A France in Shock Confronts the Violence in Its Midst
  + stars: | 2024-05-15 | by ( Roger Cohen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
If France is a country of illusions — a beautiful and seductive land offering many of life’s greatest pleasures that sits atop and conceals a crime-ridden, drug-plagued world of violence — then the past week offered a rude awakening to this dual reality. The Olympic flame arrived on French soil last week in the ancient port city of Marseille as a joyous crowd thronged the beautiful harbor. The chatter was of peace ahead of the Games, which begin in July. But the flame also arrived in a city whose northern districts are the epicenter of the French drug trade, where 49 people were killed last year and 123 injured in drug-related shootings. This, just 85 miles from the capital, was a methodical execution in broad daylight on the main road from Paris to Normandy.

The untimely death of a 35-year-old Bank of America associate has sparked a conversation across Wall Street over working conditions. "And to at least just start having those conversations as to how they can make junior bankers work life much better because it's been long overdue. At BofA, 100-plus hour weeks logged by junior bankers aren't unusual, said current and former employees, who questioned whether the firm's system for flagging excessive amounts of work was actually effective. But some junior bankers felt dismayed by an apparent lack of written communication from bank leaders about the incident, this person added. Crushing exhaustion, heightened demandsThe former BofA investment-banking analyst, who was not on Lukenas' team, quit in 2023 after two years.

The portfolio manager whisperers
  + stars: | 2024-05-03 | by ( Alex Morrell | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +24 min
AdvertisementHistorically, a hedge fund's chief investment office or senior portfolio manager was responsible for vetting and wooing key investment hires. They can also help hedge funds save on outside recruiting costs, which can add up to tens of millions a year. Hedge funds targeted institutional salespeople at investment banks with exposure to hedge funds, as well as asset allocators with chops in portfolio-manager selection and due diligence. Assets at multimanager hedge funds have boomed since 2018. The principle may work for fictional baseball diamonds, but the reality at hedge funds is more complicated.

"There's a real war for talent within family offices," said William Sinclair, U.S. head of J.P. Morgan Private Bank's Family Office Practice. According to the report, which surveyed 190 family offices with average assets of $1.4 billion, family offices that manage less than $500 million spend an average of $1.5 million a year for operating costs. Family offices between $500 million and $1 billion spend an average of $2.7 million, and those above $1 billion average $6.1 million. The biggest cost is staffing, which has become more expensive as family offices have tripled in number over the past five years. "If you look back 15 years ago, family offices were where people went to retire and have work-life balance," he said.

Middle managers' confidence in companies' outlooks is decreasing due to layoffs and burnout. And between layoffs, fights over remote work, and increased workload, many middle managers are simply burned out. Middle managers have been feeling the heat since early last year when Meta embarked on its mandate of efficiency. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he didn't want to see so many "managers managing managers, managing managers, managing managers, managing the people who are doing the work" during an internal Q&A session in January 2023. Some top executives, however, say that cutting middle managers could threaten productivity.

Hinds County Chancery Judge Crystal Wise Martin blocked the law in October 2022 after Parents for Public Schools sued the state. Tate Reeves created a grant program to help private schools pay for water, broadband and other infrastructure projects. State attorneys also wrote that the Mississippi Constitution only blocks the Legislature from sending money directly to private schools.

New York CNN —A third person has been arrested and was charged in federal court Monday in connection with the death of a 1-year-old boy who was exposed to the highly potent drug fentanyl while inside a Bronx day care, according to federal prosecutors. One-year-old Nicholas Dominici died after the suspected fentanyl exposure earlier this month at Divino Niño day care center. Paredes, who was arrested Saturday in an apartment in the Bronx, allegedly conspired to distribute fentanyl, including at the day care center, from at least July of 2023, authorities said. Paredes and his alleged co-conspirators, Grei Mendez and Carlisto Acevedo Brito, stored the drugs at the day care – including a kilo of fentanyl on children’s playmats, according to a criminal complaint. Investigators were able to trace phone calls and text messages from Mendez and Brito that led them to Paredes, according to the complaint.

CNN —Authorities discovered a trap floor containing drugs, including fentanyl, inside a Bronx day care center where a 1-year-old boy died of a suspected fentanyl overdose last week, the New York Police Department announced Thursday. The NYPD says a large quantity of fentanyl and other narcotics were discovered in a trap floor in the play area of the day care center. One-year-old Nicholas Dominici died after a suspected exposure to fentanyl last week at Divino Niño day care center. “More evidence has been recovered that leads to the conclusion that this was more than just a day care center,” Clark said Thursday. While charging and fueling trucks cost the same, other cars and their electric counterparts differ. It's not yet cheaper to charge some electric cars than to fuel them with gas, a new study suggests. It's not yet cheaper to charge many electric cars than it would be to fuel their gas-powered counterparts up with gas, a new study indicates. Trucks cost about the same to fuel and charge, while entry and midlevel cars and SUVs cost more to charge at home and in public than they do to fuel at a gas station, the group found. Luxury-segment EVs may cost less to charge at home than their gas counterparts would cost to fuel.

It may seem counterintuitive, but the pandemic was like a brief visit to Shangri-La for Wall Street. For the first time in years, Wall Street has to sing for its supper. A return to the office also means a return to more-classic Wall Street social norms. Wall Street, for all its highfalutin personalities and big paydays, is an apprenticeship system. For Wall Street, the heart of the pandemic was a moment to consider what life would be like at a slower, more-nurturing pace.

By the 1960s, the idea developed into that of the “space elevator,” a transport system consisting of a cable attached to the earth’s surface near the Equator, anchored by a counterweight out beyond geosynchronous orbit. Though popular with science fiction writers and the longer-haired kind of engineer, space elevators remain theoretical. In “Counterweight,” by the pseudonymous Korean science fiction writer Djuna, nanotubes are part of the intellectual property of the sprawling, multinational LK corporation. Another option would be for Mr. Putin to leave Wagner’s overseas operations as is, and install a new leader to replace Mr. Prigozhin. Zaporizhzhia has seen fierce fighting as Ukrainian forces continue their counteroffensive and push against Russian defenses, Al Jazeera added. A senior US defense official told Insider in March 2022 that Russian senior officials stay near the front as part of Moscow's military organization and structure. NBA, NBPA ratify new collective bargaining agreement
  + stars: | 2023-04-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
April 27 - The NBA Board of Governors and NBA players ratified the new Collective Bargaining Agreement on Wednesday, a seven-year deal that will start on July 1 and run through the 2029-30 season. It features a number of major changes, including an in-season tournament where players on the winning team would each earn $500,000. Despite the plethora of changes, the CBA still requires players to be at least 19 years old to enter the league. But the sides never reached an agreement on that, keeping the "one-and-done" rule in place. Had the sides not reached an agreement on the CBA earlier this month, either party could have decided to opt out of the current agreement, which would have caused the first major NBA work stoppage since the 2011-12 season.

A splendid idea from an internal subordinate can activate a threat response from that employee’s leader, research shows. Leigh Thompson is the J. Jay Gerber Professor of Dispute Resolution and Organizations and a director of executive-education programs at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Previously, as a midlevel manager in a services business, she had frequently presented to senior leaders what she thought were creative, innovative ideas. Ultimately, my student grew frustrated and left the company and started her own consulting firm. When her old employer became a client, she presented her favorite previously dismissed ideas to the same leaders—and this time they loved them!

Resistors are typically senior-level employees and high performers, workers who aren’t worried that defying return-to-office rules will yield professional consequences. Those are the employees who when pushed to return to the office will quit — either on the spot or in the months after R.T.O. It’s not about remote workers detaching from work, but instead about people resisting when pushed toward working conditions they don’t like. Workers of color, who can feel marginalized within corporate work structures, tend to bristle at return-to-office mandates, Tsipursky said. Justice Hector LaSalle would have been the first Latino to lead New York’s court system . Kathy Hochul ’s nominee to lead the state court system was again rejected by her fellow Democrats in the state Senate during a Wednesday floor vote, ending a weekslong procedural standoff. Justice Hector LaSalle’s nomination to be chief judge of the Court of Appeals was voted down by the Democratic-controlled chamber, 20 in favor to 39 opposed. Most Democrats voted against Justice LaSalle, who currently runs a midlevel appeals court based in Brooklyn, while most Republicans were in favor.

Hochul's choice, Hector LaSalle, is the presiding justice of a midlevel state appeals court in Brooklyn, and would have been the first Hispanic chief judge of the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals. Many had hoped Hochul would replace former Chief Judge Janet DiFiore with a more liberal judge. "But it was not a vote on the merits of Justice LaSalle, who is an overwhelmingly qualified and talented jurist.
