How can someone that talented go more than four years without winning on the LPGA Tour? It's not about how many men Thompson beat over 36 holes. Golf is one of the few sports that allows for men and women playing together, and the PGA Tour is just now getting up to speed. Men and women compete for one prize (the women play from a shorter set of tees). There was chatter several years ago about combining the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua for winners from the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Lexi Thompson kept a rough round from getting worse and wound up holding her own Thursday in the Shriners Children's Open until darkness kept her from finishing. Rose Zhang has arrived with a level of hype and awe that had been reserved for Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods. They surfaced at a luncheon with Brandi Chastain and Kristi Yamaguchi, and during a climb up a flight of stairs, and a stroll through a lobby. That’s Michelle Wie West, that 6-foot-1 fixture of collective memory and modern golf history. She did not win as much as she wanted to, and certainly not as much as many people thought she would or should have. But after close to a quarter of a century in the spotlight, she is still one of the savviest stars women’s golf has ever had, a player plenty of people outside of golf know as a star even if they do not know golf. The competitive golf part of Wie’s life will most likely be done by dusk on Sunday, when the U.S. Women’s Open is scheduled to finish at Pebble Beach.

Not long before Rose Zhang clutched a microphone on Tuesday, Michelle Wie West laughingly made an observation: Zhang might have logged more weeks as the world’s No. 1 amateur women’s golfer than Wie West spent as an amateur, period. It was an exaggeration — even though Wie West became a professional at 15 years old and Zhang spent more than 140 weeks in the top spot — but it also wryly underscored how Zhang’s rise in women’s golf is playing out differently from how other ascending stars built their careers. In Zhang, who will make her professional debut this week at the Mizuho Americas Open in Jersey City, N.J., women’s golf is getting the rare prodigy who has played for an American college. “So I wanted to see how I fared in college golf, and it turned out well.”

At nine years old, the Brazilian is the youngest player ever to attempt qualification to the tournament, set to tee off at California’s acclaimed Pebble Beach course for the first time in its 78-year history in July. Aged 14 in 2004, she bested many of the world's top men's players' and major winners at the Sony Open (pictured) despite narrowly missing the cut. The Brazilian shot 23-over par, as two players – Lindy Duncan and Brooke Matthews – secured automatic qualification with scores of 10-under and 8-under respectively. Kimberly Williams, a 60-year-old pro from Bethesda, Maryland, was the oldest player to attempt qualification this year, according to the USGA.
In doing so Thitikul becomes the second youngest golfer to reach the summit of the women’s game. Already a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour, Thitikul is also only the second player – after Park Sung-hyun – to have reached the world No.1 slot in their rookie season. Henderson has since racked up eight wins on the LPGA Tour, her most recent coming at the LA Open in April 2021. She won her first LPGA Tour event in March 2022 at the JTBC Classic in Southern California (pictured), and in May, rose to No. 1 ranking in 2015, and today boasts 17 victories on the LPGA Tour.
