Wilson ran a 44.20 to reset the U18 men’s 400m world record and broke his own U.S. high school record en route to winning the race at the American Track League event in Gainesville, Fla. He’ll head to Paris as one of six runners in the pool for America’s 4×400 relay team. The relay pool is designed to spread out the load over two rounds. The relay team will be officially announced later this month, and Wilson is firmly in the mix. He is the youngest male track athlete ever to make a U.S. Olympic team and already has an NIL deal with New Balance.

CNN —Athing Mu’s hopes of defending her 800-meter title at the Paris Olympics ended in heartbreaking fashion on Monday as she fell to the floor at the US track and field trials. The trio of Nia Atkins, who won in a time of 1:57.36, Allie Wilson, and Juliette Whittaker completed the podium to make the Olympic team. Mu’s fall underlined the sometimes brutal nature of the US Olympic trials, which dictate that only the top three finishers will make the team for an individual event, regardless of an athlete’s pedigree and past results. Despite her lack of races due to a lingering hamstring issue, Mu appeared in good shape at the trials, winning her semifinal in a time of 1:58.84. “I don’t know if my season’s over yet,” Wilson told reporters on Monday.

CNN —Canadian teenager Christopher Morales Williams ran a stunning 400-meter world indoor record at the SEC Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Saturday. In 2018, American Michael Norman ran an indoor time of 44.52 which couldn’t be ratified as a record by World Athletics. “The world record – I guess that’s something you wouldn’t really expect to happen, but it did,” Morales Williams told reporters after Saturday’s race. And then I guess that’s always the result of it.”Morales Williams won the Canadian national championships and a silver at the Pan American U20 championships last year. Prior to that, he was part of Canada’s silver medal team in the 4x400-meter relay at the World U20 Championships in 2022.

The Portuguese federation announced his withdrawal on Thursday, noting the nagging injury had sidelined him from several events this season including the domestic championships. The 30-year-old Pichardo is the latest reigning champion to pull out of the global showcase event that begins on Saturday. United States 400 metres hurdles Olympic champion and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone said last week that she would miss the worlds due to a "minor knee issue."

Norman produced a memorable performance to triumph in Eugene last year after a succession of career disappointments, including a shock fifth-place finish in the Tokyo Olympic final. "Unfortunately I will not be defending my title at the 2023 World champs," Norman said in an Instagram post. Norman had scarcely competed this year and withdrew from the LA Grand Prix in May after finishing eighth in the 200m at the Doha Diamond League meet. McLaughlin-Levrone, who broke her own world record to win the 400m hurdles last year, had been expected to compete in the flat event.
