before the risks and dangers were officially recognized. Jeff T. Opinion | Who Should We Honor on Memorial Day?
  + stars: | 2023-05-28 | by ( Kayla M. Williams | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
While I worked in signals intelligence in Iraq, my friend Alyssa Peterson worked in human intelligence. In 2020, more than 6,100 veterans died by suicide. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, better known as the Wall, is inscribed with over 58,000 names of Americans who died in or supporting combat, or within 120 days of injuries or illnesses incurred in the combat zone. Their names will not be inscribed on the Wall, though the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is seeking to memorialize them in other ways. I will forever mourn and honor her, too, among our war dead this and every Memorial Day, whether or not her name is ever inscribed on a list of those killed in the global war on terrorism.
The viral story about New York veterans getting kicked out of a New York hotel was a hoax, the Mid Hudson News reported. Seven homeless men say they were part of a group of 15 who were supposed to act as vets to keep up the scheme. On May 12, the New York Post first reported that 20 homeless veterans were forced out of the Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh to make room for migrants the federal government was sending to New York. A graphics expert who works at the Mid Hudson News noticed the receipt appeared to have been doctored. The job came with a promise of $200 in addition to food and alcohol, Mid Hudson News reported.
Ukrainian snipers recently spoke with Military Times about their evolving role in the Ukraine war. The soldier added that he prefers to use a Kalashnikov rifle over his expensive, long-range sniper weapon. "Sniper duels are just a silly thing from the movies," Artyom told Military Times, adding that when Russian troops "really want to get us, they use mortars — or if we're really unlucky, white phosphorus." One of Artyom's students, who goes by Yevhen, said in an interview with Military Times that there is "not much need for snipers" around Bakhmut. "The enemy attempts to take full control of the city of Bakhmut, continuing the assault," it said in a Facebook update.
Air Force Times reported Andrew Cox kept his job, despite unprofessional behavior and misconduct. Cox reportedly wore a chartreuse mankini over his clothes in the office and kept sex toys at work. "It was chartreuse green, and he brought it out into the main area," Air Force Times reported one person familiar with the matter said of Cox's revealing bathing suit, popularized by the 2006 film "Borat." "Mr. Cox remains the director of the Space Warfighting Analysis Center," Air Force Times reported Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek said Friday. Representatives for the Air Force and Space Force did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.
Over a period of more than a decade, the US military conducted dozens of nuclear tests in the Pacific. Years later, soldiers were sent to the Marshall Islands to try and clean up the fallout from the testing. Nuclear tests like Castle Bravo produced a substantial amount of nuclear fallout that negatively affected the people of the Marshall Islands, according to the Brookings Institution think tank. Impact of radiation contaminationNuclear weapons testing in the Marshall Islands had "devastating effects" on the country's environment that "remain unresolved," according to a 2019 report by the Republic of the Marshall Islands' National Nuclear Commission. However, he, like thousands of others, are excluded from the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, which only covers veterans present for atmospheric nuclear tests.

NATO countries have scrambled to rearm and resupply Ukraine as it fights off Russia's invasion. Troops from six NATO countries during a joint terminal attack controller training in Latvia on April 6. Germany has agreed to send some older hardware to countries that send their Soviet-made tanks and armored vehicles to Ukraine. Interoperability with weapons and alignment on tactics will also make it "veritably impossible for these countries to leave NATO," Banerjee added. "The weapons are from NATO, they're going to be from NATO, they will be back-built, and these components will be from NATO countries."
US troops at the al-Tanf outpost in Syria have been conducting counter-ISIS operations since 2016. Israeli, Syrian, and Iranian forces are also active around the base in southeastern Syria.
